They do not, by themselves, reveal whether traders are collectively bullish or bearish, identify who initiated a trade, explain the strategy behind it, or reliably forecast the underlying stock’s next move.
Start with what an options contract represents
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) defines an option as a contract whose owner has the right to buy or sell an underlying asset at a fixed price on or before a specified future date. A listed stock option can trade among institutions, professional traders and individuals. That mix matters: the same contract may be used for speculation, income, hedging, portfolio insurance or as one leg of a larger position.

Because every listed contract has a buyer and a seller, an activity statistic describes the contract and its trading—not a single, unified opinion about the stock. A large print can be economically important to one participant and merely offsetting risk for another.

Volume measures contracts traded during a particular session. Open interest (OI) measures contracts that remain open after clearing, exercise and assignment have been processed. OI is therefore a cumulative outstanding-contract count, while volume resets as a new session’s activity begins.

| Measure | What it counts | What it can suggest | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Session volume | Contracts that changed hands during the selected trading session | How active that series was that day and where trading was concentrated | Whether trades opened or closed positions, the traders’ motives, or a net bullish/bearish view |
| Open interest | Contracts still open after clearing, exercise and assignment | How many contracts remain outstanding in a specific call or put series | Net directional sentiment, trader identity, strategy or the ease of getting a fair execution |
| Bid-ask spread and displayed size | The current quoted price range and contracts visibly available at each side | How readily an order may be entered or exited at a fair price | Why other traders established their positions or where the stock must move |
The Options Clearing Corporation (OCC) calculates open interest from consolidated exchange trade reports and incorporates exercised options that result in assignment. That processing is why OI can change after a trading session rather than moving one-for-one with every trade print.
“Is increased open interest bullish?”
No. The Options Industry Council (OIC) states in its General Information FAQ: “Open interest only reflects the total number of open (long or short) option contracts for a given option series that have not yet been closed out. This indicates neither a bullish nor bearish outlook.”
One newly opened contract simultaneously represents one long position and one short position. If a trader buys to open and another sells to open, OI rises by one contract, but the statistic does not say which side has the better information or whether either side expects a rise. A seller may be writing a covered call, financing a spread or hedging another exposure; a buyer may be speculating or protecting an existing holding.

How opening and closing combinations change OI
| Buyer’s instruction | Seller’s instruction | Effect on open interest | Interpretation limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buy to open | Sell to open | Increases by one contract | Shows a new long and a new short, not a net market view |
| Buy to close | Sell to close | Decreases by one contract | Shows positions being removed; it does not reveal why they are being removed |
| Buy to open | Sell to close | Usually remains unchanged | A new long replaces an existing short; the print alone does not identify either trader’s broader position |
| Buy to close | Sell to open | Usually remains unchanged | An existing long is transferred to a new short; the contract count hides the change in ownership and intent |
In real-time data, an opening or closing designation may be unavailable, delayed or ambiguous. Without that information, a volume spike cannot be translated into a reliable conclusion about whether positions were added or reduced.
Why call volume is not automatically bullish and put volume is not automatically bearish
A call gives its owner the right to buy the underlying at the strike price; a put gives its owner the right to sell. Those rights do not dictate how a trader uses them. A call can be bought for upside exposure, sold against shares to generate income, purchased as part of a spread or used to hedge a short position. A put can express a bearish view, protect a long holding, form part of a volatility trade or be sold by someone willing to buy the stock at the strike.
Consequently, “heavy call volume” identifies active call trading, not a verified wave of bullish buying. “Heavy put volume” identifies active put trading, not proof that traders expect a collapse. The contract’s strike, expiration, price paid, opening or closing status and relationship to other legs are all needed before a directional interpretation is even plausible.

A disciplined way to investigate an unusual print
Use the following sequence when a scanner or tape highlights activity. It is a method for describing evidence, not a scoring system or a trading signal.

