The graphics card will probably be the first PC component to determine GTA 6 performance if your priorities are high resolution, ray tracing, reflections, lighting quality or upscaling. A capable processor will be almost as important for consistent frame times in crowded, simulation-heavy scenes. Memory and storage form the baseline: Rockstar’s current PC reference for GTAV Enhanced is 16GB of dual-channel RAM and a 105GB DirectStorage-compatible drive.
That is planning guidance, not a GTA 6 system requirement. Rockstar has announced GTA 6 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with Xbox listing November 19, 2026, but the cited Rockstar material contains no PC requirements. You cannot yet certify a particular computer as GTA 6-ready from an official specification.

What is officially known about GTA 6 on PC?
There is no official GTA 6 PC system-requirements table in the available Rockstar material. Rockstar’s product listing says, “You can pre-order Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.” Xbox gives the console release date as November 19, 2026. Neither announcement establishes a PC release date, minimum processor, graphics card, memory amount, storage requirement or target frame rate for a PC version.
That distinction matters because console hardware cannot be translated directly into a PC shopping list. Consoles use a fixed platform with shared memory, a known storage subsystem and a developer-controlled graphics profile. A PC port could expose more settings, support different upscalers and offer frame-rate options that do not exist on the launch console build.

The most defensible approach is therefore to identify which components control each performance characteristic, then compare your current system with Rockstar’s latest PC reference point rather than treating any rumored GTA 6 specification as fact.

For most upgrades, use this order: GPU first for image quality and throughput, CPU next for simulation-heavy frame-time stability, then RAM capacity and SSD capacity or speed if either is a constraint. A system that is badly unbalanced can change the order; the diagnostic steps below help identify that case.
Why the GPU is the clearest performance lever
Resolution and rendering workload
Every increase in output resolution requires the graphics processor to shade more pixels. Moving from 1080p to 1440p or 4K therefore raises GPU workload even when the game’s simulation is unchanged. A faster GPU also gives the renderer more room for higher-quality shadows, reflections, volumetric effects and draw distances.
Ray tracing and advanced lighting
Rockstar’s GTAV Enhanced PC feature list documents ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination, as well as ray-traced shadows and reflections. Those effects add GPU work and can make graphics-card capability more important than the processor. GTA 6 may use a different implementation, but a PC port that exposes comparable effects will favor a GPU with strong ray-tracing performance and enough video memory.

Upscaling headroom
GTAV Enhanced supports AMD FSR and NVIDIA DLSS. Upscaling renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the output, reducing the number of pixels the GPU must shade. It is not free: image quality, motion reconstruction and preset support vary by game. A GPU with additional performance headroom lets you choose a higher internal resolution or a more demanding quality mode instead of relying on the most aggressive performance setting.
VRAM capacity
Rockstar’s current GTAV Enhanced recommended graphics cards each have 8GB of VRAM. That figure is a useful reference for judging present-day PC capacity, not proof that GTA 6 will require 8GB or any other amount. Higher-resolution textures, ray-traced data and a large streamed world can all consume video memory. If VRAM is exhausted, stuttering or texture-quality compromises can appear even when average GPU utilization looks acceptable.
For a prospective GTA 6 build, compare graphics cards by performance at your intended resolution, ray-tracing capability, upscaler support and VRAM headroom. Do not choose solely by model number or average frame rate from another game.

Open-world simulation is different from rendering
The processor handles work that the GPU cannot: traffic decisions, NPC behavior, physics, weather state, mission logic, animation preparation, world streaming management and other game-system tasks. A dense downtown scene can therefore become CPU-limited even if lowering resolution leaves unused GPU capacity.

Frame-time consistency matters more than the average
A CPU bottleneck often appears as uneven frame times rather than a dramatic collapse in the headline average. You may see a graphics card operating below full utilization while the game produces hitching or low 1% lows during busy intersections, rapid travel or weather changes. A stronger CPU with good per-core and multi-threaded performance can keep those simulation steps within each frame’s time budget.
What the reported 30 FPS target does—and does not—show
Tom’s Hardware reported that Rockstar North head of development Rob Nelson said a demonstrated build “runs at 30 FPS for now.” The report attributed discussion of high NPC density, dynamic weather, physics and traffic AI pressing the CPU to Digital Foundry, not to an official PC specification. This is useful context for why CPU performance may matter in GTA 6, but it does not establish a PC processor requirement or prove that the final game will be locked to 30 FPS.
If your goal is a high-refresh-rate PC experience, CPU frame-time performance becomes more important as the target frame rate rises. A 60 FPS target allows about 16.7 milliseconds per frame; a 120 FPS target allows about 8.3 milliseconds. The game’s eventual settings and optimization will determine whether those targets are available.
How much RAM should you plan for?
Rockstar’s GTAV Enhanced recommended PC specification calls for 16GB of dual-channel system memory. That is the strongest published reference point available, but it is not a GTA 6 number. A PC running the game alongside a browser, recording software, voice chat or creative applications can need more headroom than a clean game-only test.

