OpenAI’s reported annualized revenue is a pace, not a completed-year result. The latest figure, about $50 billion, was reported by Axios on October 8, 2026, and is not presented in the cited coverage as audited annual revenue. It does not by itself reveal profit, cash generation, cash runway, or whether the same sales pace will continue. The earlier $70 billion figure was reportedly grossed up to make a comparison with Anthropic’s different treatment of some cloud-partner sales, so the two figures are not directly comparable without understanding the accounting basis.
What “annualized revenue” means
Annualized revenue takes revenue generated during a shorter period and expresses that pace as if it continued for a full year. A simple example is a business that records $4 billion in one quarter: multiplying that quarter by four produces an $16 billion annualized pace. The calculation describes the current run rate; it does not prove that the company will record $16 billion during its fiscal year.

The period used, the transactions included, and the treatment of partners determine what the number actually communicates. A figure based on one unusually large month can be volatile. A figure based on a broader trailing period may be steadier. Unless the company publishes a precise methodology, readers should not assume that “annualized revenue,” “revenue run rate,” and “ARR” are interchangeable.
Annualized revenue versus recognized revenue
Recognized revenue is recorded under the company’s accounting rules when goods or services are delivered and the applicable revenue-recognition conditions are met. It appears in a financial statement for a defined reporting period, such as a quarter or a completed fiscal year. Annualized revenue is an extrapolation from a recent pace and can include activity that has not yet occurred in the rest of the year.

That distinction matters for a fast-growing artificial-intelligence company. New contracts, usage spikes, price changes, capacity constraints, cancellations, or a shift between products can make a current pace differ substantially from the eventual reported total.
Annualized revenue versus ARR
ARR usually means annual recurring revenue: a company’s estimate of the recurring subscription or usage business expected over the next 12 months from a particular point in time. Definitions vary. Some companies include committed contracts, some use the latest recurring usage, and some exclude one-time or professional-services revenue. “Annualized revenue” can be broader, because it may annualize all revenue in a recent period rather than only recurring components.
OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar’s company-authored account uses the label ARR for OpenAI’s sequence of $2 billion in 2023, $6 billion in 2024, and more than $20 billion in 2025. Those are OpenAI-reported ARR figures, not a standardized industry measurement that can automatically be compared with every other company’s ARR.

The sequence shows extraordinary growth in the company’s own reported metric, but it is not a substitute for a full income statement. OpenAI says revenue grew threefold year over year and tenfold from 2023 to 2025. Those growth rates describe the company’s account of its performance and should be attributed to OpenAI.
Why the figure changed from $70 billion to about $50 billion
Axios reported on October 8, 2026, that OpenAI’s annualized revenue was near $50 billion, roughly $20 billion below the $70 billion figure reported in September. The report attributed the difference to how cloud-partner sales were counted. It said the $70 billion number had been grossed up to make comparison with Anthropic more direct.
Gross and net presentation
In Axios’s explanation, Anthropic’s method counts a customer’s full payment through a cloud provider as top-line revenue and records the cloud provider’s share as an expense. OpenAI, by contrast, records its share for certain partner transactions. The exact treatment depends on the company’s role and responsibilities in each transaction; this is not a claim about every partner sale.

Suppose a customer pays $100 through a cloud marketplace and the cloud provider retains $30. A gross presentation could show $100 of revenue and $30 of related expense. A net presentation could show only the company’s $70 share as revenue. The economics of the transaction may be similar while the reported top-line figure differs. The example illustrates the mechanics; it is not a reconstruction of OpenAI’s contracts.

A gross-up changes the measurement basis, not necessarily the underlying customer demand or cash economics. Comparing $70 billion on one basis with $50 billion on another can produce a misleading ranking. The accounting difference alone does not establish which business is stronger, more profitable, or growing faster. A meaningful comparison must put both companies on the same basis and use the same date and measurement window.
What the $50 billion pace can tell you
- It indicates that, under the reported measurement approach, recent sales activity annualizes to roughly $50 billion.
- It signals substantial commercial scale relative to OpenAI’s earlier company-reported ARR milestones.
- It provides a reference point for discussing growth, capacity planning, and market position when the date and accounting basis are stated.
- It can help analysts build scenarios, provided they treat it as an input that may change rather than as a guaranteed year-end result.
OpenAI’s CFO also reported compute capacity of 0.2 gigawatts in 2023, 0.6 gigawatts in 2024, and about 1.9 gigawatts in 2025. OpenAI says revenue growth tracked compute growth: compute rose threefold year over year and 9.5 times from 2023 to 2025. The company says more compute would have produced faster customer adoption and monetization. That is OpenAI’s interpretation, not independent proof that additional capacity will always create proportional revenue or that the growth is profitable.

