What OLED Monitor Pixel Shifting and Panel Refresh Do—and When to Use Them

Keep pixel shifting enabled. It periodically moves the picture by a few pixels so a taskbar, game HUD, logo or other fixed element does not continually stress exactly the same OLED pixels. Pixel refresh and panel refresh are different maintenance routines: pixel refresh adjusts individual pixels, while panel refresh is a more intensive whole-screen correction. Let automatic cycles finish, run a manual pixel refresh only after a prompt or temporary retention, and reserve a full panel refresh for clearly visible retention or unevenness and only as often as your monitor manual allows.

What pixel shifting does on an OLED monitor

Pixel shifting (also called pixel shift, screen shift, pixel orbiting or image shifting) is a preventative function. At intervals, the monitor moves the entire displayed image by a small amount and then changes the direction or position over time. The content is still visible, but the same physical pixels are less likely to reproduce a static edge continuously.

That matters because OLED pixels emit their own light and can wear unevenly when a bright, unchanging element remains in one place. Desktop taskbars, channel logos, scoreboards, subtitles and game interfaces are typical examples. Pixel shifting spreads the load across neighboring pixels instead of allowing one exact row or block to age faster.

The movement is usually subtle enough that you will not notice it during normal use. It does not clean the panel, increase brightness or repair an already damaged pixel. It is a background prevention feature that operates while you are using the display. Sony describes the purpose as “gradually changing the position in which the image is displayed,” while Dell describes the same class of function as moving the image to help prevent image retention and prolong panel life.

  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadows for added depth and more realistic scenes

For ordinary use, leave the option enabled. Sony’s OLED panel-settings guidance says to use the option enabled under normal circumstances. Disable it only when your specific model’s manual gives a reason, such as a specialized workflow that cannot tolerate the small change in image position.

Pixel refresh and panel refresh are not the same thing

Manufacturers use overlapping names, so read the explanation in your model’s manual rather than relying on the menu label alone. The practical distinction is scope and intensity.

Function What it changes Typical purpose How often to use it
Pixel shift Moves the displayed image by small amounts during use Prevents one location from carrying a static element continuously Leave enabled as a background safeguard
Pixel refresh Adjusts individual pixels to reduce uneven wear Maintenance after extended use, a prompt, or temporary retention Allow automatic cycles; start manually when the manual or an on-screen prompt calls for it
Panel refresh Adjusts the entire screen More intensive correction for noticeable retention or unevenness Infrequent and model-specific; use only when needed

Sony’s monitor guide defines pixel refresh as adjusting each pixel to reduce uneven wear and panel refresh as adjusting the entire screen for the same goal. A panel refresh therefore is not simply a longer version of pixel shifting. It is a maintenance operation that can keep the display unavailable for substantially longer and should not be started casually.

The same operation may appear under another name: Samsung uses Screen Optimization and Pixel Refresh in different care menus; LG uses Image Cleaning; Acer uses Image Retention Refresh; other models may say Screen Optimization or Panel Protect. Treat the manufacturer’s description, not the marketing name, as authoritative.

When to use each OLED-care function

Leave pixel shift enabled

Pixel shift is designed to run continuously in the background. It addresses the cause of uneven stress—static content—before a visible mark appears. Turning it off removes that preventive layer and offers no benefit for normal desktop, video or gaming use. If you notice the picture move by a pixel or two, that is expected behavior.

Let an automatic short refresh finish

Many displays accumulate operating time and begin a maintenance cycle when you enter standby or switch the monitor off. Samsung documents Screen Optimization after extended cumulative use and warns users not to disconnect power during the process. Philips documents Pixel Refresh beginning after the monitor has been off or in standby for at least 15 minutes on its QD-OLED care guidance (2025).

When the monitor asks to perform maintenance, select the option that lets it proceed, then leave the power connected. Do not assume that a blank screen means the monitor has stopped. A cycle can disable normal controls, show a white line or display another diagnostic pattern while it works.

Run a manual pixel refresh for a prompt or temporary retention

Use the shorter pixel-level routine when the monitor recommends it or when a faint mark remains after ordinary content has changed. Samsung exposes Pixel Refresh in Panel Care on some models. LG directs owners who see lines or marks to run Image Cleaning, and Acer provides Image Retention Refresh for observed retention.

This is corrective maintenance, not a cleaning ritual to repeat every day. Running it repeatedly without a symptom adds unnecessary wear and downtime. First give the monitor time to complete any automatic cycle; if the mark persists, follow the model-specific manual procedure once.

Reserve full panel refresh for noticeable problems

A full panel refresh is appropriate when retention or unevenness is clearly visible and the shorter routine has not resolved it, or when the manufacturer specifically instructs you to use it. Sony’s OLED guidance says to perform panel refresh manually only when image retention is particularly noticeable and gives once a year as a reference. The SDM-27Q102 monitor guide is stricter: “Avoid performing a panel refresh 2 or more times a year, as this can damage the panel.” That is a Sony model-specific limit, not a universal schedule; another manufacturer may specify a different interval.

How long do the cycles take?

Timing varies by panel, firmware and the routine selected. The following published figures illustrate why you should plan around your own manual rather than a universal timer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Source and routine Published behavior What to plan for
Sony SDM-27Q102 help guide (accessed 2026) Pixel refresh: about five minutes; panel refresh: about one minute Remain connected to power until the monitor returns to normal
Samsung US support (accessed 2026) Some models keep the display powered off for more than one hour during Pixel Refresh Start it when a long interruption will not matter
Philips QD-OLED care guide (2025) Pixel Refresh may start after at least 15 minutes in standby or power-off Do not cut power just because the screen is dark

A visible white line, a dark screen or temporarily unavailable inputs can be normal maintenance indications. If the manual says a cycle is running, wait for its stated maximum time before treating it as a fault.

