It helps compare periods on a more like-for-like basis, but it is not a universal accounting measure: each company defines its own adjustments. Read it alongside reported revenue growth, business mix, profitability and cash flow.
What does organic growth mean in luxury retail?
Organic growth describes how revenue changed after a company applies the adjustments in its own definition. Those adjustments commonly remove the effects of foreign-exchange movements and changes in business scope, such as acquisitions or disposals. The aim is to make performance across periods easier to compare, rather than to report the amount of revenue that appeared in the published accounts.

The definition is issuer-specific, not a single standardized accounting formula. Kering calls its comparable growth organic growth and measures it at constant scope and exchange rates. L’Oréal’s SEC-filed definition also accounts for changes in certain license agreements where it operates as licensee. Check the definition for the particular company and reporting period before comparing rates. The word “organic” does not, by itself, tell you which adjustments a company made; the formal definition and reconciliation do.

It does not, by itself, remove price and product-mix changes, differences in demand, store openings, or every change in distribution. Those factors may still affect revenue unless the issuer’s stated method says otherwise. Nor should financial organic revenue growth be confused with organic search traffic or marketing attribution: those are different concepts and require separate definitions and evidence.

How do luxury companies calculate organic growth?
A useful conceptual description is: organic growth is the change in revenue between periods after applying the issuer’s stated currency and business-scope adjustments. The precise calculation depends on the issuer’s reconciliation; the concept is not a replacement for it. A rate is therefore meaningful only when read with the company’s rules about which entities and revenues are included and how foreign-currency figures are treated.
Kering’s comparable-growth method
Kering’s 2025 results define comparable, or organic, growth as a comparison at constant scope and exchange rates. Its method excludes current-period revenue from acquired entities and excludes prior-period revenue for entities divested or in the process of being divested. It also translates prior-period foreign revenue at current-period average exchange rates. These rules determine which revenue enters the comparison and how currency conversion is handled. Kering’s financial information provides company reporting; consult the relevant results release for the period-specific reconciliation.
L’Oréal’s definition
L’Oréal’s SEC-filed definition describes adjustments for foreign exchange, acquisitions and disposals, and changes in certain license agreements where it is the licensee. That additional scope consideration is a reminder that two companies’ “organic” rates need not be calculated on identical terms. L’Oréal filings on the SEC’s website contain its formal reporting definitions.

A practical reading sequence
- Find the period-specific definition. Use the company’s results release or filing for the exact quarter, half-year or full year. Note the stated currency, acquisition, disposal and other scope adjustments. Do not assume the wording or method is unchanged from a previous report.
- Write down reported revenue and reported growth. These describe the published revenue movement and give the context for the adjusted rate. Keep the revenue amount and its percentage change distinct from the organic percentage.
- Record organic or comparable growth separately. Keep the issuer’s terminology and adjustment rules attached to the percentage. If the release provides a reconciliation or separate currency and scope effects, read it rather than guessing what explains the difference.
- Check period and base-period treatment. Confirm the comparison is for the same duration and whether the prior-period figures have been restated or treated differently under the company’s method. A quarter, half-year and full year are not interchangeable.
- Read the breakdowns. Look at business groups, regions and channels, then consider profit, margin and cash flow before judging the quality of growth. A group total does not mean every brand, market or channel grew at the same rate.
How is organic growth different from reported revenue growth?
Reported growth compares revenue as published for two periods. Organic growth adjusts that comparison for the effects the issuer specifies, generally currency and changes in business scope. The two measures answer related but different questions: reported growth shows the movement in reported revenue, while organic growth seeks a like-for-like view under the company’s rules.
The gap between the rates can be informative. It reflects the combined effect of the adjustments made under the issuer’s definition; it should not be attributed to one factor, such as currency, unless the company separately discloses that breakdown. Neither measure alone explains which products, regions or channels drove the change. Keep both in view: organic growth does not replace published revenue, and reported growth does not isolate the comparison the company defines as organic.
What recent luxury-company results illustrate
The figures below are for different periods and companies, so they are examples of how the measures are presented—not a direct performance ranking. The periods, businesses and measures differ, so the percentages should not be lined up as though they came from a like-for-like contest.

| Company and period | Revenue measure | Additional context |
|---|---|---|
| LVMH, first half of 2026 | Revenue of €38.6 billion; organic revenue growth of 3% | Profit from recurring operations was €8.7 billion, operating margin was 22.5%, and free cash flow was €4.1 billion for the half-year. These are distinct measures that help assess the financial outcomes alongside adjusted revenue growth. LVMH results and press releases |
| Kering, full year 2025 | Revenue of €14,675 million, compared with €16,874 million in 2024; reported decrease of 13% | Kering’s key figures separately identify sales from physical and online stores controlled by the House. Revenue growth and the performance of a particular retail channel are different questions. Kering key figures |
| LVMH, first quarter of 2026 | Selective Retailing recorded 4% organic growth | The release described differences across markets: resilient local demand partly offset lower tourist spending in Europe and Japan. A group or business-group percentage needs that regional context. LVMH results and press releases |
The LVMH half-year figures show why organic revenue growth should not stand in for a complete financial assessment: growth, operating profit, margin and cash flow measure different parts of performance. The 3% rate describes adjusted revenue change for that period; the €8.7 billion profit from recurring operations and 22.5% margin add information about profitability, while €4.1 billion of free cash flow adds a cash-flow measure. None is a substitute for the others.

