This target is deliberately higher than the lowest common denominator. It gives you room for large environments, traffic, weather, streaming assets and modern post-processing without assuming that every game uses the same engine or quality preset.

How to interpret the CPU requirements
Why a modern six-core chip is the useful target
Open-world racers continually process traffic, opponents, physics, audio, weather, streaming and online activity while the GPU renders the scene. A newer six-core CPU is therefore a better buying target than simply matching an old minimum model. The published ranges illustrate the spread: Forza Horizon 5 moves from an i5-4460/Ryzen 3 1200 minimum to an i5-8400/Ryzen 5 1500X recommendation, while Need for Speed Unbound asks for an i5-8600/Ryzen 5 2600 minimum and an i7-8700/Ryzen 5 3600 recommendation. Solar Crown has the largest generational jump, from an i7-4790K/Ryzen 5 2600 minimum to an i7-11700K/Ryzen 7 3700X recommendation.
What to check in a used or existing PC
- Confirm the exact CPU model rather than relying on the family name; an older i7 is not automatically faster than a newer i5.
- Check sustained clock behavior and cooling. Thermal throttling can cause frame-time spikes even when the nominal model meets a requirement.
- For a laptop, compare the processor’s power limit and cooling design with the desktop-equivalent name; mobile parts can perform differently.
- If the game runs with a low average frame rate but the GPU is rarely near full utilization, the CPU or background processes may be limiting performance.
RAM capacity and system memory
Sixteen gigabytes is the safest shared target because both Forza Horizon 5 and Need for Speed Unbound list 16 GB as recommended. Solar Crown lists 12 GB for both minimum and recommended tiers. Eight gigabytes appears only in the minimum tiers for the first two games, leaving less headroom for Windows, launchers, browser tabs and background utilities.

How to configure 16 GB sensibly
Use a matched 2×8 GB kit when possible so the memory controller can operate in dual-channel mode. If your system has 8 GB, moving to 16 GB is usually a more reliable improvement for open-world streaming than adding a small amount of faster memory while keeping capacity unchanged. Before buying, verify your motherboard’s memory type, slot count and maximum supported capacity. Mixing unmatched modules can work, but it may force lower speeds or create stability problems.
Choosing the graphics card
The GPU determines visual quality
The published recommended classes span from the GTX 1070/RX 590 for Forza Horizon 5, through the RTX 2070/RX 5700 for Need for Speed Unbound, to the RTX 2080/RX 6650 for Solar Crown. This spread is why there is no single “open-world racing GPU.” Texture quality, shadows, reflections, draw distance, effects and upscaling can change the load dramatically.
VRAM and feature support
The cited listings do not provide a universal VRAM threshold, so do not treat an unlisted capacity as an official requirement. Instead, check the specific card’s VRAM and the game’s texture-quality guidance. A card that meets the shader-performance class but has limited memory may need reduced textures or resolution in a large, continuously streamed map. DirectX 12 support is explicitly required in the Forza Horizon 5 and Need for Speed Unbound listings, and modern feature support also affects access to the upscalers named by Solar Crown.

Integrated graphics versus a discrete card
None of the three published tiers is designed around ordinary integrated graphics. The minimum lists begin at GTX 1050 Ti/RX 570-class hardware for two games, with Forza Horizon 5 listing GTX 970, RX 470 or Arc A380. Systems without a discrete GPU should be treated as outside the stated target unless the exact title documents support for that integrated processor.
SSD, capacity and installation planning
Solar Crown marks an SSD as mandatory, while the three games list 50 GB to 110 GB of installation space. Even where an HDD is technically accepted, an SSD can reduce asset-streaming stalls and makes large updates less disruptive. The 110 GB figure is the safer planning baseline because it covers both Forza Horizon 5 and Solar Crown.
How much free space to leave
Do not fill a drive to its final gigabyte. Keep additional free capacity for temporary download files, decompression, shader caches, save data and future patches. A 1 TB SSD gives substantially more working room than a drive sized barely above the installation requirement, especially if Windows and other games share it.

