Recommended Free Tools
The right PC depends on the specific space sandbox survival games you want to run and the settings you expect. There is no single “genre minimum.” Empyrion – Galactic Survival, Star Citizen/Squadron 42 and Starfield publish materially different CPU, GPU, memory, operating-system and storage requirements. Treat every minimum as a compatibility threshold, not a promise of a particular frame rate, resolution or stutter-free play.
Compare the same tier—minimum or recommended—across every game, then verify the current store or support page before buying hardware. The tables below use the published requirements available for these three representative titles and explain how to turn them into a sensible system check.

The specifications that matter most
For this genre, check five categories in order: processor model and instruction-set support, graphics card and video memory, system RAM, Windows/DirectX support, and storage type plus free capacity. A machine can pass one category and still fail another—for example, enough RAM but an unsupported CPU instruction set, or a fast graphics card installed on an operating system the game no longer lists.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- CPU: Look at cores, the named generation or model, and required features such as AVX, AVX2 and FMA3—not only the advertised clock speed.
- GPU: Match the stated card class and VRAM. GPU memory is separate from system RAM.
- RAM: Compare the game’s minimum and recommended system-memory figures. Do not assume a larger number compensates for an underpowered CPU or GPU.
- Operating system and API: Check the supported Windows release and DirectX version, including any version-specific minimum.
- Storage: Confirm both capacity and whether an SSD is mandatory or merely recommended.
The published lists do not provide a common FPS, resolution or frame-time benchmark. You therefore cannot convert a “recommended” label into a guaranteed 60 fps target without testing the exact game, scene and settings.

Why the CPU specification is more than a GHz number
Space sandboxes combine simulation, streaming, artificial intelligence, physics and rendering work. The listings reflect that complexity in different ways.
Core count and clock thresholds
Empyrion gives a simple floor—dual-core at 2.5 GHz—and a higher quad-core 3 GHz recommendation. Those figures are useful screening checks, but they do not tell you how a newer architecture compares with an older processor at the same frequency. Use the exact model and generation when comparing a desktop or laptop.
Named processor generations
Starfield names specific families rather than a generic clock speed: Ryzen 5 2600X or Core i7-6800K minimum, and Ryzen 5 3600X or Core i5-10600K recommended. A processor with a newer name is not automatically compliant unless its performance and supported platform meet the game’s listing; check the model against the publisher’s current page.

Instruction-set support
Roberts Space Industries requires a quad-core CPU with AVX, AVX2 and FMA3, and identifies Intel i7 Haswell-or-later or AMD Excavator-or-later as examples. These are CPU capabilities, not optional graphics settings. A processor can have adequate cores and still fail to launch or run correctly if the required instruction support is absent. Confirm support in the CPU specification or motherboard utility before installing the game.
GPU, VRAM and graphics API checks
GPU requirements span the widest range in the comparison. Empyrion’s Steam listing starts at an RX 550 or GTX 1050 with 2 GB VRAM and rises to a Vega 56 or GTX 1660 Ti with at least 4 GB. Starfield’s minimum is an RX 5700 or GTX 1070 Ti, while its recommended tier reaches an RX 6800 XT or RTX 2080. Those are substantially different classes of hardware; a card that clears Empyrion’s minimum is not consequently a Starfield-ready purchase.
For Star Citizen/Squadron 42, the listed requirement is a DirectX 11.1 graphics card with 4 GB of graphics memory. The API version matters as well as the card’s raw specifications. Windows can expose a compatible DirectX runtime while the physical GPU lacks the required feature level, so verify the card’s official API support.

“4 GB graphics memory” refers to memory on the graphics card. It cannot be satisfied by installing more ordinary system RAM, and integrated graphics may reserve system memory rather than providing dedicated VRAM. Check the GPU model, its dedicated-memory amount and the game’s listed API support together.

How much system RAM do you need?
The published figures are easy to confuse because Empyrion’s documents disagree. The current Steam listing says 10 GB minimum and 16 GB recommended; the developer FAQ says 8 GB minimum and 16 GB recommended. Star Citizen lists 16GB+, and Starfield lists 16 GB for both minimum and recommended.
For a multi-game library, use 16 GB as the lowest common published target among these examples, while recognizing that this is a comparison of listed requirements—not a guarantee that every future update will behave identically. Leave enough memory for Windows and background applications; closing unnecessary launchers can prevent avoidable paging, but it cannot fix a game that needs more physical RAM.
Storage: capacity and SSD status are separate requirements
All three listings provide a capacity figure, but their SSD language differs:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Empyrion lists 10 GB minimum or 15 GB recommended and highly recommends an SSD.
- Star Citizen/Squadron 42 requires a 150+ GB SSD and recommends at least 10 GB of additional SSD space for the pagefile.
- Starfield requires 125 GB and an SSD.
Only the published requirements establish the SSD requirement; they do not require NVMe specifically or prescribe a 2 TB drive. Before installation, check free space rather than the drive’s advertised total capacity, and allow room for updates and the operating system. For Star Citizen, the pagefile recommendation is additional space, not a replacement for the 150+ GB game requirement.

