What NVIDIA, Broadcom, and Microsoft’s AI Chips Are Used For

NVIDIA, Broadcom, and Microsoft all work on AI silicon, but they address different layers of the market. NVIDIA offers a broad GPU and data-center platform for training models, running inference, and other accelerated-computing jobs. Broadcom describes a portfolio of custom AI accelerators, high-speed networking for AI clusters, and edge-inference technology. Microsoft builds Maia chips for its Azure cloud, with Maia 200 focused on production inference and Maia 300 announced as a later inference-first generation.

These are not interchangeable products or a simple performance league table. The useful question is which workload a chip serves, how much memory and networking the system has, what software supports it, and whether the hardware is available through a cloud service or only inside an operator’s own data centers.

What an AI chip actually does

An AI chip is a processor designed to perform the mathematical operations used by machine-learning models efficiently. Neural networks repeatedly multiply large arrays of numbers, add the results, and move those values between compute units and memory. Specialized processors accelerate those operations far more efficiently than a general-purpose CPU for many AI workloads.

The term covers more than one design. A GPU is a highly parallel processor that can run many calculations at once and is programmable for different models. A custom accelerator is designed around a narrower set of operations or a particular system objective, such as serving a company’s own inference fleet at lower cost or power. Both can be called AI chips, but their software, memory architecture, and best workloads may differ substantially.

A chip is also only one component of an AI system. High-bandwidth memory stores model weights and intermediate data; networking links multiple accelerators; software compilers and libraries map model operations onto the hardware; and power delivery and cooling determine whether the system can run continuously. A fast processor in a poorly balanced system can be limited by memory capacity, data movement, or network congestion.

  • Training: adjusting model parameters with large data sets, often across many accelerators for hours or weeks.
  • Inference: running a trained model to produce a prediction, generated response, image, recommendation, or other output.
  • Fine-tuning and distillation: adapting an existing model or creating a smaller one, with requirements between full training and inference.
  • General accelerated computing: scientific computing, analytics, rendering, video processing, and other parallel workloads that can use the same hardware.

Training and inference are different jobs

Training needs scale and data movement

During training, the system processes batches of examples, calculates errors, updates model weights, and periodically saves checkpoints. Frontier models distribute this work across many accelerators. The important constraints include total compute, memory for weights and activations, fast links between chips, storage throughput, and the ability to recover from a failed job. Microsoft’s workload guidance treats training and inference as separate decisions rather than assuming that a chip optimized for one is automatically ideal for the other. Microsoft’s compute-path guidance and the Azure AI infrastructure overview list training, fine-tuning, distillation, and inference as distinct tasks.

Inference is about serving users efficiently

Inference begins after a model has been trained. A service may need to answer thousands of requests at once, keep response latency low, or process long prompts and large documents. Operators therefore measure response time, throughput, memory use, and cost per request. Some inference jobs are “prefill”-heavy, processing a long input prompt, while others are “decode”-heavy, generating output tokens one at a time. A chip with excellent training throughput may not deliver the best economics for either case.

What NVIDIA chips are used for

NVIDIA presents its data-center GPUs as a broad platform rather than a single-purpose processor. Its AI training platform materials describe use in training frontier models and running inference. Its data-center product portfolio also associates different systems with generative and agentic AI, reasoning, data processing, high-performance computing, analytics, scientific computing, visual computing, rendering, and video.

Those categories describe a family of products and systems, not a promise that every NVIDIA GPU is equally suited to every task. A large training cluster may be configured differently from a server intended for real-time inference or a workstation used for visualization. The common feature is programmability: the same broad GPU ecosystem can be adapted to many models and non-AI parallel workloads through supported software libraries and frameworks.

Model training and fine-tuning

Large language, vision, speech, and multimodal models use GPUs to perform matrix operations in parallel. Multiple GPUs can be connected within a server and across servers so that a model or training data can be divided among them. Memory capacity and the speed of the links between GPUs often matter as much as the arithmetic rate, because a training step repeatedly exchanges activations and gradients.

Inference and generative applications

Once a model is trained, NVIDIA GPUs can serve chatbots, image generators, recommendation systems, search features, and other applications. The appropriate configuration depends on model size, numerical precision, batch size, and latency target. An inference server handling many simultaneous requests may favor throughput, while an interactive assistant may prioritize fast first-token and token-generation times.