Safe procedure for a manual refresh

Before starting

  • Save work and stop playback or a game; the display may be unavailable while the routine runs.
  • Connect the monitor directly to reliable power. Do not use a switched outlet or power strip that may turn off automatically.
  • Check the current model manual for the exact menu name, duration and frequency limit.
  • Confirm that the problem is temporary retention or unevenness, not a permanently damaged area or a signal problem.

Start a pixel-level routine

  1. Open the monitor’s on-screen display.
  2. Go to the panel-care, OLED-care or maintenance section. Examples include Samsung’s Panel Care, LG’s Image Cleaning and Acer’s Image Retention Refresh.
  3. Select the pixel refresh option and accept the warning. If the display offers a choice between a short pixel routine and a full panel routine, choose the shorter one for a prompt or faint temporary mark.
  4. Leave the monitor connected and untouched until it reports completion or returns to standby.
  5. Display varied content afterward and check whether the mark has disappeared. Do not immediately launch another cycle if the result is unchanged; consult the model’s troubleshooting guidance.

Start a full panel routine

  1. Use the panel-refresh command only when retention or unevenness is particularly noticeable and the manual permits it.
  2. Start it at a time when the monitor can remain idle for the complete interval.
  3. Do not unplug, move, or repeatedly press buttons during the cycle.
  4. Record the date if your manual specifies a maximum number of panel refreshes per year. This prevents accidental overuse.

Does pixel refresh fix burn-in?

Not reliably. The phrase “burn-in” is often used for two different conditions. Temporary image retention is a short-lived afterimage caused by recent content or uneven charge behavior; a pixel refresh or image-cleaning routine may reduce it. Permanent burn-in is lasting, uneven OLED wear. A maintenance cycle can sometimes make mild nonuniformity less noticeable, but it cannot restore pixels that have permanently aged.

Pixel shift is even less likely to reverse an existing mark because it is preventative: it changes where new content is drawn rather than recalibrating the panel. If a logo or interface outline remains after varied content, a complete automatic cycle and the model-approved manual pixel refresh are reasonable first steps. If the mark remains after those steps, stop repeating refreshes and use the manufacturer’s service or warranty process. A persistent mark can also come from a source image, cable, graphics setting or software overlay rather than the panel itself, so verify the symptom with the monitor’s own menu or a different input before diagnosing burn-in.

A practical decision framework

What you observe Recommended action What to avoid
No mark; normal everyday use Keep pixel shift enabled and allow automatic maintenance in standby Starting manual refreshes “just in case”
A monitor prompt for pixel refresh Accept it when convenient and let it complete with power connected Unplugging because the screen is blank
Faint temporary retention after static content Use the model’s manual pixel refresh or image-cleaning routine once Running the routine repeatedly in quick succession
Clearly visible retention or unevenness that persists Use a full panel refresh only if the manual recommends it and within its stated limit Scheduling frequent panel refreshes
Mark remains after approved maintenance Check another input and the monitor menu, then contact manufacturer service Assuming every persistent mark can be repaired by another cycle

Why manufacturer instructions differ

There is no cross-brand, universal service interval. OLED panels, firmware and the amount of compensation performed by each routine differ. Sony’s SDM-27Q102 guide provides unusually specific times and warns against two or more panel refreshes per year. Samsung documents models that can remain powered off for more than an hour during Pixel Refresh. Philips specifies a 15-minute standby or power-off condition before a cycle may begin. Those statements are all valid within their documented products, but none should be copied as a rule for every OLED monitor.

Menu labels can also hide different operations. “Screen Optimization” may be an automatic cumulative-use cycle, while “Pixel Refresh” in another menu may be a user-started routine. Read the explanatory text shown beside the command and note whether it refers to individual pixels or the entire screen.

Troubleshooting interruptions and unexpected behavior

The monitor will not start a refresh

Some models permit a cycle only after a minimum standby period or cumulative operating time. Put the monitor in standby, keep it powered, and wait the interval specified by the manual. If the option is unavailable while the panel is warm or actively displaying content, that can be an intentional safeguard.

The screen stays black longer than expected

Use the model’s published maximum as your threshold. Samsung says some displays remain off for more than an hour during Pixel Refresh, so a long blank period is not automatically a failure. Do not disconnect power during that documented window.

A line or pattern appears during the routine

Maintenance patterns, including a white line, can be normal. Wait for completion and then check the panel with ordinary content. A line that remains after the cycle and appears in the monitor’s own on-screen display is a different problem from a line present only in one computer input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You interrupted a cycle

Reconnect stable power and follow the manufacturer’s recovery instructions. Do not immediately launch multiple additional cycles. If the display does not return to normal or the manual provides no recovery step, contact the manufacturer rather than guessing.

You are tempted to refresh frequently

Resist that impulse. Pixel refresh is maintenance for a prompt or symptom; panel refresh is more intensive and, on the Sony SDM-27Q102, performing it two or more times a year can damage the panel. A schedule copied from another model can therefore do more harm than good.

Bottom line for daily use

Use pixel shift as an always-on prevention feature. Treat pixel refresh as a short, model-defined maintenance operation that you allow to run automatically or start when prompted or when temporary retention is visible. Treat panel refresh as an infrequent, whole-screen intervention for noticeable unevenness, bounded by the exact instructions for your monitor. Keeping power connected and following the model manual matters more than memorizing any brand’s timing.
