What Moves Corn, Soybean, and Wheat Futures Prices?

Corn, soybean, and wheat futures prices move when traders revise what they think future supply and demand will be. The important change is usually not a crop total by itself, but a change in the expected balance: acreage, yield, stocks, exports, processing, feed use, biofuel demand, competing origins, weather, policy, or transport risk.

A report can therefore push prices in either direction. A number that looks bearish in isolation may be bullish if traders expected an even larger surplus; a smaller-than-expected tightening can weigh on prices. The practical task is to identify what information changed, translate it into the relevant crop balance, and compare it with expectations already embedded in the futures contract.

Futures prices are prices for changing expectations

A grain futures contract reflects the market’s estimate of what a deliverable commodity will be worth at a specified future point. Traders continuously update that estimate as new information arrives. If the update implies less available supply or stronger use than previously expected, prices are generally supported, all else equal. If it implies more supply or weaker use, prices generally face pressure.

That “all else equal” qualification matters. A supply cut can be offset by weaker exports, while stronger ethanol or crush demand can offset a larger harvest. The same headline can also produce opposite reactions in different contract months because the market is pricing different delivery periods.

The central question is not “Was the report bullish or bearish?” It is “How did the report differ from what the market had already anticipated, and how does that difference change the balance sheet?”

How the supply side changes the balance

Acreage and planting decisions

Planted and harvested acreage establish the area from which a crop can be produced. Early in the season, acreage-intention surveys and the USDA’s Prospective Plantings and Acreage reports can move futures because they alter the possible size of the crop before yield is known. Planting progress then shows whether producers are getting the intended area into the ground on schedule.

USDA’s outlook process combines survey data, market news, trade data, foreign reporting, satellite imagery, weather analysis, and other agency information. Its monthly WASDE report turns those inputs into U.S. and world supply-and-use forecasts for wheat, coarse grains such as corn, and oilseeds such as soybeans.

Weather and crop condition

Weather affects prices through its effect on the crop, not simply because a forecast sounds dramatic. Rain or heat matters differently during planting, emergence, pollination, pod filling, grain filling, and harvest. Excess moisture can delay planting or harvest; heat and drought can reduce yield potential; favorable conditions can improve crop prospects.

USDA’s weekly Crop Progress reports track planting, development, harvest progress, and crop condition during the growing season. A weather story becomes more price-relevant when it changes the condition data, the timing of fieldwork, or the yield assumptions used in production estimates. Weather in major exporting regions outside the United States can alter the global balance and the competitiveness of U.S. supplies as well.

Yield, production, and harvest results

Once a crop is developing, yield estimates become the key supply variable. A small change in yield applied to a large planted area can materially change production. Later in the season, harvest reports and realized yields replace early assumptions. Futures can move before a final number is available because traders are constantly pricing the probability of different outcomes.

Stocks and timing

Ending stocks represent the inventory left after expected use during a marketing year. Lower projected ending stocks normally indicate a tighter balance and are supportive, while larger stocks normally indicate more available supply and are bearish, all else equal. The market also cares about when and where stocks are available, how quickly they are being used, and whether the inventory is in the United States or elsewhere.

USDA’s quarterly Grain Stocks report provides an inventory snapshot. It must be read alongside production, feed or processing use, exports, and the marketing-year calendar; the same stock number can imply different conditions when use is high versus low.

How demand changes for each crop

Corn: feed, ethanol, exports, and competing uses

Livestock feed is a major corn use, so cattle, hog, and poultry feeding prospects influence expected domestic demand. Ethanol production is another major channel. Changes in fuel markets, blending economics, or biofuel policy can alter expected corn consumption by ethanol plants.

Exports add a third channel. Sales to foreign buyers support demand for U.S. corn, while weak sales or aggressive offers from competing origins can reduce the export volume traders expect. Feed, ethanol, and exports can move in different directions, so a strong signal in one channel does not establish the entire corn outlook.

