UPI is only one payment rail. An Indian small business can also accept cash, cheques, debit and credit cards, NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, net banking, and wallets or other prepaid payment instruments. The practical choice depends on where you sell, what customers can access, how quickly you need cleared funds, your reconciliation workload, and the current terms offered by your bank, card acquirer or payment gateway. Most businesses get better coverage by combining methods instead of replacing UPI with a single alternative.
Choose by how you sell
The same business may need different acceptance methods at a shop counter, on an online checkout and on an invoice. A physical card terminal is not the same thing as an online gateway, and a bank transfer is not card acceptance. Map each payment to the sales situation before choosing equipment or a provider.

| Sales situation | Useful non-UPI methods | Main setup questions |
|---|---|---|
| Shop, stall or service counter | Cash, cards through a POS terminal, cheques and customer-initiated bank transfers | Do you need change, secure cash storage, a terminal, printed or digital receipts, and end-of-day reconciliation? |
| Website, app or social-commerce checkout | Cards, net banking and, where offered, wallets or prepaid instruments through a payment gateway | Which banks, card networks and wallets are supported? What are the settlement, refund and dispute rules? |
| Invoices and business-to-business collections | NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, cheques and cash where appropriate | How will you match the incoming credit to an invoice, and what timing and value limits apply? |
The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises’ digital-payment guidance lists cards, mobile wallets, net banking, NEFT, RTGS and IMPS among available modes. Reserve Bank of India material groups bank transfers, cards and electronic money as separate parts of India’s payment system. These categories are alternatives to UPI, not interchangeable names for the same transaction.

Cash requires no customer account, app, network connection or merchant onboarding, so it remains useful for local, in-person sales and customers who prefer notes and coins. It is also the simplest fallback when a digital payment instrument is unavailable.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What to plan for
- Change: Keep a controlled float and define who may access it.
- Security: Use a cash drawer or safe, limit access and set a deposit routine. Large balances increase theft and loss exposure.
- Counting and records: Record each sale and reconcile the drawer against the register at close.
- Deposits: Decide when and how takings reach the business bank account. Deposit timing affects working capital and risk.
- Returns: Write a clear cash-refund process and retain the original receipt or order reference.
Cash can be a sensible complement to digital methods, but it creates handling, custody and recordkeeping work that a bank transfer does not.
Cheques: useful for documented payments when clearing time is acceptable
A cheque can suit an invoice or recurring business relationship where the payer wants a paper instruction and both parties can tolerate clearing time. It can also provide a reference number that is easy to attach to an invoice file.
Risks and controls
- Do not treat a cheque as settled merely because it was received; record it as pending until the bank confirms clearance.
- Verify the payee name, date, amount in words and figures, and the cheque number before depositing.
- Track deposits and expected clearance dates so an unpaid invoice is not accidentally marked closed.
- Plan for dishonour, return charges and the follow-up needed to collect the amount.
Cheque acceptance is therefore a credit-and-reconciliation decision, not just another instant checkout button. Tell customers where to send or deliver the cheque and how you will acknowledge it.

Cards work for both physical and e-commerce transactions. A shop generally accepts them through a point-of-sale (POS) terminal supplied or enabled by a bank or card acquirer. An online seller normally presents card entry through a payment gateway. The gateway or acquirer is a service layer: it can connect one checkout to several payment methods, but the exact mix depends on its offering and the merchant’s eligibility.

Accepting cards in a shop
- Ask your business bank or acquiring provider whether it can onboard your business for card acceptance and which networks it supports.
- Confirm whether the proposed POS terminal works with your account, connectivity and receipt process. A terminal category is not a guarantee that a particular model will be compatible.
- Obtain the current transaction-fee, settlement and refund terms in writing. Rates and schedules vary by provider and can change.
- Train staff to check the terminal’s approved status and retain the transaction reference. Do not record customers’ full card details.
- Reconcile terminal batches or settlement reports to the till and to the bank credit.
Accepting cards online
- Choose a gateway that supports the card networks your customers use and integrates with your website, app or invoice link.
- Review onboarding requirements, supported currencies or regions if relevant to your sales, settlement timing, refund workflow and dispute process.
- Configure a success and failure response so an order is not created twice when a customer retries.
- Match each gateway transaction ID to the order and later settlement entry.
Card acceptance can broaden access for customers who do not use UPI, but it introduces merchant onboarding, equipment or integration work and transaction charges. The official material establishes the card-and-POS use case; it does not establish eligibility for a particular terminal or a universal fee.
Bank transfers: NEFT, RTGS and IMPS are different tools
A customer can pay directly from a bank account without using a UPI app. Ask the payer to use the beneficiary details supplied on the invoice, then reconcile the credit in your account. The three major transfer services differ in operating design and in the limits and charges a bank may apply.
| Method | Practical character | Check before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| NEFT | Bank-to-bank electronic transfer commonly used for invoices and routine collections. | Your bank’s initiation process, charges, beneficiary activation rules and expected credit timing. |
| RTGS | Real-time gross bank transfer, often considered for larger-value payments. | The bank’s current minimum or other value rules, charges, beneficiary details and processing conditions. |
| IMPS | National Payments Corporation of India describes it as a real-time service available round the clock. | Bank-specific limits and charges. The NPCI page accessed in 2026 states a ₹5 lakh per-transaction limit for most channels, with SMS and IVR exceptions; verify the live NPCI and bank terms before quoting or designing a workflow around that figure. |
Make transfer collection reconcile cleanly
- Put the legal business name, account number, bank name, branch or IFSC details and an invoice/reference number on the payment instruction.
- Ask the customer to include the invoice number in the transfer narration where the bank permits it.
- Do not mark an invoice paid from a screenshot alone. Confirm the credit in the business account or a trusted bank notification.
- Match amount, payer reference and value date to the ledger; investigate partial, duplicate or unidentified credits.
- Keep a separate status for “payment initiated” and “funds received.”
Transfer speed is not the same as final reconciliation speed. A customer may initiate a payment immediately while your staff still needs to verify the correct account credit and allocate it to an invoice.
Net banking at an online checkout
Net banking lets a buyer choose a bank and authorize payment through that bank’s online service. For a merchant, it is usually exposed through a payment gateway rather than through a custom connection to every bank. The gateway’s bank coverage, checkout design, fees and settlement conditions determine what the customer sees.