Its 13% reported decrease is a change in consolidated revenue as presented, while the separate identification of physical and online stores controlled by the House describes a particular channel. LVMH’s Selective Retailing result demonstrates that a business-group rate can sit alongside different demand patterns by market: resilient local demand partly offset lower tourist spending in Europe and Japan. The context helps explain why an aggregate percentage cannot describe every part of a retailer’s business.
What should you compare with a luxury brand’s organic growth rate?
- Definition and adjustments: Check which currency, acquisition, disposal and other scope effects are removed. Note special rules such as license-agreement changes. The label alone does not establish that two issuers used the same approach.
- Period and base: Make sure the figures cover comparable periods and determine whether the base period was restated or adjusted. Do not compare a quarter’s rate directly with a full-year rate as if the timeframes were equal.
- Reported versus organic growth: Compare both rates, but do not assign the difference to a specific cause without a disclosed breakdown. Together they show published revenue movement and the issuer’s adjusted comparison.
- Business mix: Examine the contribution or performance of houses, product categories and business groups where the company reports them. An overall result can conceal different results among its components.
- Channel and geography: Use disclosed information on directly operated retail, e-commerce, wholesale, local demand and tourist spending to understand the context. These are not interchangeable measures; channel and regional detail can clarify what the group-level figure leaves out.
- Quality of growth: Read operating profit or margin and free cash flow alongside revenue growth. Revenue expansion does not establish that the growth is profitable or cash-generative.
Does organic growth mean same-store sales?
No. Organic growth is an issuer-defined revenue comparison with specified adjustments, often for currency and business scope. Same-store sales is a distinct retail measure tied to a defined group of comparable stores. Do not use the terms interchangeably unless the company explicitly defines its reported metric that way. Organic growth is not necessarily limited to a fixed store base, and a company’s stated adjustments—not the label—determine what is included.

Why the definition matters when comparing luxury companies
A like-for-like label can make results sound directly comparable, but companies may remove different effects or apply different base-period rules. One issuer may account for a scope item that another does not, and the length of the reporting period matters as well. A quarter, half-year and full year should not be treated as equivalent comparisons. Kering’s treatment of acquired and divested entities and its exchange-rate translation method, alongside L’Oréal’s additional license-agreement adjustment, show why reading the details matters.
Organic growth also does not reveal the whole commercial picture. A percentage can conceal differences among business groups, locations and retail channels. Even when the revenue comparison is favorable, operating margin and cash flow help show whether that growth translated into stronger financial outcomes. The most defensible reading keeps the company’s definition, period, reported revenue and supporting breakdowns together.
Common interpretation mistakes
- Treating “organic” as a universal formula: The adjustments are set by each issuer, so read the company’s definition for the period.
- Calling it same-store sales: Organic growth may include revenue from stores opened during the period and is not inherently a comparable-store measure.
- Assuming it excludes every business change: It removes only the effects specified by the company; distribution changes, price and mix may remain in the figure.
- Using it as a profitability verdict: Revenue growth does not state the profit margin or cash generated. Consider those measures separately.
- Comparing percentages without their timeframes or composition: A quarterly rate and a full-year rate cover different periods; group-level totals can also mask regional or channel differences.
- Explaining the reported-organic gap without evidence: Unless the issuer breaks out the effects, the difference reflects the combined adjustments rather than a proven single cause.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does organic growth mean in luxury retail?
It is an issuer-defined comparison of revenue between periods after specified adjustments, usually for currency movements and changes in business scope such as acquisitions or disposals. Check the company’s own definition for the period.
Best Value
How do luxury brands calculate organic growth?
There is no single formula used by every issuer. Companies apply the currency and scope adjustments in their stated method and may include additional rules. For example, Kering describes comparable growth at constant scope and exchange rates, while L’Oréal’s definition also accounts for certain license-agreement changes.
How is organic growth different from reported revenue growth?
Reported growth reflects the change in published revenue. Organic growth adjusts the comparison for effects specified by the issuer. The difference between the rates should not be attributed to currency or another single factor unless the company discloses that breakdown.
Does organic growth mean same-store sales?
No. Same-store sales is a distinct retail measure based on a defined group of comparable stores. Organic growth is an issuer-defined revenue measure and is not automatically limited to that store base.
What should I compare with a luxury brand’s organic growth rate?
Compare it with reported revenue growth, the company’s definition and adjustment rules, the period and base, and available business-group, channel and regional breakdowns. Also check operating profit or margin and free cash flow, since revenue growth alone does not show whether growth is profitable or cash-generative.
The Bottom Line
Organic growth is useful as a like-for-like revenue comparison, not as a universal formula or complete verdict on performance. Check each issuer’s adjustments and reporting period, keep the rate beside reported revenue growth, and use disclosed business, channel and regional detail plus profit, margin and cash flow to understand what the result does—and does not—show.
