There is no single set of “modern gaming PC” specifications. The right parts depend on the games you play and the experience you want: resolution, graphics preset, frame-rate target, and whether the game’s stated result assumes features such as frame generation. Start with each game’s current official requirements, then compare your CPU, GPU, RAM and storage separately. A minimum or recommended label is not a universal performance guarantee.

The examples below show why. CD PROJEKT RED’s revised Cyberpunk 2077 minimum was designed around 1080p, the Low preset and an average 30 frames per second. The official Monster Hunter Wilds listing describes 1080p at 60 FPS on Medium with Frame Generation enabled. Those are different targets, with different conditions, and neither defines every other game.

Define the gaming experience before choosing hardware

Choose your games first

“Modern games” covers small competitive titles, large open-world releases, simulation-heavy games and graphically intensive ray-traced productions. Their requirements can differ substantially. Write down the games you actually intend to play and use the current publisher or store listing for each one. Requirements can change after patches, so check the listing again when you are ready to buy or upgrade.

Set a measurable target

For every game, record four conditions:

  • Resolution: 1080p, 1440p or 4K.
  • Preset: Low, Medium, High, Ultra or a custom mix.
  • Frame-rate goal: for example, a 30-FPS cinematic target or a higher-refresh competitive target.
  • Special features: ray tracing, upscaling or frame generation, if the published target assumes them.

A requirement that promises 1080p/60 with Frame Generation enabled is not equivalent to native 1080p/60. Treat the feature as part of the stated test condition, not as an optional detail.

How to read minimum and recommended requirements

Minimum means a defined floor, not a guarantee

Minimum specifications usually describe the lowest configuration the developer intends to support for a particular setting and target. In its June 11, 2023 update, CD PROJEKT RED said the revised Cyberpunk 2077 minimum configuration was intended to represent 1080p at an average 30 FPS on the Low preset. That is a useful interpretation of the label: it is tied to a resolution, preset and average frame rate, rather than promising that every scene will remain at 30 FPS.

Other games may define their minimum differently or leave the performance target unstated. Do not transfer one game’s minimum directly to another game.

Recommended is still game-specific

“Recommended” generally identifies a higher tier than minimum, but the word does not have a common industry benchmark. Check the resolution, settings and frame-rate information attached to the listing. If those conditions are missing, regard the recommendation as a component tier to investigate, not as a guaranteed result.

Check CPU and GPU independently

A graphics card that matches a listing does not prove that the rest of the computer qualifies. CD PROJEKT RED explicitly describes Cyberpunk 2077 as both graphics- and processor-intensive: “Please note that the game is both graphics- and processor-intensive, so make sure these components meet or exceed the minimum requirements.” Compare the processor tier and graphics-card tier separately, then verify memory and storage.

A component-by-component checking method

  1. Open the current official requirement page. Use the publisher’s page or the game’s current store listing, and note the date if one is shown.
  2. Copy every tier into a checklist. Record minimum and recommended CPU, GPU, RAM, storage type, free-space figure and any operating-system or feature notes.
  3. Write down your computer’s actual parts. In Windows, open Settings > System > About for the processor and installed memory, and use Settings > System > Storage to inspect drives and free space. The graphics-card model appears under Settings > System > Display > Advanced display or in Device Manager.
  4. Match the target conditions. A 1440p/60 High goal should be compared with a requirement written for that type of workload, not with a 1080p/30 Low minimum.
  5. Find the weakest match. If the CPU meets only minimum while the GPU meets recommended, the system is not a recommended-tier machine overall. The same applies in reverse.
  6. Verify the platform before buying. Check motherboard socket and firmware support, case clearance, power-supply capacity and connectors, cooling, and the drive interface.
  7. Leave practical capacity. The operating system, updates and background applications also use memory and storage. The cited game listings do not establish a universal headroom number, so judge this margin according to how you use the PC.

