Location sharing is handled separately through Family Sharing and Find My.
The short answer: visibility is different from surveillance
iPhone parental controls combine two functions. Screen Time reports selected patterns of use and lets an adult impose rules. Family Sharing can let the adult manage those settings from their own device. Neither is described by Apple as a complete, real-time record of everything a child sees, types, or does inside every app.

| Capability | What a parent can generally do | What Apple’s documented controls do not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Activity reports | See daily averages, commonly used apps or websites, pickups, notifications, and day or week views. | A live mirror of the child’s screen or a complete log of every in-app action. |
| App and web rules | Block or limit apps and websites, schedule Downtime, and set time limits. | Inspecting all content inside an otherwise allowed app. |
| Purchases and downloads | Require approval for eligible purchases or downloads with Ask to Buy. | Automatically seeing or reading every account transaction outside the configured controls. |
| Communications | Manage contacts and communication requests for Messages, FaceTime, and Phone. | A universal parent inbox containing every text, call, or conversation. |
| Sensitive imagery | Use Communication Safety checks in supported communication contexts. | Remote access to all photos, videos, or conversations. |
| Location | Use Family Sharing and Find My when location sharing is enabled. | Screen Time supplying location history or location automatically without sharing settings. |
What parents can see in Screen Time
Apple’s current child-safety activity guide describes a summary rather than a live feed. A parent can see the child’s average daily device use for the past week, the apps used most, device pickups, and notifications. Tapping an activity category reveals more detail, including day and week views.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Apple’s general Screen Time guidance similarly describes seeing how much time a child spends on the device and which apps or websites they use most. This is an aggregate activity summary. Treating it as a complete audit trail would overstate what the feature does.
What the report can reveal
- Average daily use over the reported period.
- Apps and websites with the highest usage.
- How many times the device was picked up.
- Notification activity.
- Additional day-by-day or week-by-week detail after opening an activity section.
What the report does not reveal
- The full text of every message or email.
- A continuous live view of the phone’s screen.
- Everything that happened inside an app simply because that app appears in the report.
- A guaranteed record of activity on devices or accounts outside the configured family setup.
What parents can control
Screen Time is primarily a boundary-setting system. When the child’s account is in the adult’s Family Sharing group, the adult can manage supported controls remotely. Apple also describes configuring Screen Time directly on the child’s iPhone or iPad in some circumstances.
Apps, websites, and schedules
- App and website access: restrict categories or individual apps and limit web access according to the available content settings.
- Downtime: schedule periods when only permitted apps and communications remain available.
- App Limits: assign daily limits to an app or category instead of banning it outright.
- Content restrictions: apply age- and category-based rules for supported media and features.
These settings control access. They do not turn every permitted app into an open book for the parent.

Purchases and downloads
Family Sharing can use Ask to Buy for eligible purchases or downloads. The child requests the transaction and the adult approves or declines it. This is an approval workflow, not a promise that a parent can inspect all activity within a downloaded app.

Communication permissions
Apple documents communication controls for Messages, FaceTime, and Phone. Depending on the child’s setup, an adult can manage contacts and require approval before the child connects with someone new. Those controls determine who may communicate and which requests need permission; they are not equivalent to reading every conversation.
Can parents read texts with Screen Time?
Not as a universal feature documented by Apple. Screen Time can report that a messaging app was used and can enforce communication rules, but Apple’s guidance does not say that a parent receives all message contents or can remotely browse every conversation.
Communication controls may restrict contacts, and an approval step can be required before a new person is added. That can reduce unwanted contact without exposing the complete contents of ordinary chats to the parent.
Communication Safety is a separate protection
Apple also documents Communication Safety, which can check for sexually explicit photos or videos in certain contexts, including Messages, AirDrop, and FaceTime. The feature is designed to provide a warning or safety intervention in supported situations. The documentation does not describe it as a parent dashboard containing every image or message.

Therefore, “the phone can detect a sensitive image in a supported context” and “the parent can read every conversation” are different claims. Only the first is supported by the described Communication Safety behavior.
Can parents see which apps a child uses?
Yes, Screen Time activity summaries can show the apps and websites used most and the amount of time associated with device activity. The report is useful for identifying broad patterns, such as unusually high use of a game, social app, or browser.
Seeing an app in a summary does not mean the parent can inspect every action taken inside it. For example, the report may show time spent in a messaging app without displaying the message text, participants, or attachments.

