If an NFL game is “blacked out” where you live, it usually means the game is unavailable on the service or device you are using in that location—not that the game has disappeared from every television or streaming platform. NFL distribution is divided by local broadcast markets, out-of-market packages, national rights, geography and device rules. That is why a game may be on a local channel, absent from NFL Sunday Ticket, available on a phone through NFL+, or carried by a different provider altogether.
This guide explains what “local” and “out of market” mean, why Sunday Ticket and NFL+ show different games, how to check a specific matchup for your ZIP code, and how today’s service restrictions differ from the older sellout-blackout rule often mentioned in explanations online.

What an NFL blackout means now
In everyday conversation, viewers call any unavailable game a blackout. The more precise description is usually unavailable on this service in this location. A provider may be unable to show a game because another network owns the rights in your market, because the package covers only out-of-market games, because the game is nationally distributed, or because your device is not eligible for that stream.

NFL Support defines a local game as an in-market game available on television in the viewer’s local TV market. An out-of-market game is outside that designated broadcast region. The same matchup can therefore be local for one household and out of market for another. Your physical location, not the team you support or the billing address on a subscription, determines which market rules apply at that moment.

A restriction on one service is not proof that the NFL has removed the game everywhere. The local station may still carry it, a national network may have exclusive rights, or a different package may show it. NFL subscription terms also say availability can vary by geographic location, viewing platform and device, and can be affected by broadcast policy and local or geographic blackouts.
Why your location changes what you can watch
TV markets assign local games
Broadcast rights are organized around geographic markets. The station or service designated for your market receives the local game window. If you subscribe to an out-of-market package, that local assignment can prevent the package from showing the same game, even when the package carries other games at the same time.
Market boundaries do not always match team-fan geography. You may live near a stadium, across a state line, or in an area where a different affiliate is designated. The only reliable way to identify the assignment is to check the NFL’s location-based schedule or a local listing for your address.
Rights can be national, local or package-specific
Some games are distributed nationally rather than through the ordinary Sunday-afternoon local window. A national broadcast can take precedence over a local affiliate, while a streaming or cable rightsholder may control another time slot. Sunday Ticket and NFL+ do not override those agreements; each product shows only the categories its terms include.

Platforms and devices add another layer
A subscription can be valid while a particular stream remains unavailable on your television, computer or phone. NFL terms identify platform and device as separate availability factors. NFL+ commonly limits eligible live local and primetime viewing to a phone or tablet, while a television app may present a different set of games or require another rightsholder’s service. Do not assume that signing in on a second device changes your market assignment.
How NFL Sunday Ticket handles out-of-market games
NFL Sunday Ticket, offered through YouTube and YouTube TV, is the route identified in official guidance for out-of-market Sunday afternoon regular-season games. “Out of market” is the key qualification: the package is intended for Sunday-afternoon games that are not available in your local television market.
That scope does not mean Sunday Ticket carries every NFL game. A local Sunday-afternoon broadcast may be excluded because it is already assigned to your market station. Nationally distributed games have their own rights and are not automatically part of the package. Games outside the regular-season Sunday-afternoon category—such as primetime contests—also require checking their specific broadcaster or service.

What NFL+ does—and does not—show
NFL+ has a narrower live scope. NFL guidance describes eligible live local and primetime regular-season and postseason games on a phone or tablet. NFL Support specifically says live out-of-market Sunday-afternoon regular-season games are not available live on NFL+ and require Sunday Ticket instead.
This distinction explains a common frustration: an NFL+ subscriber may see a local or primetime game on a mobile device but receive no live stream for an out-of-market Sunday-afternoon matchup. The subscription has not failed; that game belongs to a different rights category.
Eligibility can also vary by plan, season, location and device. Read the current NFL+ terms shown at signup and confirm the supported device before assuming a mobile entitlement includes television playback. Postseason and primetime availability should be checked for the specific game because distribution arrangements can change.

