For a first Persona game, start with Persona 3 Reload, Persona 4 Golden, or Persona 5 Royal. You do not need to finish Persona 1 or Persona 2 first. Choose among these modern editions by tone, presentation, and platform access. If you want the entire core series, play Persona, Persona 2: Innocent Sin, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, Persona 3, Persona 4, then Persona 5—using Reload, Golden, and Royal as the modern editions. The one essential dependency is that Innocent Sin must come before Eternal Punishment.

The best starting point for most players

The modern numbered games are designed as practical entry points. Their casts, locations, and central conflicts are largely self-contained, so beginning with the newest game does not spoil a requirement to understand an older one. The choice is primarily about atmosphere and how you want the series to look and play.

Starting game Story and tone Modern version Availability information Best for
Persona 3 Reload Darker, more dramatic story built around a supernatural threat and a student team Modern reimagining of Persona 3 Atlus lists PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Steam versions Players who want the most contemporary presentation of Persona 3
Persona 4 Golden Rural mystery with a comparatively lighter social atmosphere Expanded edition of Persona 4 Platform availability varies by edition and region; check the current store listing Players who prefer an investigative mystery and an ensemble-focused beginning
Persona 5 Royal Stylish urban adventure centered on the Phantom Thieves Expanded edition of Persona 5 Officially listed for Xbox, Windows, Steam, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch; single-player RPG released October 21, 2022 Players who want the most immediately modern style and presentation

Each is a substantial single-player role-playing game. No comparable official playtime figure is established for these editions, and completion time changes significantly with difficulty, optional activities, and how much social content you pursue.

How to choose between Persona 3 Reload, 4 Golden, and 5 Royal

Choose Persona 3 Reload for a darker modern reintroduction

Reload is Atlus’s modern reimagining of Persona 3, described on its official page as “a captivating reimagining of the genre-defining RPG, reborn for the modern era.” It is the clearest choice when you want Persona 3’s story with current-generation presentation rather than the older versions’ interfaces and visual approach. Start here if a serious tone and a newly rebuilt release matter more to you than following release order.

#1 Best Overall
Persona 5 Royal (PlayStation PS5)

Choose Persona 4 Golden for a rural mystery

Golden is the expanded edition to use when beginning Persona 4. Its small-town setting and investigation-driven premise provide a more relaxed entry than Persona 3’s darker setup, while still using the series’ calendar, dungeon, relationship, and Persona systems. Choose it when you want the cast and mystery of Inaba before moving to either of the more urban-feeling games.

Choose Persona 5 Royal for the most accessible modern style

Royal is the expanded edition of Persona 5 and the version to select instead of the original Persona 5. It follows the Phantom Thieves in a highly stylized city setting. The official listing identifies it as a single-player RPG released on October 21, 2022, with Xbox, Windows, Steam, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch versions. Start here if this is the version available on your hardware or if its contemporary visual design is the strongest draw.

Do you need Persona 1 and Persona 2 before Persona 3?

No. Most newcomers can begin with any of the three modern numbered games without playing Persona 1 or Persona 2. The modern entries share broad ideas and occasional references, but they are not a single uninterrupted storyline that requires every earlier chapter.

The early games do have a more direct relationship with one another. Persona 1 belongs before the Persona 2 duology in a complete-series run, and Persona 2: Innocent Sin must be played before Persona 2: Eternal Punishment. That ordering matters because Eternal Punishment follows the events and characters established in Innocent Sin. Skipping directly from Persona 1 to Eternal Punishment removes important context.

Complete core-series order

If your goal is to experience the mainline history in sequence, use this order:

  1. Persona (often called Persona 1; the English release was titled Revelations: Persona)
  2. Persona 2: Innocent Sin
  3. Persona 2: Eternal Punishment
  4. Persona 3 — use Persona 3 Reload for the modern version, or Persona 3 Portable if you specifically want its alternate presentation
  5. Persona 4 — use Persona 4 Golden
  6. Persona 5 — use Persona 5 Royal

What this order gives you

This sequence preserves the strongest story continuity in the early era, then moves through the numbered modern games in release-era order. It also lets you see how the series’ systems and presentation developed without forcing a first-time player to begin with an older interface.

Rank #3
Persona 5 Tactica (PlayStation PS5)
  • Gather a team of popular heroes to face the armies of oppressors in exciting turn-based battles
  • Lead a riot of hearts in a brand new story that plays in the legendary Persona universe
  • Beat your enemies with powerful personas, a selection of weapons and defeat them in style!
  • In addition to the game, the first edition includes a DLC code for 2 Persona games ("Orpheus Picaro" & "Izanagi Picaro") in the box

What this order does not require

You do not need to own both Reload and Portable. Portable is an alternative version of Persona 3 with its own presentation; it is useful if that specific format appeals to you, not as a mandatory companion to Reload. Likewise, Golden and Royal are the expanded editions to choose for Persona 4 and Persona 5, so there is no reason for a new player to buy the base releases first.