Use two matched memory modules when your platform supports dual-channel operation, and check that the installed capacity is actually recognized in the operating system. If the game begins paging to disk, hitching can occur regardless of graphics-card speed. Additional capacity may improve multitasking and provide more room for a future PC port, but no official GTA 6 memory tier has been announced.
Why an SSD matters for streaming but not automatically for frame rate
Rockstar says GTAV Enhanced provides quicker access to the action because Los Santos and Blaine County load faster when using an SSD and DirectStorage on supported devices. Its recommended PC specification lists a 105GB DirectStorage-compatible drive.
That establishes storage as a baseline concern for loading and world streaming. An SSD can reduce load times and help the game deliver assets as you move through the world, while DirectStorage can change how data reaches the GPU on compatible systems. Storage speed alone does not guarantee a higher rendered frame rate once the required assets are already available; GPU and CPU limits still govern frame production.

Keep enough free space for the installation and updates. The 105GB figure belongs to GTAV Enhanced, so do not treat it as GTA 6’s final capacity. A fast NVMe drive with ample free space is a sensible planning choice, but wait for Rockstar’s PC specification before buying storage solely for a claimed GTA 6 number.

How to decide whether to upgrade your GPU or CPU
- Set a target. Write down your intended resolution, frame rate and whether you want ray tracing. “Playable” is not a single hardware requirement; 1080p at a modest frame rate and 4K with ray-traced effects are very different workloads.
- Check current utilization in a comparable game. GTAV Enhanced is a useful Rockstar-made reference, but it is not a GTA 6 benchmark. During a demanding scene, a GPU near full utilization usually points toward a graphics-card limit. Low GPU utilization combined with poor frame-time lows points toward CPU, memory or streaming work.
- Check VRAM and system-memory usage. Texture-related stutter or settings that exceed available VRAM indicate a graphics-memory constraint. Paging, rapidly rising system-memory use or background applications consuming most RAM indicate a capacity problem.
- Check storage health and free space. An older hard drive, nearly full SSD or drive with poor sustained performance can make loading and streaming less reliable. It will not be fixed by replacing the CPU alone.
- Upgrade the limiting part, then reassess. Replacing a GPU will not cure a CPU simulation limit, and replacing a CPU will not create ray-tracing performance or VRAM. Avoid paying for a faster component that your target settings cannot use.

Common mistakes to avoid
Treating console specifications as PC requirements
Console platform announcements confirm where the game is launching, not what a future PC port will require. Do not infer a precise CPU, GPU or RAM tier from the console release.
Assuming one component controls every frame
Rendering, simulation, memory capacity and data streaming can bottleneck different scenes. A graphics-card upgrade is the logical first move for resolution and ray tracing, but a CPU upgrade may produce a larger improvement in crowded areas if the GPU was already waiting.
Confusing storage capacity with storage speed
A larger drive gives the installation and updates room to fit. A faster, supported SSD affects loading and streaming behavior. Neither substitutes for graphics or processor performance.

Until Rockstar publishes PC requirements, exact “minimum” and “recommended” GTA 6 builds are speculation. Use the GTAV Enhanced figures as current reference points and keep a return or upgrade plan flexible until official specifications appear.
Can your current PC run GTA 6?
There is no authoritative yes-or-no test yet because Rockstar has not published PC requirements in the cited material. You can still document your starting point:
- Record your CPU model, GPU model, VRAM amount, system RAM configuration and SSD type.
- Note whether the graphics card supports the ray-tracing and upscaling features you want.
- Confirm that memory runs in dual-channel mode where supported.
- Check that your SSD has room beyond the game installation for updates and normal operating-system use.
- Use GTAV Enhanced performance as a rough platform-health signal, not as proof of GTA 6 compatibility.
When Rockstar announces a PC version, compare every published requirement with this inventory. Pay particular attention to the stated target resolution, frame rate, ray-tracing presets, VRAM, RAM and storage technology; those details will tell you whether the recommendation is aimed at a basic rasterized profile or a higher-quality configuration.
Bottom line for an eventual GTA 6 PC upgrade
Start with the GPU if you want sharper resolution, ray tracing, better reflections, advanced lighting or more upscaling quality. Prioritize the CPU when your main concern is smooth frame delivery through dense traffic, NPC and physics scenes. Treat 16GB dual-channel RAM and a fast, DirectStorage-capable SSD as the current Rockstar PC reference baseline from GTAV Enhanced, not as confirmed GTA 6 requirements. Until an official PC specification arrives, a balanced system matched to your chosen resolution and frame-rate target is safer than buying to a rumored parts list.
