What PC Game Launchers Do—and Why Games Use Different Ones

A PC game launcher is the application that connects you to a game’s store account, installation files, updates and, sometimes, online services. Steam and Epic Games Launcher can all sell and start games, but a launcher may also provide cloud saves, friends, controller settings, mods or developer services. Because those features, accounts and purchase agreements belong to different companies, the same game can involve more than one launcher.

Storefront, launcher and game account are different things

People often use “store,” “client” and “launcher” as if they mean the same software. They overlap, but each has a distinct job.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Layer What it does Who controls it
Storefront Displays games, prices and editions; processes a purchase and records the entitlement. The store operator, such as Steam or Epic Games Store.
Launcher or client Signs you in, downloads files, installs patches and starts the game. It may also provide chat, friends, cloud saves, workshop tools or controller features. The platform operator or publisher that supplies the application.
Game account and online service Identifies your character, multiplayer profile, progression, statistics and other data inside a particular game. The game developer or publisher, or a service it integrates.

One application can perform all three roles. A store purchase can create a platform entitlement, while the game separately asks you to link a publisher account for multiplayer or progression. Other titles use only the store account and have no additional sign-in. The exact arrangement is decided per game.

What a launcher actually does

Library and entitlement check

After you sign in, the client displays the games associated with your account. When you press Install or Play, it checks that the account owns or has access to the title. That check is an entitlement to use the game through that store; it is not automatically a transferable license for every other store.

Download, installation and updates

The launcher chooses a download region or server, retrieves the game files and places them in a library folder. It can verify missing or damaged files, apply patches and show the update status. Automatic updates are convenient, but a large patch can consume bandwidth or storage before you start the game. Most clients let you schedule downloads, limit bandwidth or pause an update.

Starting the game

The Play button may start the executable directly, or it may invoke another application first. A store client can pass an authentication token to a publisher service, check downloadable content and then launch the game. Seeing two windows does not by itself mean either application is malfunctioning; it may be the title’s required account and service chain.

Account, social and multiplayer services

Platform clients can provide friends lists, invitations, voice or text chat, achievements and matchmaking APIs. A game may use those services, its own account system, or both. The account shown in a store’s friends list may therefore differ from the identity used for a character or competitive ranking.

Cloud saves and synchronization

Cloud-save support lets a client upload save files and download them on another computer, but it is conditional on the game implementing the feature. Conflicts can occur when you play offline on one device and then reconnect after another device has uploaded a different save. Read the conflict dialog carefully; choosing the wrong copy can overwrite newer progress.

Mods, controllers and other extras

Some platforms integrate a mod workshop, controller configuration or accessibility settings. Steam describes Workshop for supported games, not for every title. A game can instead require manual mod installation or a separate mod manager. Likewise, a client’s controller support does not guarantee that every game recognizes every controller layout.

Why one game can appear on several launchers

Different distribution and payment infrastructure

Each store supplies its own product pages, regional pricing controls, payment methods, download network and refund process. Epic’s developer materials describe tools for product pages, offers, builds, updates, backend services, support and analytics. Steamworks documentation describes update publishing, payments, language support, cloud saves, reviews and optional DRM. A publisher can select the platform whose tools and audience fit its release plans.

Audience and discovery

A store’s existing users, search tools, wish lists, reviews and promotions can help a game reach players. These are possible business considerations, not a universal explanation for every release. A publisher may also sell directly through its own site or use several stores to reach different audiences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Online services and account control

Some games need accounts for matchmaking, anti-cheat, voice, friends or persistent progression. A publisher may use its own service so that the same game identity can be recognized across supported platforms. This can add a sign-in step even when you bought the game from another store.

Commercial terms

Store fees and payment options influence platform choices. In a 2023 self-publishing announcement, Epic said publishers would receive 88% of revenue from games sold through the Epic Games Store and could use their own or a third-party payment solution for in-app purchases. That was Epic’s published term for that announcement, not a current guarantee for every product or store.

Technical and release strategy

Developers may already have tools, testing pipelines or customer-support systems built around a particular platform. They may launch on one store first, add another later, or use different platforms for different editions. None of these choices proves that a launcher is technically required for every version of a game.

Does buying a game on one store unlock it on another?

Usually, no. A purchase creates an entitlement in the store where the transaction occurred unless the publisher explicitly provides a cross-store arrangement. Epic’s support guidance states that a game purchased through Steam, Origin or Ubisoft Connect cannot be played through Epic Games Launcher; to use Epic’s launcher, the game must be purchased through the Epic Games Store.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That rule is specific to Epic’s documented policy and should not be generalized to every platform. Check the game’s store listing and the publisher’s support page before buying a second copy. A launcher may detect an installation made elsewhere, but detecting files is not the same as granting ownership.

What account linking changes

A game can ask you to connect a store account to a publisher or game account. Linking may enable friends, cross-platform progression, downloadable content checks or a single multiplayer identity. It can also create confusion if you sign in with a different account from the one originally linked.