Recommended routes for different kinds of players

Shortest modern route

Play Persona 5 Royal, then Persona 4 Golden, then Persona 3 Reload. Reverse the first two if you would rather begin with a lighter rural mystery before moving into Persona 5’s larger urban style. This route uses the current expanded editions and avoids the older games until you know whether you want them.

Release-style core route

Play Persona, Persona 2: Innocent Sin, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, Persona 3 Reload, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royal. It follows the core sequence while substituting modern editions where they are the clearest versions to obtain.

One-game test

Start with whichever of Reload, Golden, or Royal is legally available on your platform at the best current price. This is a sensible approach because the modern numbered games do not require a prescribed entry order. Retail prices, stock, regional editions, and future release timing change, so verify the store page for your country before purchasing.

Where the spin-offs fit

Spin-offs are easiest to understand after you know the main cast they use. Treat the following as placement guidance rather than a single universal chronology: official catalogue pages distinguish the numbered RPGs from related titles, but do not provide a complete canonical timeline for every crossover.

Spin-off Play after Format or reason for that placement
Persona 4 Arena Persona 3 and Persona 4 Fighting game crossover that draws on both casts
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax Persona 3 and Persona 4 Follow-up to Arena using the same combined cast
Persona 4 Dancing All Night Persona 4 Rhythm-focused side story best understood after the original group’s arc
Persona 5 Strikers Persona 5 Royal (or Persona 5) Action-RPG continuation featuring the Phantom Thieves
Persona 5 Tactica Persona 5 Royal (or Persona 5) Strategy-RPG spin-off using the Persona 5 cast
Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth Persona 3 and Persona 4 Crossover dungeon RPG whose appeal depends on recognizing both groups
Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 5 Larger crossover involving all three modern casts
Persona 3 Dancing in Moonlight Persona 3 Optional fan-service rhythm game; character context comes first
Persona 5 Dancing in Starlight Persona 5 Optional fan-service rhythm game; play after meeting the Phantom Thieves

Why Strikers and Tactica come after Persona 5

Both games assume you recognize the Phantom Thieves. Strikers continues that group in an action-RPG format, while Tactica reinterprets them in a strategy-RPG. They are not substitutes for Royal’s main story and are easier to follow once the original relationships and conflicts are familiar.

Why Q and Q2 should wait

The Q games are crossover adventures rather than introductions to their casts. Playing Q before Persona 3 and Persona 4, or Q2 before Persona 5, turns character reunions and references into unexplained appearances. Save them until the relevant numbered games are complete.

A practical installation and purchase checklist

  1. Pick your starting tone. Select Reload for a darker reimagining, Golden for a rural mystery, or Royal for the Phantom Thieves’ urban adventure.
  2. Confirm your platform and region. For Royal, check the current listing among Xbox, Windows, Steam, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. For Reload, verify the current PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or Steam listing available to you. Golden’s edition and regional availability should likewise be checked before purchase.
  3. Choose the expanded edition. Golden is the Persona 4 version, Royal is the Persona 5 version, and Reload is the modern Persona 3 version. Do not buy an older base release merely to establish play order.
  4. Decide whether you are committing to the early games. Add Persona and the two Persona 2 games only if you want the historical route or are interested in their more direct early continuity.
  5. Add spin-offs after their parent games. Install Arena, Q, Dancing, Strikers, or Tactica only after the prerequisite cast has been introduced.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Starting with Eternal Punishment: it is the second half of the Persona 2 story; play Innocent Sin first.
  • Assuming Persona 1 is mandatory: it is part of the complete route, but not a prerequisite for beginning Persona 3, 4, or 5.
  • Buying every Persona 3 release: Reload and Portable are alternatives, and Portable is only necessary if you prefer its specific presentation.
  • Playing crossover games too early: Q, Q2, and Arena rely on recognition of multiple casts.
  • Treating spin-offs as the main sequence: Strikers and Tactica expand Persona 5, while the Dancing titles are optional fan-service experiences.

Bottom line

There is no single required first game. Begin with Persona 3 Reload, Persona 4 Golden, or Persona 5 Royal according to tone and platform, then move through the other modern numbered games in whichever order keeps you interested. For the full core history, use Persona 1, Innocent Sin, Eternal Punishment, Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 5 in that order, with Innocent Sin before Eternal Punishment as the critical dependency. Put every spin-off after the numbered game that introduces its cast, and reserve crossover titles for after you know all of their participating characters.
