What Parents Should Know Before Letting a Teen Use an AI Chatbot

Before your teen starts using an AI chatbot, talk about what they want it for, what they should keep private, how to check important answers, and when to turn to a person instead. Agree on boundaries together, review the specific service’s age guidance and controls, and make clear that a chatbot is not a therapist or crisis service.

Start by finding out what your teen wants from a chatbot

Ask what they use it for, what they find helpful, and what they would feel uncomfortable sharing. Some teens may choose a chatbot because it seems private or nonjudgmental. Respond with curiosity rather than an automatic ban: a teen who expects to be punished may be less likely to tell you about a troubling answer or interaction.

Companionship is part of the picture, not just homework or quick questions. Common Sense Media reports that three in four teens use AI chatbots for companionship, including simulated friendship or relationships, emotional support, and mental-health conversations. That is the organization’s reported figure, not a universal estimate; the page information available does not give enough methodological detail to treat it as representative of all teens. Read its guide to AI chatbots and mental-health support for its discussion of the topic.

Explain why a confident answer is not necessarily a good one

A chatbot can sound certain, warm, or emotionally attuned without having the judgment or understanding of a person. The American Psychological Association (APA) warns that teens may mistake programmed responses for real empathy. Clinical psychologist Mary Alvord, PhD, puts the distinction plainly: “But perceived safety isn’t the same as real safety.” These are expert cautions, not findings from a controlled experiment.

Help your teen pause before relying on consequential advice. Ask who is behind the answer, whether it applies to someone their age, and how they could verify it. For health or safety questions, the APA recommends checking with a parent, trusted adult, clinician, or mental-health professional before acting. The APA’s parent guidance on teens and AI offers more on evaluating chatbot advice.

Set privacy boundaries before sensitive conversations happen

Review the service’s privacy settings and current privacy documentation together. Agree that your teen should not enter unnecessary identifying details or highly sensitive information. Depending on the service, information may be collected, retained, used to improve the product, or shared under its policies. Do not tell your teen that a chatbot conversation is confidential in the way a conversation with a clinician may be.

UNICEF’s AI Policy Guidance, version 3, published in December 2025, treats children’s privacy and safety as important parts of child-centered AI policy. UNICEF says the guidance was informed by a twelve-country study with children and caregivers; that describes its evidence inputs, not a measured outcome. The wider point for families is to make privacy a deliberate conversation rather than assuming a chat is private because it feels private.

Agree on boundaries that protect sleep and real relationships

Make expectations together about when and where chatbot use is appropriate. Keep an eye on whether it is displacing sleep, time with friends, family connection, or offline activities. The aim is not to treat every use as harmful, but to notice when the tool is crowding out parts of life that matter. APA guidance emphasizes co-created boundaries and preserving human connection.

APA describes adolescence, ages 10–25, as a critical period of brain development. This is broad developmental framing, not evidence that chatbots have a specific effect on every adolescent. Use it as a reason to stay engaged and adjust boundaries as your teen’s needs and the tools change, not as a prediction about an individual child.

  • What minimum age does the service state, and does it offer a distinct teen experience or additional protections?
  • What data does it collect, retain, use to improve the service, or share, according to its current privacy documentation?
  • Can the teen or parent adjust sensitive-content settings, quiet hours, or study features?
  • What can a parent actually see, and what safety notifications are available?
  • Does the service explain that its answers can be wrong and that it is not a substitute for medical or mental-health care?

ChatGPT is one specific example, not a template for all services. OpenAI’s current ChatGPT for Teens documentation describes an optional linked parent account and selected settings, including study hours and quiet hours. OpenAI says linked parental controls do not let parents access a teen’s chats or real-time activity; see its parental-controls documentation. Check the provider’s latest information rather than assuming another chatbot has the same features or limits.

Make clear when a person—not a chatbot—needs to help

A chatbot should not be asked to manage a mental-health crisis. If your teen talks about self-harm, suicide, serious depression, or another crisis, listen and involve a qualified mental-health professional promptly. APA recommends seeking professional support immediately in these situations. Keep the conversation open enough that your teen knows they can tell you what happened, even if they used a chatbot first.

Keep the conversation ongoing

A first discussion is a starting point, not a permanent rulebook. Ask your teen what has been useful or uncomfortable, whether they have encountered an answer they did not trust, and whether their use has changed. Revisit privacy settings and family expectations as the service changes or your teen’s needs shift. Neither a parental-control feature nor a single conversation can ensure safety; practical guidance depends on the service and on staying involved.
