What Older and Younger Generations Expect From Financial Technology

Older and younger customers increasingly expect the same baseline from financial technology: banking that is fast, understandable and secure. The differences are more visible in the tasks and situations they choose. Adults 50 and older commonly use digital tools for balances, bill payments and transfers, while branches, familiar staff and human help remain important for some transactions or difficult decisions. Younger adults are not proven to be a single, uniform “digital-first” generation either; the best evidence compares broad age bands, not Gen Z, millennials or Gen X as fixed personality types.

For a bank or fintech provider, the practical answer is not to choose between an app and a branch. Offer a clear digital path for routine work, dependable human assistance when confidence or complexity drops, strong protection against fraud and exploitation, and accessible ways for an authorized caregiver to help.

What the evidence can—and cannot—say about generations

The most useful U.S. evidence compares age bands such as 18–49 with 50-plus, or adults 25-plus with a 50-plus subgroup. Those categories do not map neatly onto named generations, and they cannot prove that age itself caused a preference. A person’s income, health, disability, digital experience, trust in an institution, location and the task at hand can all shape the channel they choose.

The figures below come from separate surveys and should not be combined into one population. AARP Research’s nationally representative 2023 fintech survey covered 1,630 U.S. adults age 25 and older, including 990 adults 50-plus; its findings were reported in 2025. A separate age-friendly banking survey of adults 18 and older was conducted in 2023 and reported in 2024. A 2025 online survey of 3,838 U.S. adults ran from September 9 to October 6, 2025. Finally, AARP interviewed 42 adults age 50-plus about interactive teller machines in October 2025. These are survey and interview findings, not controlled experiments, and they should not be generalized worldwide.

Do older people actually use mobile and online banking?

Yes. Older adults are active users of financial technology, especially for routine tasks. In the 2023 AARP survey, seven in 10 adults 50-plus said they used fintech. Among that group, the most common activities were checking a bank balance, paying bills and moving money between accounts.

Activity Adults 50-plus reporting use Survey qualification
Checking bank balances 77% AARP nationally representative U.S. survey fielded in 2023; reported in 2025
Paying bills 62% Same survey and age group
Transferring money between accounts 61% Same survey and age group
Investing in securities through financial technology 13% Same survey and age group
Applying for a loan online or in an app Fewer than 10% Same survey and age group

The gap between routine and high-stakes tasks matters. A customer may be perfectly comfortable viewing a balance on a phone but prefer a person when borrowing money or making an investment. Treating “uses mobile banking” as one yes-or-no behavior hides that distinction.

A separate AARP survey conducted September 9–October 6, 2025, found that 63% of adults 50-plus used financial digital services. Among those users, 96% used an online bank. The same survey found that 91% of adults 50-plus owned a smartphone. Smartphone ownership makes mobile access plausible, but it does not establish that every phone, app or interface is suitable for banking, nor does it make a new device a requirement.

What do younger customers expect from fintech?

There is no single, current data set in this evidence base that directly compares Gen Z, millennials, Gen X and older generations across the same financial products. No named individual quote establishes what a whole younger generation wants. It would therefore be misleading to say that all younger customers trust fintech apps more, never visit branches or reject human assistance.

What can be said is more practical. AARP’s summary of interactive-teller-machine interviews says, “Convenience, defined as banking that is fast and easy to access, is a top priority across age groups.” Younger and older users can therefore share a demand for speed and low friction while differing in when they want reassurance, explanation or a human handoff.

For younger users, a well-designed service should make common actions quick, show fees and consequences before confirmation, and support the phones and authentication methods they already use. Those are product requirements rather than claims that every younger person behaves alike. The same requirements help older users who are confident online, while optional human support serves people who need more context.

Why task complexity changes the preferred channel

Digital adoption often follows the risk and ambiguity of the task. A balance check is reversible and familiar. An investment, loan, beneficiary change or suspected fraud incident can have consequences that are harder to undo. The service should make that difference visible instead of forcing every action through one channel.

Routine, repeatable work

  • Show balances, recent transactions and available funds in plain language.
  • Make bill payment and transfers predictable, with the recipient, date and total displayed before submission.
  • Provide confirmations that can be saved or printed, plus an easy way to find them later.
  • Use consistent labels across the website, mobile app, statements and any staff-assisted flow.

High-consequence or unfamiliar work

  • Explain interest, fees, tax implications, transfer limits and cancellation rules before a customer commits.
  • Offer a visible call, secure-message or branch option without making the customer restart the process.
  • Use a short checklist or guided review for loans, investments, new payees and large transfers.
  • Give customers time to pause and provide a clear path to report suspected fraud.

This graduated approach accommodates a customer who is digitally capable for everyday banking but wants a trusted person for a complex decision. It also avoids making younger customers prove they need help or older customers prove they can use an app.

Is a bank branch still important?

Yes, particularly for older customers and for situations where trust, explanation or social connection matters. In AARP’s 2023 age-friendly banking study, adults 50-plus were 85% more likely than adults ages 18–49 to use a physical bank or credit union for activities such as deposits or withdrawals, check cashing and checking balances.

Reason for visiting a branch Adults 50-plus Adults 18–49 Source and fielding note
Interact with a teller or banker they knew 26% 13% AARP age-friendly banking survey conducted in 2023; reported in 2024
Social engagement 24% 7% Same survey and age bands

These results do not mean every older adult prefers face-to-face banking, or that younger adults never value a branch. They show that a familiar employee and the social function of a branch can be meaningful for a larger share of the 50-plus group in this survey. Closing every physical or assisted channel in pursuit of digital efficiency can therefore remove a service that some customers use precisely when money feels most consequential.