How to check a game for your exact location
- Identify the matchup and kickoff window. Note whether it is a Sunday-afternoon regular-season game, a primetime game, a postseason game or an international broadcast. The category determines which rights rules are relevant.
- Open the NFL’s Ways to Watch schedule. Use the location-based schedule for the current season. It is designed to show the services and channels associated with your market rather than relying on a national list.
- Enter your ZIP code when prompted. NFL Support describes a ZIP-code lookup for checking local and out-of-market status. Use the ZIP code where you will actually watch, especially if you are traveling.
- Compare the result with your local listings. Confirm the affiliate, network or streaming service shown for that address. A package can omit a local game even when it carries other games in the same time slot.
- Check the device requirement. If the result points to NFL+, verify that your phone or tablet is supported. If it points to a television network or another app, confirm that your subscription and hardware include that service.
- Recheck close to kickoff. Schedules, regional assignments and platform rights are time-sensitive. A listing from a prior season or an old support article may not describe the current game.
Why a game may be missing from a subscription
The game is local
Out-of-market packages are designed to supply games outside your market. When a matchup is assigned to your local station, the package can withhold it while the local broadcaster carries it.

The game is nationally distributed
National games follow a separate distribution agreement. They may appear on the network or service holding that national right rather than in Sunday Ticket or NFL+.
Your product covers a different game window
Sunday Ticket’s defined category is out-of-market Sunday-afternoon regular-season games. NFL+ focuses on eligible local and primetime live games on mobile devices. A game outside those categories can be absent even when your subscription is active.
Your device is not eligible
NFL terms distinguish platform and device availability. A mobile entitlement does not automatically provide television playback, and a television app may not expose the same rights as a phone or tablet.

The historical sellout-blackout rule is not the same thing
Older explanations often say an NFL game was blacked out locally whenever the stadium failed to sell enough tickets. That shorthand describes a historical policy context, not a complete explanation of current streaming restrictions.
The Federal Register notice published March 4, 2026, explains that the former Federal Communications Commission sports-blackout rule addressed cable systems importing a distant station’s signal when a local game had been blacked out for insufficient ticket sales. In other words, the rule concerned retransmission of a distant signal after a venue-related blackout.
Current subscription terms separately describe geographic, platform, device and broadcast-policy limits. A game missing from Sunday Ticket because it is local, or missing from NFL+ because it is an out-of-market Sunday-afternoon game, is a rights and package issue—not evidence that the stadium failed a ticket-sales threshold.

It is therefore safer to describe the distinction than to repeat an unverified end date.
What you can do when the listing and the app disagree
- Verify the ZIP code and account location. A saved travel location or incorrect address can produce a different market result.
- Check the game category. Confirm whether it is local, out of market, national, primetime or postseason before troubleshooting the app.
- Use the required device. Try the phone or tablet specified for an NFL+ live entitlement, or use the network’s approved television app for a local broadcast.
- Compare official listings. Check the NFL Ways to Watch schedule, NFL Support and the local station’s schedule for the same kickoff time.
- Allow for last-minute rights changes. Regional assignments and platform availability can change by season or game; an old screenshot is not authoritative.
- Do not treat a VPN or location spoofing as an endorsed fix. The reviewed NFL guidance does not recommend bypassing geographic restrictions, and doing so can conflict with provider terms or produce an inaccurate market assignment.
Indoor antennas: a limited local option
An indoor TV antenna can help when your local over-the-air station is carrying the game and your home receives that station’s signal. It does not unlock an out-of-market matchup, change a package’s rights or bypass a geographic restriction. Reception depends on your distance from the transmitter, building materials, terrain and the station serving your market. Treat an antenna as an optional way to receive an already-available local broadcast, not as a replacement for an out-of-market package.
International viewing is a separate rights question
Viewers outside the United States are not governed by the same U.S. market map. NFL guidance points international viewers toward NFL Game Pass International through DAZN, but the available product, games and terms vary by country. Confirm the current offer in the country where you will watch; a U.S. Sunday Ticket or NFL+ explanation cannot establish international availability.
Quick Recap
Questions to ask before paying for a package
- Is the game Sunday-afternoon regular season, primetime or postseason?
- Is my address in the game’s local broadcast market?
- Does the package include local games, or only out-of-market games?
- Will I watch on a television, computer, phone or tablet, and is that device supported?
- Which network or service is listed for this exact matchup and ZIP code?
- Am I relying on a current-season listing rather than an old schedule?