Questions for a gateway
- Which banks are available, and what happens when a selected bank is temporarily unavailable?
- How are successful, failed, pending and abandoned payments reported?
- When are funds settled, and are refunds sent back through the original method?
- How are disputes, chargebacks or customer claims handled for the methods offered?
- Can your accounting system export transaction and settlement references?
Net banking is distinct from a direct NEFT, RTGS or IMPS instruction. The customer pays inside an online checkout flow; the gateway manages the technical hand-off and reporting.
Wallets and other prepaid payment instruments
Wallets and prepaid cards hold stored value that a customer can spend with participating merchants. Competition Commission of India material describes wallets as prepaid payment instruments, while Reserve Bank material treats electronic money as a separate payment-system category from bank transfers and cards.
When they fit
They can help when a customer already has a balance in a particular wallet or when a business serves a closed customer community that uses a prepaid arrangement. Acceptance is not automatic: the merchant must be enabled for the specific wallet or instrument, and the provider controls availability, settlement and applicable conditions.

What to verify
- The exact wallets or prepaid instruments enabled on your terminal or gateway.
- Settlement timing and whether the credited amount is net of any charges.
- Refund and failed-transaction handling.
- Any geographic, customer or transaction restrictions in the provider agreement.
Do not advertise “wallets accepted” unless the named instruments are actually active on your merchant setup.

Build a practical non-UPI mix
For a physical shop
Keep cash for universal access, add card acceptance through a compatible POS terminal, and publish bank-transfer details for invoice-sized or repeat purchases. Accept cheques only if your staff can track clearing and dishonour. A printed or electronic receipt should identify the method and reference so the end-of-day reconciliation is possible.
For an online store
Use a gateway that combines cards and net banking, then add supported wallets only when your customers use them and the settlement terms make sense. Design the order system around explicit states: initiated, authorized or successful, settled, refunded and disputed. This prevents a delayed bank response from becoming a duplicate shipment.
For services and invoices
Place NEFT, RTGS and IMPS instructions on the invoice, with a unique reference and a contact channel for payment confirmation. Offer cards or a gateway-generated payment page when customers need a checkout rather than manual bank entry. Keep cheque acceptance as an option only when its clearing cycle fits your cash-flow expectations.

- One-time setup, terminal rental or integration charges.

- Settlement timing, holidays and cut-off conditions.
- Refund, reversal, failed-payment and dispute charges.
- Account, minimum-volume or inactivity conditions.
- Supported card networks, banks, wallets and transaction limits.
Evaluate the total operating cost as well: staff time for cash counting, deposit trips, cheque follow-up, unidentified transfers and manual settlement matching can exceed a visible transaction fee.
Security and failure handling
- Never rely on a customer screenshot alone: confirm the credit or approved terminal result through a trusted channel.
- Protect beneficiary details: publish them from a controlled business source and verify any requested change through a known contact.
- Separate authorization from settlement: a card or gateway success message may still require later settlement reconciliation.
- Keep an audit trail: retain invoices, receipts, transaction IDs, refund references and bank statements according to your accounting policy.
- Prepare an outage path: tell staff which alternative to offer when a terminal, gateway or bank channel is unavailable.
- Do not store sensitive card data: use the terminal or gateway’s approved flow and limit staff access to transaction references.
For any provider, ask how a failed, duplicated, reversed or disputed payment is identified and who owns the customer-support step. A method that appears fast at checkout can still require careful back-office work.
A decision checklist for a small business
- List each sales channel and the typical transaction value and frequency.
- Identify which customers lack UPI access or prefer cards, cash, cheques or bank transfers.
- Select a minimum fallback set: usually cash for in-person access, cards for card users, and at least one bank-transfer route for invoices.
- Ask the bank, acquirer or gateway for current fees, limits, settlement, refund, dispute and eligibility terms.
- Test a small live transaction and its refund before public launch.
- Document who verifies payments, ships or delivers orders, posts settlements and follows up exceptions.
- Review the mix periodically as customer behavior and provider conditions change.
The best alternative to UPI is rarely one replacement. It is a deliberately limited set of methods that covers your customers without creating more reconciliation and risk than your team can manage.