How trust, privacy and security affect adoption

Security concerns are not an abstract objection to technology; they are part of the product experience. In the 2023 AARP fintech survey, half of adults 50-plus worried about security and inappropriate use of personal information. Fifty-one percent cited being hacked as a concern, and 49% cited malware.

A trustworthy service should make protective measures understandable rather than presenting a wall of technical language. Tell customers why a login challenge appeared, what information a bank will never request by text or phone, and how to freeze an account or dispute a transaction. Use alerts for new payees, unusual transfers and password changes, while allowing customers to configure delivery through channels they can reliably access.

Fraud controls also need a careful balance. A block that prevents an authorized caregiver from paying a bill can be as damaging as a missed warning. Let customers define trusted contacts, review permissions and see a plain-language history of account access. When a transaction is held, explain the next step and provide a human escalation route.

Four age-friendly principles that apply to digital products

AARP Public Policy Institute identifies four principles for age-friendly banking:

  1. Preventing financial exploitation. Detect unusual activity, make reporting straightforward and train staff to respond without blaming the customer.
  2. Helping those with dementia. Support clear routines, readable records, appropriate consent and safeguards that do not unnecessarily remove a person’s autonomy.
  3. Empowering financial caregivers. Provide controlled, auditable ways for an authorized person to help with bills or monitoring without sharing a password.
  4. Making the banking environment easier to access. Apply accessibility to branches, websites, apps, telephone support and documents—not only to a single interface.

These principles are relevant across age groups. A younger customer recovering from illness may need a caregiver workflow; an older customer may want fully independent digital control. Designing for the situation rather than the customer’s birth year produces fewer bad assumptions.

How to compare a banking app, website, branch and assisted service

Use the same criteria for every channel. A fast app is not a good option if a customer cannot understand a warning, recover an account or obtain help. The following framework turns broad expectations into checks a product team or customer can actually apply.

Best Value

Criterion Questions to ask
Convenience and speed Can a customer complete a routine task in a few steps, and can they see its status afterward?
Clarity and ease of use Are labels, fees, dates and consequences understandable without specialist knowledge?
Privacy and security confidence Does the service explain authentication, data use, alerts and recovery in language customers can act on?
Human support Can a customer reach a trained person without repeating the entire problem?
Accessibility Does it work with larger text, screen readers, keyboard navigation, captions, hearing assistance and language support where offered?
Fraud and exploitation protection Can customers set limits, add trusted contacts, report fraud and review account access?
Caregiving and shared management Are permissions specific, revocable and visible, with an audit trail instead of password sharing?

What interactive teller interviews add to the picture

In October 2025, AARP interviewed 42 adults age 50-plus about interactive teller machines. The themes were connection, convenience and security. An interactive machine can extend access beyond normal teller hours or locations, but it should not be treated as a substitute for every form of human help. Customers need to know whether they are speaking with a live employee, what the machine can and cannot do, and how private the conversation and documents will be.

The broader lesson is channel choice. “Digital” can include a self-service app, a staffed video interaction, an accessible website or an assisted machine. A bank that measures success only by reducing teller contact may miss whether customers feel safe and understood.

Designing one service for different confidence levels

For customers who want maximum speed

  • Offer biometric or passkey sign-in where supported, with a clear fallback for account recovery.
  • Keep repeat payments and transfers quick but show the final recipient and amount before approval.
  • Provide real-time status and searchable confirmations.

For customers who want explanation

  • Use progressive disclosure: a short summary first, with plain-language details and definitions available.
  • Mark irreversible actions and cooling-off or cancellation windows.
  • Provide phone, secure chat, video or branch assistance from the same screen or case number.

For customers managing money with another person

  • Use role-based access, such as view-only, bill-pay or full authority, rather than shared credentials.
  • Notify the account owner when permissions change or a large transaction occurs.
  • Make revocation and emergency contact options easy to find.

Testing should include people with different levels of vision, hearing, dexterity, language proficiency and financial confidence. Age is one variable; it is not a substitute for observing the actual task.

A practical checklist for choosing or improving fintech

  1. List the tasks customers perform most often and the tasks with the greatest financial consequences.
  2. For each task, offer a fast digital route and a clearly marked assisted route.
  3. Check every fee, limit, deadline and fraud warning for plain-language comprehension.
  4. Test account recovery, a disputed transaction, a new payee and caregiver authorization—not just a successful login.
  5. Measure completion, abandonment, error rates, support handoffs and fraud reports by task and channel.
  6. Review whether branch, telephone and accessibility services remain available to people who cannot or do not want to use an app.

The bottom line for banks and fintech providers

The strongest conclusion from the available U.S. evidence is not that one generation is digital and another is not. Adults 50-plus widely use online financial services for everyday needs, yet many still value branches and familiar employees. Convenience matters across age groups, while privacy, security, accessibility and human support determine whether convenience feels safe.

Build an integrated choice of channels: make routine digital banking simple, make complex decisions explainable, protect customers from fraud and exploitation, and preserve respectful human help. That combination serves younger customers who want control and speed, older customers who may want reassurance or a familiar face, and everyone whose needs change over time.
