Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf your child’s school reports a data breach, first verify the notice through a known school or district phone number or website. Confirm whether your child was affected and exactly what information was exposed. Then change any exposed or reused passwords, protect sensitive identity and financial data, check whether your child has a credit file, and monitor for fraud. Keep every notice, contact name, date and case number; investigations can reveal additional affected data later.
1. Start with the official school or district notice
Do not rely on a forwarded message or an unsolicited email link. Use the school’s established website, a number from previous school communications, or the district office to confirm that the incident is genuine. The Federal Trade Commission’s breach guidance begins with the same practical advice: “First, take a deep breath. Then, visit identitytheft.gov/databreach.”

Confirm whether your child was included
Ask the school or district whether your child’s records were part of the affected systems. Request the incident date or date range, the investigation’s current status, and the contact channel for follow-up. Early investigations may not identify the full scope, so ask how the district will notify families if the findings change.

This documentation helps if you later need to challenge an account, prove that you acted promptly, or file a privacy complaint.
2. Match your response to the information exposed
Use the school’s confirmed data categories to prioritize your actions. If the investigation is incomplete, take the preventive steps that fit the most sensitive category identified so far and update your plan when the district provides more detail.

| Exposed information | Immediate action | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Passwords or login credentials | Change the affected password immediately, then change every other account that reused it. Use a different, complex password for each account. | Unexpected password-reset notices, logins, messages sent from the account, or changes to recovery details. |
| Social Security number, date of birth or other identity data | Ask each nationwide credit bureau to conduct a manual search for a file in your child’s name and consider a free credit freeze for a child under 16. | Credit inquiries, collection letters, bills, tax notices or new-account correspondence addressed to your child. |
| Bank, payment-card or other financial account data | Review transactions and contact the bank or card issuer’s fraud department. Ask whether the account should be closed, replaced or otherwise secured. | Small “test” charges, unfamiliar transfers, declined transactions or account-contact changes. |
| Health or insurance information | Review explanations of benefits and medical records. Contact the insurer or provider about any service, claim, prescription or record your family does not recognize. | Medical bills, claims or treatment records that do not belong to your child. |
| Names, addresses, grades or photographs only | Document the exposure and continue monitoring. Be especially cautious about messages that use school details to appear legitimate. | Targeted phishing, impersonation, harassment or requests for additional information. These details may not carry the same financial risk as a Social Security number or account credential. |
Secure credentials without spreading the breach
Change passwords through the account’s normal sign-in page, not through a link in an unexpected message. Start with any account that used the exposed password, then work through older accounts where you may have reused it. Do not use a new password on more than one service. If the school provides a password-reset process, confirm its instructions through the known school website or office.

A child may have no credit file, but an identity thief can try to create one using exposed identity numbers. The FTC advises parents or guardians to request a manual search for a child’s credit file when identity data may have been exposed. Contact Equifax, Experian and TransUnion separately; a request to one bureau does not cover the others.

Place a free freeze for a child under 16
A parent or guardian can request a free credit freeze for a child under 16 from each of the three nationwide bureaus. The freeze is designed to make it harder for someone to open new credit accounts using the child’s information. Each bureau has its own request process and may require documents proving your identity, your relationship to the child and the child’s identity. Use the bureau’s current official instructions and keep confirmation of every request.
A freeze blocks most prospective creditors from accessing the credit report until you lift it. It remains in place until you remove it, does not change a credit score, and does not prevent existing creditors or certain legally permitted parties from accessing information. If your child later needs legitimate credit, you will need to arrange a temporary lift or remove the freeze according to the bureau’s process.

Understand a freeze versus an extended fraud alert
| Protection | How it works | Duration and eligibility | Effect on credit score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit freeze | Blocks most access to the credit report until the freeze is lifted or removed, making new-account fraud more difficult. | Free. A parent or guardian can place one for a child under 16 through Equifax, Experian and TransUnion separately. It stays until removed. | Does not change the score. |
| Extended fraud alert | Asks lenders to take extra steps to verify identity before extending credit rather than blocking report access outright. | Free, lasts seven years, and requires an identity-theft report from the FTC or a police report. | The alert itself does not change the score. |
For a child who has only been exposed and shows no evidence of misuse, the child freeze is the preventive option described by the FTC. An extended fraud alert is a recovery measure for confirmed identity theft and requires the supporting report.
4. Monitor accounts and communications
Set a schedule that you can maintain rather than checking once and forgetting. Review bank and card activity, email sign-ins and recovery settings, and social-account activity. Look for unfamiliar transactions, password-reset messages, new contacts, posts or direct messages, and correspondence from lenders, collectors, insurers or medical providers.
Best Value
Keep the school’s website and mailed notices on your review list. A later update may identify a different data category, change the affected population or provide a deadline for a protective service. Treat unexpected calls or emails that mention the breach as potential phishing: do not disclose additional information until you independently verify the sender.
5. Act quickly if you find confirmed fraud
Evidence of misuse changes the response from prevention to recovery. Work through the following sequence and keep written proof.
- Contact the company involved. Call the fraud department of the bank, card issuer, lender, medical provider or other organization where the fraudulent account or transaction occurred. Explain that the account or activity is identity theft involving a minor.
- Request closure and written confirmation. Ask the company to close or block the fraudulent account, stop further transactions, and confirm in writing that your child is not liable for the debt or charges. Save letters, emails, reference numbers and the date the case was opened.
- Contact every credit bureau showing the problem. Ask the bureau to remove fraudulent accounts or inquiries from the child’s file. If you have not already done so, request a freeze for a child under 16 and retain the confirmation.
- Report the identity theft. File a report at IdentityTheft.gov and follow its recovery plan. The report creates a formal record that can support disputes with companies and bureaus.
- Continue monitoring. A single fraudulent account does not prove that every exposed detail has been misused. Continue reviewing statements and correspondence and add each new incident to your records.
6. Know when a school-privacy complaint may be appropriate
Identity-theft recovery and student-privacy enforcement are separate tracks. If the school or district cannot address your concerns and you believe your child’s education records were handled in a way that violated the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, review the U.S. Department of Education’s Student Privacy Policy Office complaint process.
Recommended Free Tools
The Department’s 2021 guide states that an eligible parent generally must file within 180 days of the alleged violation or of learning about it. Keep the school’s notices, your written questions, responses and evidence of the affected records. A FERPA complaint does not replace password changes, credit protection or fraud reports; pursue those actions separately when the data warrants them.
7. Avoid the mistakes that make recovery harder
- Waiting for a perfect incident report: Take the protective action supported by the data already confirmed, then adjust when the investigation updates its findings.
- Changing only the school password: If the same password was used elsewhere, change those accounts too and make every replacement unique.
- Freezing only one bureau: A child freeze must be requested from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion separately.
- Trusting breach-themed messages: Verify callers, texts and emails through a known school or company channel before sharing information or clicking a link.
- Discarding documentation: Keep notices, account statements, dispute letters, confirmation numbers and names of representatives until every issue is resolved.
- Assuming low-sensitivity records are harmless: Names, addresses, grades and photographs may not enable the same type of account fraud as a Social Security number, but they can make impersonation and targeted scams more convincing.
What to do today
Verify the incident with the school, identify the exact data involved, and subscribe to official updates. Change exposed or reused passwords, secure financial or health accounts when those categories were involved, and request a child credit-file search when identity data may have leaked. For a child under 16, request a free freeze from all three nationwide bureaus. If fraudulent activity appears, contact the organization’s fraud department, obtain written confirmation, dispute the records with the bureaus and report the theft at IdentityTheft.gov.