  • Confirm which email address or platform profile is connected before accepting a link.
  • Do not assume that unlinking is reversible; some services restrict how often accounts can be changed.
  • Keep the store receipt and the game-account details together for support requests.
  • Use the same linked identity on each computer if you expect shared progression.

Epic’s multiplayer guidance warns that account identity and storefront identity can differ. A game may therefore show one name in the store client and another in its own friends or profile system.

Cross-store multiplayer, cross-save and cross-progression are separate

The fact that a title is sold in two stores does not prove that players can meet in the same match. Cross-store multiplayer requires the developer to connect the relevant networking, identity and matchmaking services. Epic Online Services describes cross-platform tools that can connect players from different PC stores, but a game must integrate and configure those tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Capability What it means What to verify
Cross-play Players on different stores or platforms can join the same multiplayer session. Supported stores, modes, regions and version requirements for the specific game.
Cross-store friends You can find or invite a friend whose copy came from another store. Whether the game uses a shared friends service and how names or account IDs are entered.
Cross-save Save data can synchronize between supported devices or stores. Which modes and platforms are covered and whether cloud conflicts are possible.
Cross-progression Persistent inventory, unlocks or levels follow the linked game account. Whether progression is stored by the game service rather than by a single store.

These features can exist independently. A game might support cross-play but keep saves local to each platform, or share progression while using separate matchmaking pools.

How Steam and Epic differ in practical terms

The following is a feature guide, not a promise that every game uses every platform capability.

Decision point Steam Epic Games Store
Purchase entitlement Access is recorded in the Steam account and normally launches through Steam. Access is recorded in the Epic Games account and normally launches through Epic Games Launcher.
Updates and installation Steam client downloads, verifies and patches supported games. Epic Games Launcher downloads and updates games in its library.
Cloud saves Available where the game enables Steam Cloud. Available where the game enables Epic cloud saves; conflicts can follow offline play.
Mods Steam Workshop is available for supported titles. Mod support depends on the individual game and its tools.
Controller features Steam provides controller configuration features, subject to game support. Controller behavior depends on the launcher, game and any additional input layer.
Cross-store play Not automatic; the game developer must implement it. Not automatic; Epic’s cross-platform services still require game integration.
Second launcher Some games may open a publisher service. Some games may open a publisher service.

Prices, refunds, regional availability and operating-system support change over time. Compare the current listing for the exact edition and region rather than relying on a general platform reputation.

Installing and running a game that uses more than one launcher

  1. Read the store listing. Look for account requirements, online-only notices, third-party software and supported operating systems.
  2. Install the purchasing store’s client. Sign in to the account that owns the game and install it to a drive with sufficient free space for the base files and updates.
  3. Install or allow the required publisher service. If the game opens another client, use the same publisher account you intend to keep linked.
  4. Launch once while online. This allows entitlement checks, account linking and initial cloud-save setup to complete.
  5. Configure updates and saves. Set download limits or schedules, confirm the save location and enable cloud saves only if you understand how conflicts will be handled.
  6. Test multiplayer separately. Add a friend through the identity the game uses and verify that your intended mode supports cross-store play.

Common launcher problems and fixes

The game is installed but the launcher says you do not own it

Check that you are signed in to the purchasing account, not a second account on the same computer. If the files were copied from another store, use the correct client’s “locate” or verification function; copied files do not transfer the entitlement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game keeps opening a second client

Confirm whether the title lists a third-party account requirement. Sign in to the linked account, update both clients and avoid unlinking accounts during troubleshooting. If the second client is not required, verify the game files and check the publisher’s support instructions.

A cloud-save conflict appears

Stop and identify which device contains your newest progress. If you played offline, the local file may be newer than the cloud copy. Make a manual backup when possible, then choose the correct version instead of accepting the first button.

Friends on another store cannot join

Verify that both players are on the same game version, region and mode. Then check the title’s support documentation for cross-store invitations and account-linking requirements. Two store listings alone do not establish compatibility.

Offline play fails

Some games work offline after an initial authorization; others require a connection for login, anti-cheat or persistent online services. Test offline behavior before travelling, while the client is still online, and keep the game updated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A checklist for choosing where to buy

  • Which account will own the entitlement?
  • Will the game require a second launcher or publisher account?
  • Does the exact edition include the downloadable content you need?
  • Are cloud saves, cross-play and cross-progression explicitly supported?
  • How are mods installed, and are controller features suitable for your setup?
  • What happens if you play offline or move to another computer?
  • Are the current price, refund rules and regional restrictions acceptable for your location?

Thinking in these separate layers prevents the most common misunderstanding: a launcher is not merely a shortcut, and a store purchase is not automatically portable to every other launcher. The right choice depends on the specific game’s entitlement, account, multiplayer, save and support requirements.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