CPU: compare the processor tier, not just the graphics card

The CPU handles game logic, simulation, asset preparation and other work that can limit frame delivery even when the graphics card is capable of more. Large worlds, dense crowds and simulation-heavy scenes can therefore expose a processor limitation before the GPU reaches full load.

Use the exact CPU family and model named by the game, including any generation or architecture qualifier. A newer processor with fewer cores is not automatically equivalent to an older model listed by the developer, and a nominal clock-speed comparison is not enough to establish compliance. If a listing supplies only a broad family, verify the game’s current notes rather than assuming every chip in that family performs identically.

When diagnosing inconsistent frame rates, compare CPU utilisation by core as well as total utilisation. A single heavily loaded thread can restrict performance while overall CPU usage appears moderate. Closing background workloads may help, but it does not turn a processor below the stated tier into a qualifying part.

GPU: tie the graphics card to resolution and features

The GPU is the part most directly affected by resolution, image quality, ray tracing and visual effects. Compare the model or tier named by the game with the target you selected. Also check the memory figure in the requirement when one is provided; do not infer that an otherwise similar card is equivalent if it has less graphics memory.

Ray tracing can create a separate requirement tier. Cyberpunk 2077 publishes different settings and ray-tracing levels, so its ordinary rasterized requirement should not be used to claim that the same computer meets a ray-traced target. Read the tier that corresponds to the effects you intend to enable.

Upscaling and frame generation alter the conditions under which a frame-rate target is measured. Confirm that your GPU and the game support the specified feature, and remember which part of the result is rendered natively and which part is generated. A listing that assumes Frame Generation enabled should be compared on those terms rather than treated as a native-rendering guarantee.

RAM: use the game’s figure as a floor for that title

Memory requirements are title-specific. The revised Cyberpunk 2077 minimum lists 12 GB of RAM, while the Monster Hunter Wilds Steam listing gives 16 GB. These figures demonstrate why there is no universal “modern games” number. They are requirements for named games, not a promise that the same amount will cover every release, future patch or background application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare installed RAM with the game’s stated requirement and consider what else will be open: a browser, voice chat, recording software, launchers and an operating system all consume memory. If a game approaches the available amount, paging to storage can cause pauses. Adding memory can address that condition only when the motherboard supports the capacity and configuration; it cannot compensate for an underspecified CPU or GPU.

Storage: check both SSD status and free space

Storage requirements have two separate parts: the type of drive and the amount of available capacity. CD PROJEKT RED’s June 11, 2023 update lists a 70 GB SSD requirement for Cyberpunk 2077. The Monster Hunter Wilds listing says an SSD is required and specifies 75 GB of available space.

“Available space” means free capacity at installation time, not the drive’s advertised total size. Keep additional room for patches, shader caches and the operating system, because a drive that barely meets the number can become full immediately after installation. The cited listings establish an SSD requirement; they do not say that an NVMe drive is mandatory. Do not turn a generic SSD requirement into an unsupported claim about a particular interface or a guaranteed performance gain.

If your current drive is too small or is not an SSD, check the motherboard’s supported interfaces, available bays or slots, and whether the case and power cables allow an additional drive. Move or reinstall the game only after confirming that the destination has the required free space.

Two real requirement examples

The following figures illustrate how to read a listing. They are not a universal specification for other games.

Game and source Published performance condition Memory Storage CPU/GPU interpretation
Cyberpunk 2077, CD PROJEKT RED update, June 11, 2023 Revised minimum intended for 1080p, Low preset, average 30 FPS 12 GB at the revised minimum 70 GB SSD The listing has separate processor and graphics-card tiers; exact models are not stated in the evidence summarized here. Check the current official tier for your chosen settings, including ray tracing.
Monster Hunter Wilds, Valve/Capcom Steam listing; publication date not shown on the accessed listing 1080p, Medium, 60 FPS with Frame Generation enabled 16 GB SSD required; 75 GB available space CPU and GPU models are not stated in the evidence summarized here. Use the current listing and retain the Frame Generation condition when comparing.

