What “New Tag Collected” Means on Samsung Phones—and What to Do

“New tag collected” usually means your Samsung phone has detected an NFC tag and is processing its contents. The notification alone does not mean the phone has been hacked or that the tag is dangerous. Check what may be near the phone, and review any action it presents before opening or following it.

What does “New tag collected” mean?

Android’s Tags app source uses “New tag collected” as the title for the activity that displays a newly scanned tag. The NFC Forum’s Cross-platform NFC Tag UX specification explains that Android can read records stored on a tag and present possible actions. Depending on the record, these could include a web or phone action; an unsupported record may be identified as an unknown tag type.

The wording identifies NFC tag handling, not the object that was scanned. Android source strings from older revisions show this label, but they do not prove that every Samsung phone or One UI version presents an identical screen. The message itself does not establish what a tag contains or whether it is safe.

Why might the notification appear?

A tag, card, or accessory is close to the phone

NFC works at close range. A card, badge, sticker, or other NFC item touching or sitting near the phone is a reasonable first thing to check—especially if the alert appears when you unlock or move the device. That is a troubleshooting inference, not a confirmed diagnosis for every recurring notification. Ezurio’s Android NFC guide demonstrates a normal tag read that displays text under the same notification heading.

You are using an NFC-enabled workflow

The alert can occur during a legitimate task. For example, Printix says Android may show “New tag collected” if its printer tag is scanned before the user selects the app’s NFC scan control. If the message appears while printing or using another NFC service, return to that app and follow its scan instructions.

What should you do when it appears?

  1. Check nearby items. Move NFC-capable cards, badges, tags, stickers, or accessories away from the phone and see whether the alert stops. This can help identify a nearby trigger, but it cannot identify the tag by itself.
  2. Review the displayed content. If the phone offers a URL, phone number, or another action, inspect it before proceeding. Do not open or execute anything you do not recognize. The NFC Forum specification describes how tag records can map to possible actions; it does not certify an individual tag as safe.
  3. Use NFC off as a temporary diagnostic test. Turn NFC off in your phone’s available settings and observe whether the notification stops. Samsung Community users have suggested this test, but it is diagnostic advice, not a universal official fix. NFC-dependent functions will not work while NFC is off; turn it back on when the test is complete if you need them.
  4. Look for an unknown-tag setting only if needed. A Samsung Community response also suggests disabling “unknown tag detection,” but the cited path is community advice and may not match your model or One UI version. Search your phone’s settings for the relevant option or consult Samsung support rather than relying on a menu path that may not exist on your device.
  5. Follow the app’s scan flow. If the alert appears during a printer, payment, access, or other NFC task, start or select the scan function in the relevant app before presenting the phone to the tag.

Does the notification mean your phone was hacked?

No—not on its own. The phrase indicates that Android detected and is handling a tag; it does not prove malware, a compromise, or hardware failure. Because the tag’s contents are not identified by the notification title, treat an unexpected action cautiously. The evidence available does not support a factory reset, security app, or paid repair based only on this message.

Why Samsung instructions may differ

Samsung-specific troubleshooting discussions include suggestions to test NFC or look for an unknown-tag detection option, but those suggestions are not official confirmation of a setting available on every Galaxy phone. Menu names and behavior can vary by model and One UI version. If NFC settings do not explain a persistent alert, use Samsung support for guidance specific to your device.