Scientific and visual workloads

NVIDIA’s product descriptions also cover simulations, data analytics, rendering, video, and other accelerated-computing uses. These jobs are not automatically AI workloads, but they can share the same parallel hardware and data-center infrastructure. That breadth is why NVIDIA is often described as selling a platform of GPUs, networking, systems, and software rather than just an individual chip.

How users access NVIDIA accelerators

Organizations can install GPU servers in their own data centers or rent instances from cloud providers. NVIDIA’s cloud-computing page illustrates training and inference in cloud infrastructure and gives a Perplexity deployment on AWS GPU instances as a vendor-presented example. It demonstrates the access model, not an independent benchmark or guarantee of a particular application’s performance.

What Broadcom’s AI silicon is used for

Broadcom describes AI at the portfolio level. Its AI solutions page identifies three broad areas: custom accelerators, networking and connectivity for AI infrastructure, and edge AI.

Custom accelerators for large operators

A custom accelerator is built around a customer’s model mix, software stack, power envelope, or serving economics. Compared with a general GPU, a tailored design can omit features the customer does not need and devote more silicon and memory bandwidth to the operations it uses most. This approach is attractive to companies operating very large, predictable fleets, where an improvement in performance per watt or cost per request can justify the engineering investment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The public Broadcom page available for this topic does not identify a particular accelerator model, publish model specifications, or name customer deployments. It is therefore more accurate to describe Broadcom as providing custom AI silicon capabilities than to assign an unverified model name or claim a specific performance advantage.

Networking the AI cluster

AI training and distributed inference require high-speed links between servers and accelerators. Networking components move model parameters, gradients, activations, and user requests through the cluster. Congestion, latency, and inefficient data movement can leave expensive accelerators idle. Broadcom positions its connectivity products as part of scalable, power-efficient AI infrastructure, so its contribution may be in the network fabric surrounding the compute chips as well as in custom compute silicon.

Inference at the edge

Edge AI means running inference near the camera, sensor, machine, vehicle, or local application instead of sending every input to a distant cloud. Local processing can reduce response time, limit bandwidth use, and keep sensitive data on site. The model and hardware must fit a tighter power and thermal budget than a data-center server. Broadcom’s public description supports this localized, real-time inference use case, but does not provide a product-by-product specification table.

What Microsoft Maia chips are used for

Microsoft’s Maia chips are in-house accelerators for Azure infrastructure rather than retail expansion cards. Microsoft’s January 26, 2026 announcement describes Maia 200 as an inference accelerator deployed for Microsoft workloads. The October 12, 2026 update says Maia 200 is serving production workloads, including Copilot, with GitHub Copilot and Microsoft Foundry planned to follow by the end of 2026. These are Microsoft-reported deployments and should be read as company announcements, not independent testing.

Maia 200: production inference

Microsoft said Maia 200 was deployed in the US Central Azure region, with US West 3 planned next. Intended uses include Microsoft Copilot and Microsoft Foundry, and the company said the accelerator would serve multiple models, including OpenAI models. Microsoft also described use by its Superintelligence team for synthetic-data generation and reinforcement learning.

Maia 200 specification or deployment detail Microsoft’s stated figure or description How to interpret it
FP4 performance Over 10 petaFLOPS Microsoft specification in its January 2026 announcement; not an independent comparative measurement.
FP8 performance Over 5 petaFLOPS Microsoft specification in the same announcement; workload results depend on software and system configuration.
High-bandwidth memory 216 GB HBM3e Memory capacity stated by Microsoft for Maia 200.
Cluster scale Up to 6,144 accelerators Maximum cluster size stated by Microsoft, not a claim that every deployment uses that size.
Availability described in announcements Azure deployment, beginning with US Central An Azure infrastructure product, not a generally sold consumer or retail card.

The figures above come from Microsoft’s January 26, 2026 Maia 200 announcement. “PetaFLOPS” is a theoretical arithmetic-rate measure; it does not by itself tell you how quickly a particular language model answers requests. Real performance also depends on precision, model architecture, memory traffic, batching, compiler support, and the rest of the cluster.

Maia 300: an announced later generation

Microsoft’s October 2026 announcement describes Maia 300 as inference-first and aimed at long-context, memory-intensive, and decode-heavy workloads. The same announcement says deployment is expected in 2027. That makes Maia 300 a company plan, not an already available customer product, and no independent results or final availability terms are established here.

