Naturally preserved mummies can retain evidence of a person’s diet, health, movement, cultural practices and surroundings. Researchers uncover those clues by asking specific questions of particular tissues or images; the results are partial, and one person’s remains cannot stand in for an entire culture.
What makes a mummy “natural”?
A natural mummy is preserved through environmental conditions rather than being defined by intentional preparation. Dryness, cold, or other conditions can slow decay, but preservation varies: a body may retain skin, hair, or internal structures while other evidence is lost. Mummy research includes both naturally preserved and intentionally treated remains, and the conditions and burial context shape what can still be studied. The University of York’s Mummy Research Group describes research spanning different regions and traditions.
“Natural” does not mean untouched by people or culture. A preserved body may reflect both the environment in which it was buried and human choices made during life or after death. Those influences need to be considered separately when interpreting evidence.
What can researchers learn from different methods?
Each method answers a different question. Imaging shows structure; isotopes can indicate aspects of diet and resource use; DNA may inform biological relationships; and chemical analysis can detect traces of substances. None automatically supplies a complete biography, and results depend on the material available and its preservation.

How diet and landscape leave traces
Stable isotopes are variants of elements incorporated into body tissues. Their measured values can help researchers assess broad dietary patterns, but interpretation depends on which tissue is sampled, the local foods and ecosystems used as a comparison, and the period of life represented.
The National Museum of the Philippines explains that carbon-13 values reflect aspects of the dietary ecosystem and protein sources, while nitrogen-15 values indicate trophic level—the food chain position relative to plants or other producers. Its 2022 account reports isotope analysis of 81 human skeletal remains from six burial sites. The results indicate varied reliance on terrestrial and aquatic foods among those sampled. This is evidence from archaeological skeletal remains, not a dataset consisting only of mummies, and it does not describe every person in the Philippines.

Hair can preserve a more sequential record than some other tissues, making it useful for questions about changes over a shorter period before death. A 2007 PNAS study analyzed hair from four Andean child mummies using isotope and genetic evidence to investigate aspects of identity, diet, social background and ritual preparation. The authors said the findings “amplif[y], yet also partly contrast[] with, Spanish historical accounts.” The case illustrates how bodily evidence can add detail to written records without simply confirming them.
What scans can—and cannot—show
CT imaging lets researchers examine internal anatomy and possible injuries while keeping the remains intact. A scan may reveal a feature worth investigating, but an image alone does not explain how it arose, whether it caused death, or what the person experienced.

In 2018, Museo Regional de Atacama reported CT scans of three mummified children associated with the Iglesia Colorada archaeological site. The museum account also says the remains returned after conservation and packaging. This is a specific institutional report about a particular group; it is not evidence that scans can answer every question about mummified people.
What chemical traces can tell us
Chemical analysis can identify a substance in sampled tissue, but presence is only the beginning of interpretation. In a 2007 Nature Precedings study presented as a preprint, researchers reported harmine in three of 32 sampled Atacama mummy hair specimens. The authors discussed possible plant use and exchange. The finding should remain a study-specific report: detection does not prove why any individual used the substance, or establish a general practice across a population.

Why preservation and context set the limits
Different remains preserve different evidence. Hair and other soft tissues may retain signals that bone or teeth do not, while bones and teeth may address different timescales and questions. A tissue’s condition, burial environment, handling, and contamination risks all affect how much confidence researchers can place in a result.
DNA illustrates the problem: even when a body is well preserved to the eye, authentic ancient DNA may not survive or be recoverable. A 2014 study on salt-mummified tissue notes that bog bodies often fail to yield authentic ancient DNA. Isotope values and chemical markers likewise require careful interpretation; no single method makes an incomplete record complete.

- Keep the claim tied to the sample: say which tissue or image was examined and what was actually measured.
- Separate observation from explanation: a visible injury, isotope pattern, or chemical detection is not automatically a cause, behavior, or cultural meaning.
- Respect the scale of the evidence: findings from one body or a small group do not describe a whole population without broader comparative evidence.
Why these traces matter
A naturally preserved body is not a complete account of a life. It is a set of surviving traces that can be tested against archaeological context and other evidence. Used carefully, those traces can help reconstruct parts of how people ate, moved, lived, and interacted with their environments—while leaving some questions unresolved.