Can parents track a child’s location?
Location is handled through Family Sharing and Find My, not through Screen Time’s activity report. Family members can share locations and help locate one another’s missing devices when the relevant sharing and account settings allow it.

A parent therefore sees a location only when location sharing is enabled and the device, account, and permissions support it. Screen Time does not itself create a location history. Do not assume that an activity report showing phone use also tells the parent where the child was.
Requirements that change what is available
There is no single setup path that works identically for every family. Apple says availability and defaults can depend on the child’s age, country or region, account arrangement, device settings, and software version.
Software version
Apple’s current activity guide says the activity features it describes require version 27 or later across the relevant Apple devices, and that all devices in a Family Sharing group need to be updated to use those described features. A family on an earlier release may see different controls, labels, or defaults.
Age and region
Apple’s Family Sharing guidance says a Child Account is required for children under 13, with account-age rules varying by region. Apple’s setup information also describes certain settings being enabled by default for children under 18, while the applicable age can vary by country or region. Confirm the local rules rather than assuming that a control will appear—or be on—because it appears in an online guide for another country.

Family group structure
Family Sharing supports an organizer and up to five other family members, each using their own Apple Account. The group structure makes remote management possible for supported settings, but membership alone does not grant a parent access to all private content on a child’s phone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to set up monitoring and limits
- Check software first. Update the adult and child devices as needed. The current activity guide’s described features require version 27 or later on all devices in the Family Sharing group.
- Confirm the accounts. Make sure the child uses the intended Apple Account and is part of the adult’s Family Sharing group. If the child is under 13, check the regional Child Account requirement.
- Open Screen Time. On the adult device, use the Family Sharing controls to select the child and open Screen Time. If remote management is unavailable, configure Screen Time directly on the child’s device where Apple permits it.
- Review the activity summary. Look at the daily average, most-used apps or websites, pickups, and notifications. Open the day or week detail when you need a narrower time window.
- Set boundaries. Configure Downtime, App Limits, app or website restrictions, and content settings appropriate to the child’s age and circumstances.
- Configure purchases. Turn on Ask to Buy for eligible downloads or purchases if approval is required before the child obtains new content.
- Set communication rules. Review contact management and communication requests for Messages, FaceTime, and Phone. Enable Communication Safety where it is available and appropriate.
- Handle location separately. In Family Sharing and Find My, review location-sharing choices and device-finding permissions. Do not expect these settings to appear in the Screen Time activity report.
Common misunderstandings and fixes
“I cannot see the activity report.”
Check that the child is in the correct Family Sharing group, that the devices use the intended Apple Accounts, and that the devices meet the current software requirement. If the family is not using compatible version 27-or-later software on all relevant devices, the activity guide’s described features may not appear as documented.
“The report shows an app, so I should be able to read what happened there.”
The report identifies usage patterns, not the full contents of an app. Use App Limits, Downtime, content restrictions, or communication controls when the goal is to change access rather than inspect conversations.

“Location is missing from Screen Time.”
That is expected: location belongs to Family Sharing and Find My. Review location sharing and device settings in those services instead of looking for a location-history panel in Screen Time.
“A communication restriction did not block everything.”
Communication controls depend on the selected contacts, services, account setup, age, region, and software. Recheck the configured rules for Messages, FaceTime, and Phone, and verify that the child is using the managed account and device.
What a child should understand about these controls
Parents can see meaningful summaries and impose meaningful limits, so Screen Time is not invisible to the child. At the same time, Apple’s documented features do not amount to universal access to message contents, a live screen, or every in-app action. Explaining which categories are collected, which limits are active, and when location is shared gives the child a more accurate expectation of privacy than saying either “parents can see everything” or “parents can see nothing.”
The practical boundary is simple: Screen Time reports selected activity and manages access; communication controls manage contact permissions; Communication Safety addresses certain sensitive imagery; and Find My handles location sharing. Keeping those functions separate prevents both false reassurance and exaggerated claims about what an iPhone parental-control setup can reveal.