How to evaluate an AI chip for a real workload

Choosing hardware starts with the application rather than the vendor name. Use the following sequence when planning a deployment or comparing a cloud instance.

  1. Identify the phase: decide whether you need pre-training, fine-tuning, distillation, batch inference, or interactive inference. Training and serving have different bottlenecks.
  2. Measure the model’s memory footprint: include weights, activations, key-value cache for language models, and framework overhead. A chip that cannot hold the working set may require partitioning across devices.
  3. Set latency and throughput targets: specify first-token latency, total response time, requests per second, or jobs per hour. A single arithmetic figure cannot answer all of these.
  4. Check scale-up and scale-out links: determine how many accelerators must share data inside a server and across servers. Distributed training is especially sensitive to communication overhead.
  5. Verify software compatibility: confirm that your framework, operators, precision formats, compiler, monitoring tools, and serving stack support the accelerator. Porting a model can change the economics.
  6. Account for power and cooling: compare the complete server or rack, not just the chip’s advertised compute number. Facility power availability and thermal design can limit the practical cluster size.
  7. Choose the access model: a cloud service can avoid hardware procurement and let you scale by demand; owned infrastructure may make sense for steady utilization, data-control requirements, or long-lived workloads.
  8. Benchmark your model: use the exact model, precision, batch size, prompt lengths, software versions, and system topology you expect in production. Do not convert unlike vendor figures into a league table.

Why memory, networking, and software change the answer

Two accelerators with similar nominal compute can behave very differently. Memory bandwidth affects how quickly weights and activations are supplied to the arithmetic units. Capacity determines whether a model fits on one device or must be split. Interconnect bandwidth controls how efficiently multiple devices cooperate. For inference, the key-value cache can grow with context length and concurrent users, making memory capacity especially important.

Software determines which operations are accelerated and how well the hardware is utilized. Kernels may be fused to reduce memory traffic; quantization may reduce model size; and a compiler may schedule work differently for prefill and decode. Unsupported operators can fall back to a CPU or an alternative path, erasing the advantage suggested by a headline specification.

Power and cooling are operational constraints rather than afterthoughts. A cluster that fits a theoretical compute target may require additional electrical capacity, liquid or air cooling, networking equipment, storage, and staff to operate it. For cloud users, those details are embedded in the service price and instance configuration; for data-center owners, they are part of the total cost.

What the public claims do—and do not—prove

NVIDIA’s pages, Broadcom’s AI-solutions page, and Microsoft’s Maia announcements are primary-source descriptions from the companies themselves. They establish intended uses, product positioning, and, in Microsoft’s case, stated deployment details. They do not create a neutral benchmark across all three companies.

A valid cross-vendor comparison would need the same model, dataset, numerical precision, software maturity, batch and concurrency settings, network topology, power measurement method, and price basis. Without those controls, “faster” may refer to a theoretical operation rate, a particular kernel, or a complete application result. The cited material does not provide that like-for-like test.

Can ordinary developers buy these chips?

NVIDIA accelerators can be reached through cloud GPU instances or purchased as part of servers, subject to provider availability and the workload’s software requirements. Broadcom’s custom accelerators are described as infrastructure components and are not presented on the cited page as ordinary retail products. Microsoft Maia is an Azure internal accelerator; the announcements describe Microsoft’s regions and services rather than a separate Maia card that customers can install in a private PC or server.

For most developers, the practical decision is therefore which cloud instance or managed service exposes suitable accelerator capacity, memory, software support, and pricing. Enterprises operating large, predictable workloads may also evaluate owned systems or custom silicon, but that requires accounting for networking, facilities, software engineering, and utilization—not just the processor specification.

The practical answer

NVIDIA’s AI chips are used across the widest range of documented workloads, from training and inference to scientific, analytics, rendering, and video systems. Broadcom’s AI work is aimed at custom data-center acceleration, the networking that lets large AI clusters operate, and edge inference close to devices. Microsoft’s Maia line is designed to improve the economics and operation of Microsoft’s own Azure services, with Maia 200 already reported in production inference and Maia 300 announced for 2027.

To decide what an AI chip is “for,” start with the model phase, memory footprint, latency or throughput target, scale, software stack, and facility or cloud constraints. Those factors determine whether a broad GPU platform, custom accelerator, network-focused solution, or an in-house cloud chip fits the job.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