Soybeans: exports, crush, meal, and oil

Soybean demand is split between whole-bean exports and domestic crushing. Crushing produces soybean meal, widely used in animal feed, and soybean oil, used in food and energy markets. A crusher’s economics therefore connect three linked markets: beans, meal, and oil.

Growing processing demand can support soybean use even when whole-bean exports are slow. Conversely, weaker meal demand or poor crush margins can reduce the amount of beans processors are expected to buy. Soybean oil demand is especially sensitive to biofuel-related policy and renewable-fuel markets, so a policy change can affect the value of the bean through the oil co-product.

The USDA’s Soybeans and Oil Crops materials explain the processing and co-product relationships that make soybean analysis different from a single-output crop.

Wheat: a global, class-specific market

Wheat is traded globally, and supply, demand, trade, and price information spans the United States and major producing and consuming countries. Export competition, food and feed use, and stocks all matter, but wheat is not one perfectly uniform product.

Class, quality, protein content, geography, and destination can change which supplies compete. A large harvest of one class cannot automatically replace a shortage of another. When reading a wheat move, identify the relevant class and origin rather than treating every wheat statistic as interchangeable. USDA’s Wheat outlook covers domestic and international conditions.

Exports, competing origins, and policy

USDA Export Sales is a weekly view of foreign demand for U.S. crops. It shows sales commitments and shipments, which are related but not identical: a sale can be booked before the physical cargo moves. Traders compare the pace of commitments and shipments with the export total implied by current balance sheets.

Competing origins affect that calculation. If another exporting region has a large crop, favorable currency or freight conditions, or an aggressive offer, buyers may source less from the United States. Production problems, port interruptions, sanctions, tariffs, or other trade restrictions can reverse that advantage. Transportation disruptions can change both the delivered price and the timing of available supplies.

Biofuel rules are another policy link. For corn, ethanol policy influences use of the grain. For soybeans, renewable-fuel demand can change the value of soybean oil and the incentive to crush beans. Policy announcements matter most when they change the volume traders expect, the timing of that volume, or the profitability of processing.

Reports that traders use to update the outlook

The following reports are recurring reference points. Release dates and the latest numbers should be checked on the current USDA calendar before acting on a report.

Report or data set What it contributes How to interpret it
WASDE Monthly U.S. and world forecasts for production, use, imports, exports, and ending stocks. Focus on the change from the prior forecast and the difference from market expectations.
Crop Progress Weekly seasonal measures of planting, crop development, harvest progress, and condition. Relate the reading to the crop’s stage and to the yield risk implied by current weather.
Prospective Plantings and Acreage Producer planting intentions followed by reported planted acreage. Compare the acreage figure with prior estimates and the area traders had expected.
Grain Stocks Quarterly inventory snapshots. Read stocks with the marketing-year use rate, location, and production outlook.
Export Sales Weekly foreign sales commitments and shipment information for U.S. crops. Separate booked sales from physical shipments and compare the pace with the export target.
USDA ERS outlooks Background on feed grains, soybean processing and co-products, and wheat trade and prices. Use the crop-specific context to avoid treating all grains as if they had the same demand structure.

WASDE is prepared and released by USDA’s World Agricultural Outlook Board. It organizes a large amount of information, but it is not a guaranteed price forecast. The market can rally on a lower production estimate, fall on the same estimate if an even larger cut was expected, or barely move if the change was already priced in.

Why the surprise matters more than the headline

Consensus versus the published number

Before a report, traders form an expectation from surveys, private estimates, weather models, prior reports, and market prices. The published figure is then compared with that expectation. A report showing large stocks may be bullish if the market expected even larger stocks; a smaller-than-expected reduction in stocks may be bearish even though stocks fell.

CME’s guide to major USDA reports explains this surprise mechanism. In practice, write down the pre-report expectation, the new figure, and the direction of the balance-sheet change before describing a price reaction.