HDD upgrade decision
- If you already meet the CPU, RAM and GPU targets but use an HDD, an SSD is the first upgrade for smoother streaming and shorter load times.
- If the game is installed on an SSD but the operating system drive is nearly full, move or uninstall unused software before replacing otherwise adequate hardware.
- Check the interface supported by your motherboard or laptop; an NVMe drive cannot deliver its expected behavior if the slot or firmware does not support it.
Resolution, frame rate and upscaling
“Can it run?” is incomplete without a performance target. Minimum specifications do not promise 60 FPS. Solar Crown is unusually explicit: its minimum tier is tied to low 1080p at 30 FPS using FSR 2 Ultra Performance, while its recommended tier targets medium 1080p at 60 FPS with DLSS or FSR 2 Balanced. Those assumptions materially affect image quality and should be included when comparing a prospective PC.

Upscaling renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the output. It can raise frame rate, but Ultra Performance modes trade away more detail than Balanced modes. Treat the named mode as part of the published performance target, not as a free substitute for faster hardware.
Operating-system, API and network checks
Verify software compatibility before buying components. Forza Horizon 5 specifies Windows 10 version 18362 or newer and DirectX 12. Need for Speed Unbound specifies 64-bit Windows 10 and DirectX 12. The listings summarized here do not provide a separate Windows build number for Solar Crown, so check its current store page for the edition you intend to install.

Broadband internet is listed for Forza Horizon 5 and Need for Speed Unbound. A fast connection does not compensate for high local latency, an unstable Wi-Fi link or a router that blocks required services. Use a wired connection or strong 5 GHz/6 GHz Wi-Fi when online events stutter while offline driving remains smooth.
Should you upgrade or replace the PC?
Upgrade the GPU first when
- The GPU is at or near 99% utilization during slowdowns and lowering resolution raises frame rate.
- You want higher textures, reflections, shadows or a higher refresh-rate display.
- Your CPU already resembles the recommended tier and 16 GB RAM is installed.
Upgrade memory or storage first when
- Windows and the game together approach the available RAM, causing paging or severe hitching.
- The game is installed on an HDD, particularly for Solar Crown, which requires an SSD.
- The system drive has little free space for a 50–110 GB installation and its updates.
Consider a new system when
- The processor is below the oldest listed minimum and the motherboard cannot accept a modern replacement.
- The power supply, case clearance or cooling cannot support a suitable discrete GPU.
- You need a CPU, GPU, RAM and SSD upgrade simultaneously; replacing several platform components can cost more and leave less upgrade flexibility than a current system.
A pre-purchase compatibility checklist
- Choose the exact game and read its current minimum and recommended listing; requirements differ materially between titles.
- Set a target such as 1080p/30 FPS or 1080p/60 FPS before selecting parts.
- Compare your CPU model with the listed generation, not merely its marketing tier.
- Confirm the discrete GPU model, DirectX 12 support and available VRAM for your intended texture settings.
- Install 16 GB RAM when building for multiple current open-world racers, using matched modules where possible.
- Reserve at least 110 GB for the largest cited installations, plus extra headroom for updates.
- Use an SSD, and treat it as mandatory for Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown.
- Check 64-bit Windows, the required Windows build where stated, drivers and broadband connectivity.
- Verify the power supply, connectors, case dimensions and cooling before purchasing a graphics card.
Common symptoms and fixes
Low average FPS with high GPU usage
Lower the output resolution or use a less aggressive quality preset. If performance improves proportionally, the GPU is the constraint; a faster card is the durable fix.
Stutters when entering new districts
Move the installation to an SSD, close memory-heavy background programs and check that the system is not paging. If the GPU is not fully loaded during the hitch, CPU scheduling, storage or RAM capacity is more likely than raw graphics power.

Reduce traffic density, world detail and CPU-heavy simulation options before lowering texture quality. Verify that the processor is maintaining its expected clock speed and that temperatures are not triggering throttling.
The game will not launch
Confirm 64-bit Windows, the required DirectX version, current graphics drivers and the exact minimum GPU. For Forza Horizon 5, also verify Windows 10 build 18362 or newer. Insufficient free storage can interrupt installation or patching even when the original download fit.
