GM’s 6.6L L8T gasoline V8 takes dexos1-approved SAE 5W-30. In Silverado HD 2500/3500 applications, GM’s 2026 capacity chart specifies 7.6 liters (8.0 U.S. quarts) with a filter and lists the PF63 oil filter (GM part 12707246). Use the oil-life monitor as the timing guide, but change the oil and filter at least once every 12 months. Your exact model-year owner’s manual controls if you have an Express, Low Cab Forward, or another L8T application.

The same L8T oil specification appears in GM’s chart for Express and Low Cab Forward vehicles. Those applications can have different service instructions, so confirm the engine code, model year, drivetrain and body before buying parts.

Which oil should you put in the 6.6L L8T?
Use the approval and viscosity together
The required combination is dexos1-approved SAE 5W-30. “5W-30” describes the viscosity grade; the dexos1 approval is GM’s performance requirement. A bottle that merely says 5W-30 but does not carry the required approval is not an equivalent choice under the specification.
Do not substitute a capacity estimate for the manual
For Silverado HD 2500 and 3500 L8T applications, the 2026 GM chart gives 7.6 L, or 8.0 U.S. quarts, with the oil filter. Treat that as a fill target, not a command to pour the entire amount in without checking the dipstick. Drain the old oil, install the filter, add most of the specified amount, allow the oil to settle, and bring the level to the marked range. Overfilling can be as problematic as underfilling.

When to change L8T oil and filter
Normal-use schedule
The 2025 Silverado HD owner manual instructs owners to check oil level and the oil-life percentage every 7,500 miles (12,000 km). Change the oil and filter when the oil-life display calls for service, and change both at least once a year even if the display has not requested it.
If the truck displays CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON, the manual says to address it within the next 600 miles (1,000 km). The oil-life display must be reset after every oil change. These are GM owner-manual requirements, not an independent laboratory test interval.
Why the monitor is not a permanent exemption
The oil-life system estimates when service is due from vehicle operating conditions. It does not cancel the annual requirement. A truck that accumulates few miles, idles frequently, or sits for long periods still needs an oil-and-filter change at least every 12 months under the Silverado HD schedule.

Severe service
GM identifies public-service, military and commercial vehicles as severe-use cases and gives ambulances, police cars and emergency-rescue vehicles as examples. If your L8T works in one of those roles, use the severe-service section of the exact model-year manual instead of automatically applying the normal 7,500-mile checkpoint. The severe schedule can call for more frequent maintenance.
How to perform an L8T oil service
- Verify parts and oil. Confirm dexos1-approved SAE 5W-30, a PF63/GM 12707246 filter, the correct drain-plug sealing hardware if your manual specifies replacement, and sufficient capacity for an 8.0-quart fill.
- Prepare safely. Park on a level surface, apply the parking brake, allow the engine and exhaust to cool enough to work safely, and support the truck according to the owner manual if you must raise it. Never work under a vehicle held only by a jack.
- Drain the old oil. Position a container, remove the drain plug, and allow the oil to drain fully. Reinstall the plug using the model-specific procedure and tightening specification in your manual; no universal torque value for every L8T application is published.
- Replace the filter. Remove the old filter, make sure its sealing gasket came off with it, lightly coat the new gasket with clean oil, and install the PF63 according to the filter and vehicle instructions. Do not stack a new gasket on the old one.
- Refill gradually. Add oil toward the 7.6-L (8.0-U.S.-qt) specification, then wait briefly and check the dipstick on level ground. Adjust to the indicated range rather than assuming the full chart amount is appropriate after an incomplete drain.
- Check for leaks. Run the engine briefly, inspect the filter and drain-plug area, shut the engine off, wait for oil to settle, and recheck the level. Correct any leak before driving.
- Reset the oil-life system. Use the oil-life reset path specified in your model-year manual. A completed oil change without a reset leaves the maintenance estimate inaccurate.
- Record the service. Note the date, mileage, oil approval and viscosity, filter part number, and any severe-use conditions. This helps the next service and exposes a missed annual interval.
Engine air-filter replacement
Part and monitor
The 2024 Silverado HD parts table lists GM 84121219, sold as ACDelco A3244C, for the engine air filter. Because air-box designs and part numbers can change by year or configuration, compare the part with the vehicle’s exact fitment before installation.
Where equipped, the engine air-filter life monitor determines when replacement is due. Replace the filter when the truck displays REPLACE AT NEXT OIL CHANGE or REPLACE ENGINE AIR FILTER SOON, then reset the monitor using the owner-manual procedure. Do not reset it merely because the housing was opened for inspection; reset it after installing a replacement filter.

Conditions that can shorten filter life
Dusty roads, construction work, gravel operation and long periods in dirty air can load an element faster than ordinary highway driving. The monitor and the exact manual remain the authority; visual inspection alone does not establish a replacement interval.

Passenger-compartment (cabin) filter interval
GM lists cabin filter 13508023, sold as ACDelco CF185, for the documented Silverado HD application. The scheduled replacement point is 22,500 miles (36,000 km) or 24 months, whichever comes first.
Replace it sooner when dusty roads, traffic pollution, seasonal allergens, reduced airflow, window fogging or odors indicate that the filter is loaded or contaminated. The time limit still applies to a low-mileage truck; waiting for a warning light is not the documented schedule.

The best service location is the one that can meet the same technical requirements. Price alone does not prove that the correct service was performed.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Buying by engine name only: L8T parts can vary by model year and vehicle application. Confirm the VIN or fitment listing before ordering.
- Using an unapproved 5W-30: The viscosity grade alone does not establish dexos1 compliance.
- Pouring in the full capacity without checking: The 8.0-quart figure includes a filter and is an approximate fill target; verify the dipstick.
- Waiting for the monitor forever: The oil and filter still require annual replacement.
- Ignoring the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message: GM specifies action within 600 miles (1,000 km).
- Resetting the monitor without changing oil: Reset only after completing the service, or the next reminder will be misleading.
- Applying normal intervals to severe duty: Public-service, military, commercial and emergency vehicles need the severe-service guidance in their own manual.
- Forgetting the cabin filter: Its 22,500-mile/24-month schedule is separate from the engine air-filter monitor.
A practical record-keeping checklist
- Vehicle model year, model, VIN or confirmed engine code
- Current mileage and service date
- Dexos1-approved SAE 5W-30 brand and quantity used
- Oil filter part number and installation date
- Oil-life reset completed
- Engine air-filter monitor status and replacement part, if changed
- Cabin-filter replacement date
- Four-wheel-drive transfer-case service status
- Severe-use classification and the interval selected from the manual
Keeping these details together prevents a common failure: a truck receiving the right oil but the wrong filter, missed reset, or an interval that ignores its duty cycle.