Positioning and forced reactions

Traders also enter reports with positions. When the result contradicts a widely held view, they may add to positions, reduce them, or exit quickly. That positioning can make the initial move larger than the underlying change in supply or demand. It does not replace fundamental analysis; it explains why a modest surprise can produce a sharp short-term response.

Outside shocks

Energy prices, geopolitical events, trade policy, overseas weather, and transport disruptions can change the expected value of a crop or its products without appearing first in a USDA crop-condition table. These shocks may affect several crops at once, but not necessarily in the same direction because each crop has different uses and competing suppliers.

A practical method for explaining any futures move

  1. Identify the contract and time. Note the crop, delivery month, exchange contract, and the exact time of the move. A nearby contract and a deferred contract can respond differently to the same news.
  2. List the new information. Check the latest WASDE, Crop Progress, Acreage, Grain Stocks, Export Sales, weather developments, policy announcements, and reports from competing origins.
  3. Translate news into a balance-sheet item. Decide whether the information changes acreage, yield, production, imports, exports, feed use, ethanol use, crush, meal demand, oil demand, or ending stocks.
  4. Compare with expectations. Find what traders expected before the release. Label the result as more bullish, less bullish, more bearish, or less bearish than anticipated rather than relying on the headline alone.
  5. Check offsets and linkages. For corn, weigh feed, ethanol, and exports together. For soybeans, examine beans, meal, and oil as a linked crush system. For wheat, check class, quality, origin, and competing exporters.
  6. Separate explanation from proof. A price move establishes that the market changed; it does not by itself prove which news caused it. Tie causality to the dated information and the balance-sheet change that followed.

A dated example of how several drivers can overlap

A CME OpenMarkets commentary published September 21, 2026, discussed a grain and oilseed price surge in the context of weather, geopolitical developments, USDA yield and stocks revisions, feed demand, soybean crush, export demand, and biofuel-policy signals. That kind of episode illustrates why a single-cause explanation can be misleading: several supply and demand expectations can change during the same market window.

The commentary is a historical account of that period, not a current forecast or a universal estimate of how strongly any one factor moves prices. To analyze a different date, use the same method: match the information to the relevant contract and determine what was new relative to expectations. See the full account at CME OpenMarkets.

Interpretation caution Feed, ethanol, and exports can offset one another. Analyze the linked bean, meal, and oil balances. Do not treat all wheat classes and origins as interchangeable.

These are analytical axes, not a ranking of which crop is most sensitive to a particular factor. The relevant driver depends on the crop stage, contract month, information surprise, and competing changes in the balance sheet.

Common mistakes when attributing a move

  • Reading only the headline: A production cut or stock increase has meaning only relative to the prior estimate and the market’s expectation.
  • Treating weather as a direct price signal: Connect the forecast to planting, condition, yield, or harvest timing.
  • Equating export sales with shipments: Commitments show booked demand; shipments show physical movement.
  • Ignoring co-products: Soybean value depends on meal and oil as well as whole-bean demand.
  • Flattening wheat into one market: Class, quality, geography, and origin determine which supplies compete.
  • Assuming one crop’s story transfers to another: Corn feed and ethanol demand, soybean crush economics, and wheat’s global class structure create different transmission channels.
  • Inferring causality from a chart alone: Establish the dated information and the balance-sheet mechanism before claiming why prices moved.

Checklist for a disciplined market read

  • Which contract month moved, and when?
  • What changed in acreage, yield, production, imports, use, exports, or ending stocks?
  • What crop stage and weather conditions make that change plausible?
  • For corn, what are feed, ethanol, and export signals saying together?
  • For soybeans, what do exports, crush margins, meal demand, oil demand, and biofuel policy imply?
  • For wheat, which class and origin are affected, and what are competing exporters doing?
  • Are sales commitments keeping pace with shipments?
  • Did a policy, geopolitical, freight, or overseas-weather shock alter the global balance?
  • How did the new information compare with the consensus before the release?
  • What evidence supports the explanation, and what remains only a plausible interpretation?
