Recommended Free Tools
For a smooth League of Legends experience on Windows, aim for Riot’s recommended specification rather than its minimum: an Intel Core i5-8250 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200 processor, a GeForce 560, Radeon HD 6950 or Intel UHD 630-class GPU with 2GB of VRAM, 4GB of RAM, a 16GB SSD, Windows 11 x64 with TPM 2.0, and hardware capable of DirectX 11 feature level 11_0. Riot lists the minimum tier only as a compatibility floor and warns that systems meeting only those figures may still have performance problems.
On Mac, Riot lists Apple M1, a Metal-capable GPU, macOS 12, 8GB of unified memory and 40GB of available storage. The official requirements do not promise a particular frame rate, so “smoothly” depends on resolution, graphics settings, drivers, heat, background software and future game patches as well as the parts in your computer.

Official Windows requirements: minimum versus recommended
Riot Games’ current requirements, published September 22, 2026, separate a minimum configuration from a recommended one. The minimum column is enough to establish basic compatibility, but it is not a performance guarantee. Riot’s own warning is explicit: “If your setup meets only the minimum requirements, you may still see performance issues.” Use the recommended column as the buying target if you want more useful headroom for 1080p play.
| Component | Minimum requirement | Recommended target |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Intel Core i3-530 or AMD FX-4100; SSE 4.2 support | Intel Core i5-8250 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200; SSE 4.2 support |
| GPU | GeForce 400 Series, AMD HD 6570 or Intel HD 4600; DirectX 11-level hardware; 1GB VRAM | NVIDIA GeForce 560, AMD Radeon HD 6950 or Intel UHD 630; DirectX 11-level hardware; 2GB VRAM |
| Memory | 2GB RAM | 4GB RAM |
| Storage | 16GB HDD | 16GB SSD |
| Operating system | Retail Windows 10 build 19041 or newer, or Windows 11; x64. Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0 | Windows 11, x64, with TPM 2.0 |
| Graphics preset listed by Riot | Low | High |
| Resolution listed by Riot | 1024×768 | 1920×1080 |
These figures come from Riot Games’ League of Legends system-requirements page. Riot identifies 2GB of RAM, 4GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, 1GB of VRAM and 2GB of VRAM as the corresponding capacities in its table; those numbers should not be read as total free space or memory available after Windows and other applications consume resources.

CPU compatibility matters more than the model name
Both Windows tiers require SSE 4.2. A processor can appear fast enough on paper and still fail the requirement if it lacks that instruction-set support. The listed processors are reference points, not a complete list of compatible CPUs: a newer x64 processor with SSE 4.2 can be a sensible choice, provided the rest of the system also meets the graphics and operating-system requirements.
DirectX 11 feature level is a hard floor
Riot now requires DirectX 11 feature level 11_0 on Windows. “DirectX 11” on a product box is not sufficient if the GPU does not expose feature level 11_0. Integrated graphics can qualify when they provide the required feature level and enough practical headroom, but the exact GPU model and driver matter. Riot’s Windows table does not support ARM CPUs.
Mac requirements
Riot’s Mac guidance is materially different from the Windows table. It lists Apple M1 as both the minimum and recommended CPU platform, a Metal-capable GPU, macOS 12, 8GB of unified memory and 40GB of available storage.
| Component | Riot’s Mac requirement |
|---|---|
| CPU platform | Apple M1 minimum and recommended |
| GPU API | Metal-capable GPU |
| Operating system | macOS 12 |
| Unified memory | 8GB |
| Available storage | 40GB |
| Graphics preset | Low minimum; High recommended |
| Resolution | 1680×1050 recommended |
Intel Macs may continue to run the game, but Riot says its support focus is primarily Apple Silicon. An Intel-specific issue may therefore not be investigated or resolved. The Mac figures and qualification are stated on the same Riot support page.

What “smoothly” means in practice
Riot does not publish a guaranteed FPS, frame-time or monitor-refresh result in the requirements table. You should not treat 60 FPS, 120 FPS or any other number as an official promise. A machine that clears the recommended column is a stronger starting point, but the result can change with several variables:
- Resolution and settings: Rendering at 1920×1080 places more load on the GPU than 1024×768. Higher effects, shadows and character detail also reduce headroom.
- Drivers: A correctly installed graphics driver can affect compatibility and stability.
- Thermals: A laptop that is fast when cool can reduce clock speeds when its CPU or GPU overheats.
- Background software: Browsers, recording tools, overlays, updates and other applications compete for CPU, memory and storage activity.
- Game updates: Future patches can alter performance, so today’s result is not a permanent guarantee.
For a buying decision, use the recommended Windows column as the practical target and treat the minimum column as the point below which compatibility is uncertain or performance issues are more likely.