- Name the exact contract. Record the underlying, call or put, strike and expiration. Two options on the same stock can have completely different risks and purposes when their strikes or expirations differ.
- Record the observation period. Note the session date and the time of the print. Compare the volume with that series’ open interest, rather than with the stock’s share volume or with an unrelated option.
- Compare volume with OI carefully. Volume larger than existing OI can indicate substantial turnover or newly created positions, but it does not prove that every trade opened. A large OI number indicates many contracts remain outstanding, not that they are all held by one side.
- Check whether opening or closing status is known. If the data does not establish whether each side opened or closed, say so explicitly. Do not convert an uncertain trade classification into a claim about accumulation or liquidation.
- Inspect the bid, ask and displayed size. A print near the bid may have different implications for execution than one near the ask, but quote location is not a complete strategy decoder. Record the spread and the displayed quantity at the time observed.
- Look for linked legs. A spread, collar, conversion, calendar trade or hedge can make one leg appear bullish or bearish when the combined position is neutral or has a different risk. A single-contract feed generally cannot reveal the trader’s entire package.
- Place the option beside the underlying. Check the stock’s price, realized movement and any scheduled event without assuming the option caused the move. The option activity may be a response to the stock, a hedge for another asset or a repositioning unrelated to a forecast.
- State only what the evidence supports. A defensible conclusion might be “trading was concentrated in the September 50 call, with a wide spread and unknown opening status.” It is not “informed traders are bullish” unless independent evidence establishes that claim.
Activity is not the same as liquidity
The OIC describes liquidity as the ease of entering or exiting at a fair price. Tight bid-ask spreads and meaningful displayed size are practical indicators. Volume and OI can show that a series trades frequently or has many outstanding contracts, but neither guarantees that your order can be filled quickly without moving the market.
| Observation | What it tells you about execution | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Tight spread | The quoted buy and sell prices are relatively close, reducing the immediate spread cost if displayed size is sufficient | Assuming the spread will remain tight during a news release or fast market |
| Displayed bid and offer size | Shows how many contracts are visibly available at the quoted prices at that moment | Treating displayed size as a guarantee; quotes can change or disappear |
| High volume | Confirms recent trading activity | Assuming every active series is easy to trade at a fair price |
| High open interest | Shows many contracts remain open | Using OI as a substitute for a current bid, ask or execution estimate |
The OIC notes that OI is unlikely to affect execution as much as the bid or ask side. Market orders can be especially risky during extreme volatility, including around the market open or close, when quotes may widen and displayed size can change rapidly. A limit order controls the maximum price you will pay or minimum price you will accept, but it does not guarantee a fill.

A hypothetical example: what you can and cannot conclude
Suppose a hypothetical stock’s 60-strike call expiring in three months trades 12,000 contracts in one session while its prior OI is 8,000. The activity is worth investigating because volume is large relative to the series’ outstanding contracts. You can accurately report the contract, the session volume and the reference OI.
You cannot conclude from those figures alone that 12,000 new bullish positions were created. Some trades may have closed existing positions; others may have been matched against new shorts; and several may have been legs of spreads. If the call traded across a wide spread, the series may also be less liquid than its volume suggests. The appropriate next step is to examine opening/closing information, quote conditions and related strikes before drawing any inference.

How much options activity is occurring overall?
Market-wide activity provides scale, not a stock-specific forecast. Cboe Global Markets reported an average of 72.8 million options contracts per day in the second quarter of 2026, more than 19% above the year-earlier period, in an update dated July 21, 2026. That figure covers the market as a whole; it does not indicate the direction of any individual stock or contract.
Best Value
A high-volume market can contain bullish, bearish, market-neutral and hedging transactions at the same time. Use aggregate figures to understand participation, not to infer a universal sentiment signal.
Tools that expose activity without explaining motive
Analytics pages can make the raw information easier to inspect. Cboe’s Trade Alert service lists unusual-volume conditions, trade details and open interest among its analytics. Such a tool can help you locate a contract and review its context; it does not verify who traded, whether a transaction was informed, or what the underlying stock will do.
For definitions and risk details, the SEC’s An Introduction to Options – Investor Bulletin, the OIC General Information and Trade Entry & Execution FAQs, and the OIC explanation of open interest are appropriate educational references. The SEC also directs readers to the OCC publication Characteristics and Risks of Standardized Options.
Risk before acting on an activity signal
Options activity is evidence about participation, not a recommendation to copy a trade. The SEC warns that an option holder can lose the entire premium paid if the option expires out of the money. Some option writers can face unlimited potential losses. Spreads and hedges can limit particular risks, but they also introduce additional legs, costs and execution dependencies.
Before placing an order, identify the maximum possible loss, expiration date, assignment and exercise implications, and the effect of changing volatility and time value. Never rely on a volume spike or OI increase as a substitute for understanding the position you would actually hold.
Investor checklist
- Have I identified the underlying, call or put, strike and expiration?
- Am I separating session volume from cumulative open interest?
- Do I know whether the observed trade opened or closed positions?
- Could the print be one leg of a spread, hedge or other multi-leg strategy?
- What are the bid-ask spread and displayed sizes right now?
- Am I mistaking active trading for liquidity or a directional forecast?
- Could I lose the entire premium, or face substantial or potentially unlimited losses as a writer?
When those questions cannot be answered, the responsible description is limited: the contract attracted attention and participation. Anything beyond that requires evidence the activity statistic does not provide on its own.