The contrast is the point: one figure is a revised minimum at an average 30 FPS, while the other is a 60-FPS target that depends on frame generation. Neither should be copied into a shopping list for an unrelated game.

Check the rest of the platform before upgrading

Motherboard and firmware

A replacement CPU must fit the motherboard socket and be supported by its firmware. Memory upgrades also depend on the board’s generation, slot count and maximum capacity. Confirm these details in the motherboard manual or the manufacturer’s support page before ordering.

Power supply and connectors

A faster graphics card can require different power connectors and more capacity from the power supply. Read the card manufacturer’s electrical requirements and inspect the existing unit’s label and cables. Do not assume that a card will work safely because it fits the slot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Case clearance and cooling

Measure graphics-card length, thickness and radiator or fan clearance. Ensure that the CPU cooler is compatible with the socket and that the case has a practical airflow path. Thermal throttling can reduce sustained performance even when the parts satisfy a paper requirement.

  • RAM: 32GB DDR4 3200MHz (16GB*2) SSD: 1TB M.2 NVMe PCIe
  • Power supply: 650W (80plus bronze) certified for energy efficiency and stable performance

Drive interface and installation space

For an SSD upgrade, verify whether the board has an open M.2 slot, a compatible connector or an available 2.5-inch bay. Check lane sharing and mounting hardware where relevant, then confirm that the operating system can see and initialize the new volume.

Decide whether to upgrade or replace the PC

Use the game checklist to classify the gap:

  • Only storage is short: add or replace the drive after checking interface, mounting and free-space needs.
  • RAM is below the listed figure: check motherboard capacity and install a compatible kit; account for the applications you keep open.
  • GPU is below the target tier: compare the intended resolution, preset and feature set before selecting a replacement. A card for 1080p rasterized play may not satisfy a ray-tracing or higher-resolution target.
  • CPU is below the target tier: confirm socket and firmware options. A platform change may be necessary if the board cannot support a suitable processor.
  • Several core parts are below target: calculate the platform requirements together. Replacing CPU, motherboard, memory, power supply and GPU separately can create compatibility and cost issues that a complete rebuild avoids.

Do not upgrade solely because a specification list looks old. Upgrade when it fails the requirements for the games and settings you actually want, or when testing shows a repeatable limitation.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Treating a label as a benchmark

Minimum and recommended are shorthand for a developer’s configuration tiers. They do not promise identical frame rates across every scene, patch or display. Always preserve the attached resolution, preset and feature assumptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Matching only the GPU

CPU, RAM and storage remain independent checks. A graphics-card match cannot establish that the processor meets the requirement, particularly in a processor-intensive title.

Confusing installed capacity with free space

A drive advertised as 75 GB is not necessarily able to provide 75 GB of free space after formatting and existing files. Compare the listing’s available-space figure with the free capacity shown by the operating system.

Assuming NVMe is mandatory

An SSD requirement does not, by itself, specify NVMe. Use the interface named by the game or hardware documentation; do not infer a more specific standard.

Ignoring patches and store updates

Requirements can change. Recheck the official listing after major updates and immediately before purchasing parts, especially when a store page and an older publisher article show different figures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical pre-purchase checklist

  • List the exact games and the display resolution you will use.
  • Record each game’s minimum and recommended CPU and GPU tiers.
  • Capture the stated preset, frame-rate target and any ray-tracing, upscaling or frame-generation condition.
  • Compare installed RAM with the title’s figure and consider simultaneous applications.
  • Confirm SSD status and the required free space, not just total drive capacity.
  • Verify motherboard, firmware, case, cooling, power-supply and drive compatibility for every proposed part.
  • Recheck the current official listing because patches and store pages may change.

The most defensible answer to “what PC specs do I need?” is therefore a game-by-game match. Choose the experience first, read the requirement under its stated conditions, and upgrade the component that fails that specific test rather than buying to a universal specification that does not exist.
