A USB-C MST dock can therefore drive more than one monitor from a single laptop connection—but only when the computer’s port, graphics hardware, operating system, dock, cables and monitors all support the intended setup. USB-C by itself does not guarantee video output or MST.
How MST works over USB-C
USB-C describes the connector, not necessarily the features available through it. A computer can send video through USB-C using DisplayPort Alternate Mode, but the specific port must support that mode. Microsoft notes that the PC or phone, connected device or adapter, and sometimes the cable must support the relevant alternate mode: Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance.

An MST hub takes a compatible incoming DisplayPort connection and distributes its streams to multiple downstream display outputs. MST can also support a DisplayPort daisy chain: the computer connects to one monitor, which passes a stream onward to another display. In either arrangement, every part of the video path must support the required DisplayPort mode and MST.
Will an MST dock give you two extended screens?
That depends on the host computer and operating system, not just the number of sockets on the dock. Plugable’s compatibility guide says Windows and ChromeOS support multiple independent extended displays through MST, while macOS does not: Plugable’s MST guide. StarTech likewise says its MST hubs cannot provide multiple extended displays on macOS; connected screens may mirror instead: StarTech’s macOS guidance for MST hubs.

- USB-C Docking Station: This docking station transforms a single USB-C port on your computer (DP Alt mode and Thunderbolt 3 compatible) to connect to multiple devices, including HDMI enabled displays, external HDDs, flash drives, Ethernet, headset (speaker & microphone) and SD memory card.
- Dual 4K HDMI - The docking station is powered with multi-stream transport (MST) technology to extend video signal from your laptop or desktop computer to two HDMI displays, monitors, or projectors.
- Superb Resolutions - The dock delivers 4K@60Hz (DP1.4 with DSC) on two monitors. DisplayPort 1.4 is required to meet the resolution above. Refer to video output table in detail within the user manual.
- Continuous Power Support - The docking station supports up to 60 watts of Power Delivery via the package included USB-C 5V/20A cable, which provides non-stop power for laptops, notebooks, tablets, and smartphones.
- Wide Applications - This MST dock is widely useful in different circumstances, such as office, media editing, education, financial, workstation, web design studio, control centers, working from home, photo shooting studio, reception room, and many more.
This limitation applies to MST-based display splitting. It does not mean a Mac cannot use more than one external display through other connection technologies. Apple supports adapters compliant with DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt 3/4, and the behavior depends on the dock’s design: Apple’s adapter guidance. Thunderbolt and USB4 are not synonyms for MST; they can carry display traffic, but a particular dock may route displays differently depending on the host connection. Check the dock maker’s compatibility table for the exact computer and connection type.
What determines the number and quality of displays?
There is no universal MST monitor count or resolution. The practical limit depends on the host GPU’s supported active-display count, the available video bandwidth, the dock’s design, the monitors and cables, and the resolution and refresh rate used together. Adding displays can mean lowering resolution or refresh rate; Microsoft explicitly warns that daisy-chaining can reduce both as monitors are added: Microsoft’s Surface display and daisy-chain guidance.

- Compatibility: Supports USB-C, USB4, and Thunderbolt connections. Compatible with Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
As a model-specific example—not a general MST limit—Microsoft says its Surface USB4 Dock supports two 4K monitors at 60 Hz over USB-C or HDMI 2.1 when connected to a device supporting USB4 or Thunderbolt 4, or one 8K monitor at 30 Hz over USB-C. The dock’s specifications and supported host are the relevant context for those figures: Microsoft’s Surface USB4 Dock documentation.
What to check before choosing a dock
- Exact laptop port: Verify that the port you will use supports video output and the required mode, such as DisplayPort Alternate Mode, USB4 or Thunderbolt. A USB-C-shaped socket alone is not proof.
- Operating system and GPU: Confirm the OS supports the display behavior you want and check the graphics hardware’s maximum number of active displays.
- Dock topology and host support: Determine whether the dock uses MST splitting, a daisy chain or another display path. Consult its host-specific compatibility table, including any distinction between Thunderbolt/USB4 and USB-C DisplayPort Alternate Mode hosts.
- Monitor arrangement: Check whether the goal is separate extended desktops or mirrored screens. For daisy chaining, monitors in the chain need DisplayPort 1.2 or later and MST support; intermediate monitors also need a DisplayPort output. Microsoft says DisplayPort 1.2 may need to be enabled in a monitor’s on-screen menu.
- Combined display mode: Confirm the supported resolution and refresh rate with all intended monitors connected at once, rather than relying on a dock’s maximum for a single output.
- Cables and other dock features: Use cables rated for the required connection and follow the laptop or dock maker’s recommendations. Check USB peripherals, Ethernet and power delivery separately from video compatibility.
Why an MST dock may show one screen or mirror both
If a second monitor is missing or duplicates the first, work through the connection chain rather than assuming the dock is defective.

- Check the laptop port. Look up the exact computer model and confirm that the connected USB-C port supports video output and the relevant display mode. Some USB-C ports do not provide DisplayPort Alternate Mode.
- Check the OS behavior. If you need independent extended screens through MST, verify that the operating system supports that arrangement. Plugable identifies Windows and ChromeOS as supporting independent MST displays, unlike macOS.
- Check the GPU limit and dock table. The GPU may limit active displays, and a dock’s supported outputs can vary with the host connection. Use the maker’s table for the exact laptop and dock configuration.
- For a daisy chain, inspect each monitor. Confirm MST support, DisplayPort input and output on intermediate displays, and the necessary DisplayPort mode in each monitor’s menu.
- Test the cable path. Check cable capability and try a manufacturer-recommended cable; Microsoft advises trying another cable when a DisplayPort connection fails.
- Recheck resolution and refresh rate. The combined setup may not support the same settings as a single monitor, so test the intended mode with every display attached.
Choosing the right connection type
A USB-C MST hub, USB-C multi-monitor dock or USB-C DisplayPort MST adapter can be a suitable choice when the computer supports the required mode and the desired display arrangement. The number of video sockets does not establish compatibility: confirm the host, OS, GPU, monitors, cables and combined display settings before buying. If the host is a Mac, check specifically whether the dock uses MST or another display technology and what its documentation says about extended displays.