Win, typedxdiag, open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool and inspect the Display or Render tab. Check the GPU model, driver and feature levels. The requirement is DirectX 11 feature level 11_0, not merely a reference to DirectX somewhere in the driver panel. - Check installed memory. In Settings > System > About, compare installed RAM with Riot’s 2GB minimum and 4GB recommendation. Remember that Windows and other programs use part of the installed amount.
- Check free storage and drive type. Open Settings > System > Storage to verify at least 16GB of available space for the Windows requirement and determine whether the game is on an HDD or SSD. Riot lists an SSD in its recommended column.
- Verify Windows edition and architecture. In Settings > System > About, check that the system is x64. Windows 10 must be a retail build numbered 19041 or newer; the recommended target is Windows 11. Windows 11 systems also need TPM 2.0.
- Check laptop power and temperature behavior. Test while connected to the charger and with ventilation clear. A laptop may meet the component list yet perform inconsistently if it is operating in a quiet, battery-saving or thermally limited mode.
On a Mac, choose Apple menu > About This Mac to identify the chip, memory and macOS version. Open System Settings > General > Storage for available space, and use System Information > Graphics/Displays to inspect the graphics hardware. Compare the result with the M1, Metal, macOS 12, 8GB and 40GB requirements rather than with Windows numbers.

How to choose or upgrade a Windows PC
A new system should meet every recommended row instead of overspending on one component while leaving another below the target. The following priorities make the trade-offs clearer.
1. Start with the operating system and compatibility floor
Confirm Windows 11 x64 and TPM 2.0 before comparing cosmetic features or monitor size. Then verify SSE 4.2 on the CPU and DirectX 11 feature level 11_0 on the GPU. A computer that fails either compatibility check is the wrong foundation, even if it has ample RAM.
2. Prefer the recommended CPU and GPU tier
The recommended processors—Intel Core i5-8250 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200—provide more margin than the minimum Core i3-530 or FX-4100 references. For graphics, target at least the GeForce 560, Radeon HD 6950 or Intel UHD 630 class with 2GB of VRAM. These are older reference parts, so a newer model that supports the same required feature level can be appropriate; compare actual specifications rather than relying on a brand or “gaming” badge.

3. Treat 4GB as a floor for a new Windows purchase
Riot’s 2GB figure is the minimum, while 4GB is the recommended amount. Because the operating system, launcher, voice chat and browser tabs also consume memory, a machine with only 2GB leaves little working room. If you are upgrading an older PC, verify the memory generation (such as DDR3 or DDR4), module form factor, motherboard capacity limit and the number of open slots before buying a kit. A physically incompatible module will not solve a memory shortage.

4. Use an SSD when possible
Riot lists 16GB on an HDD as minimum and 16GB on an SSD as recommended. The requirement concerns available capacity, not the total advertised size of the drive. Leave additional free space for Windows updates, temporary files and other applications; a drive that is technically large enough but nearly full can cause broader system problems.
5. Match the display to the intended setting
Riot’s recommended Windows resolution is 1920×1080, while its minimum example is 1024×768. If you buy a 1080p monitor, make sure the GPU can sustain that resolution at the intended preset. Lowering resolution or graphics quality is a practical way to reduce load on hardware that is compatible but short on headroom.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common causes of poor performance after installation
The PC meets minimum specs but stutters
This is consistent with Riot’s warning about minimum-only systems. First lower the resolution and graphics preset, close unnecessary background applications and check that the game is using the intended GPU on a laptop. Then update the graphics driver and confirm that the system is not overheating or running in a battery-saving mode.
The game will not start because of a graphics error
Use dxdiag to verify DirectX 11 feature level 11_0 and install the manufacturer’s current driver for the GPU. If the hardware does not expose that feature level, a software setting cannot create it; the graphics adapter must be replaced or the computer must be upgraded.

Loading feels slow even though gameplay is acceptable
Check whether League is installed on an HDD and whether the drive is nearly full. Moving the installation to an SSD that has sufficient free space addresses the storage tier in Riot’s recommended table, although it does not guarantee a specific in-game frame rate.
Performance degrades during a long session
Inspect temperatures and airflow, especially on a laptop. Clear blocked vents, use a hard surface and select a performance power profile when plugged in. If clocks fall as the system heats up, the limitation is thermal rather than a missing League setting.
Unsupported operating systems
Riot states that League of Legends is supported only on Windows and Mac OS. It cannot provide support for Linux, SteamOS or Bazzite OS. Compatibility layers or community workarounds may change over time, but they are outside Riot’s supported configurations and should not be treated as a dependable buying target.