Operating-system and DirectX compatibility
Use the newest applicable listing when documents conflict. Empyrion’s current Steam page specifies Windows 10/11 64-bit and DirectX 11, while its older-looking FAQ still names Windows 7/8 64-bit. The discrepancy means the FAQ should not be used as proof that an unsupported legacy Windows installation is acceptable today.
Star Citizen/Squadron 42 lists Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11. Starfield requires Windows 10 version 21H1 at minimum and recommends an updated Windows 10/11 installation, with DirectX 12. A 64-bit edition is essential where stated; a 32-bit installation does not satisfy a 64-bit requirement even when the hardware is otherwise capable.
A practical way to check a PC before buying or installing
- List the exact games and target tier. Write “minimum” or “recommended” beside each title. Do not mix a minimum CPU with a recommended GPU and call the combination a tested build.
- Identify your installed hardware. In Windows, open Settings > System > About for the processor and installed RAM. Open Task Manager > Performance for CPU, GPU, memory and disk details; use the GPU’s manufacturer specification to confirm VRAM and DirectX support.
- Compare CPU model and features. Match named models or generations where provided, count physical/available cores, and verify AVX, AVX2 and FMA3 for Star Citizen/Squadron 42.
- Compare the discrete GPU. Match the model class, dedicated VRAM and API requirement. Integrated graphics should be treated cautiously unless the publisher explicitly lists an equivalent.
- Check RAM headroom. Confirm the installed total against each game’s minimum and recommended number, not just the amount available after Windows has started.
- Check Windows and DirectX. Press Win+R, enter
winverto see the Windows version, and rundxdiagto inspect the DirectX diagnostic information. Compare those results with the game’s listing. - Check the installation drive. In File Explorer, confirm the destination is an SSD and has at least the stated free capacity. For Star Citizen, include the extra pagefile space recommended by RSI.
- Recheck the live listing. Requirements can change with patches. For Empyrion in particular, prefer the current Steam requirements over the conflicting FAQ when making a present-day decision.
How to choose one PC for several games
Make a matrix with one row per game and columns for CPU, GPU/VRAM, RAM, Windows/API and storage. For each column, identify the most demanding published requirement. That highlights the constraint you must satisfy—for example, Starfield’s listed GPU tier or Star Citizen’s 150+ GB SSD.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do not add the requirements together or describe the resulting “highest” parts as a guaranteed build. A CPU requirement from one title and a GPU requirement from another have not been tested as a pair, and none of these lists states an FPS or resolution outcome. After compatibility, your chosen resolution, graphical preset, background workload and game updates still influence performance.

Common mistakes and their fixes
Relying on an old FAQ
Symptom: You see 8 GB RAM and Windows 7/8 for Empyrion in the FAQ and assume those are current. Fix: Use the current Steam listing’s 10 GB minimum, Windows 10/11 64-bit and DirectX 11 values, while noting the document conflict.
Comparing clock speeds across different CPUs
Symptom: A 3 GHz processor is assumed to be equivalent to every other 3 GHz processor. Fix: Compare the exact model, generation, core count and instruction support.
Confusing VRAM with RAM
Symptom: A system has 16 GB RAM but a card with less dedicated memory than required. Fix: Check the GPU’s dedicated VRAM separately.
Installing on a hard disk because capacity is sufficient
Symptom: The drive has enough gigabytes but the game lists an SSD requirement or recommendation. Fix: Select an SSD and verify free space after accounting for updates and any pagefile allowance.
Assuming minimum equals smooth play
Symptom: The game launches but stutters or requires low settings. Fix: Treat minimum as compatibility only; use the recommended tier as the more useful planning reference, without claiming a guaranteed frame rate.
What these requirements can—and cannot—tell you
They can tell you whether a listed CPU family, graphics card class, memory amount, Windows version, DirectX level and storage type are supported on paper. They cannot tell you the exact FPS, resolution, frame-time consistency, behavior in a crowded multiplayer area, or performance after a future patch. Those outcomes require game-specific testing under defined settings.
For a current purchase, start with the most demanding title you actually intend to play, meet its published CPU, GPU/VRAM, RAM, OS/API and SSD requirements, then verify that the same machine satisfies every other title in your list. Recheck the publishers’ live pages immediately before installation because requirements—and the documents that report them—can change.