What the figure does not tell you
It is not completed fiscal-year revenue
Only a financial statement for a completed reporting period can show the revenue recognized during that period. A run rate can rise or fall before year-end and may include a temporary usage surge, a large contract, or a favorable billing mix. Without the underlying period and calculation, a reader cannot convert the $50 billion pace into a precise annual total.
It is not profit
Revenue is the top line. Profit requires subtracting costs such as compute, data-center capacity, personnel, research, sales, depreciation, financing, and taxes. AI services can generate large sales while carrying substantial infrastructure and development costs. Nothing in the reported annualized figure establishes gross margin, operating income, net income, or a break-even date.
It is not free cash flow or cash runway
Cash collected can differ from revenue recognized because of billing terms, prepaid contracts, receivables, capital spending, and working-capital changes. A company can report a high revenue pace and still consume cash if it is investing heavily in servers, facilities, and research. The cited material does not provide a complete OpenAI cash-flow statement or a cash-runway calculation.
It is not a forecast of future growth
Annualizing today’s pace assumes enough continuity for the calculation to be useful. It does not account automatically for competition, customer churn, price reductions, regulation, supply limits, model releases, or changing usage patterns. Sam Altman’s November 6, 2025 statement that OpenAI expected to end that year above a $20 billion annualized run rate and grow to hundreds of billions by 2030 was a forecast at that date. It should not be rewritten as a verified 2030 outcome.
Why ARR definitions require caution
A public-company SEC filing from Nutanix warns that ARR should not be treated as GAAP revenue or as a GAAP revenue forecast. It also notes that ARR may not be adjusted for possible customer changes and lacks a standardized meaning across companies. That filing describes Nutanix’s metric, not OpenAI’s, but it illustrates the central issue: the label alone is insufficient.
Before comparing ARR or annualized revenue, ask four questions:

- What date and window? Is the number based on a month, quarter, trailing period, or point-in-time contract book?
- What revenue is included? Does it cover recurring subscriptions, usage, one-time services, or all reported sales?
- Is the presentation gross or net? Are cloud marketplaces, resellers, and other partners shown at the customer’s full payment or only the company’s share?
- What evidence supports it? Is it in audited financial statements, a regulatory filing, a company announcement, an investor briefing, or journalism based on information shared with investors?
How to compare OpenAI’s number with another company

Applying those checks prevents a common error: treating the largest-looking number as proof of the largest business. A lower net figure can represent similar underlying activity to a higher gross figure, and a point-in-time run rate can exceed or fall short of recognized revenue over the following year.
A practical way to read future OpenAI revenue headlines
- Record the date and exact wording. “About $50 billion annualized revenue” is different from “$50 billion revenue in fiscal 2026.”
- Identify the source and attribution. Note whether the statement comes from OpenAI, an executive, a filing, or a news report citing investor information.
- Classify the metric. Mark it as ARR, annualized sales, recognized revenue, or forecast before comparing it with another figure.
- Check partner accounting. Look for gross-versus-net treatment of cloud marketplaces and resellers.
- Separate scale from economics. Seek margin, operating-cost, capital-spending, and cash-flow data before drawing conclusions about financial health.
- Track the same basis over time. A change in methodology can look like acceleration or decline even when customer activity has not changed by the same amount.
The bottom line for readers and investors
OpenAI’s latest reported annualized revenue near $50 billion is best understood as a time-specific pace estimate. It is meaningful evidence of scale and momentum when paired with its date, source, and accounting basis. It is not a completed-year revenue figure, a profit measure, a cash-flow statement, or a promise that the pace will persist.
The move from the previously reported $70 billion figure is explained in Axios’s October 8 account as a change in comparability: the earlier figure was grossed up to align more closely with Anthropic’s treatment of certain cloud-partner sales, while OpenAI records its share for those transactions. Read the two numbers as differently constructed measurements unless both are recalculated on the same basis.
