Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses can capture photos and videos while disconnected from the Meta AI app, and gallery captures remain on the glasses until you import them to a phone. A phone is still needed as the documented Bluetooth audio source, while Meta AI questions, importing, firmware updates, sharing and calls require connectivity. Initial setup also requires a smartphone, the Meta AI app, wireless internet and a Meta account.

The practical dividing line is local camera work versus functions that move data to a phone, an app or the cloud. “Without internet” and “without a phone” are therefore different tests: the camera can pass both, while audio can pass the app-disconnected test only when a phone supplies Bluetooth audio.

What works with neither a phone nor internet nearby
Photos
The glasses can take gallery photos using their physical capture controls while they are not connected to the Meta AI app. The resulting files are kept locally on the glasses. This is useful for a walk, event or trip where you want to record a moment immediately rather than transfer it immediately.

Gallery video recording is supported by the same offline capture concept. The official FAQ documents capture-button controls for both photos and video. It does not establish a phone-free method for reviewing the recordings on the glasses, so treat the device as a capture tool rather than a standalone playback gallery.

Local retention is not automatic sharing
Meta says gallery photos and videos remain on the glasses until you choose to import them to a phone. A capture therefore does not, by itself, prove that a file has been uploaded, posted or sent to someone else. Importing and sharing are later actions that use the app, phone or an online service.
What “without a phone” means for audio
Audio is the feature most likely to be misunderstood. The official FAQ says the glasses can play audio from a phone connected over Bluetooth even when the glasses are not connected to the Meta AI app. In that situation, the phone is still the audio source; the glasses are acting as the listening hardware.
That statement does not establish that the glasses independently stream music, store a music library or play audio with no phone at all. If you leave your phone behind, do not plan on the documented Bluetooth-audio behavior. Whether the phone’s own audio source needs an internet connection depends on that source; the cited FAQ only establishes the Bluetooth relationship, not offline support for every music or podcast app.

The FAQ specifically permits a battery-level check without the Meta AI app connection when Voice controls were enabled. This is a preparation-dependent feature: if voice controls were never enabled, you should not assume that a spoken battery query will work while disconnected.

The documentation describes this capability in the app-disconnected case. It does not spell out every combination of no phone, no internet and disabled voice controls, so carry the glasses charged and verify the behavior before relying on them for a long outing.
Features that need a phone, app or cloud connection
Visual questions to Meta AI
Asking Meta AI about something in front of you is not an offline operation. The glasses send a photo to Meta’s cloud for AI processing and then return an answer as audio. Without the required connectivity, the glasses cannot complete that cloud round trip.
Importing photos and videos
Captures stay local until you import them. The import process uses the phone and a temporary Wi-Fi network created by the glasses, so it is separate from taking the picture. If you are away from your phone, you can continue recording, but you cannot assume that the files will appear in your phone’s gallery until the import connection is available.
Firmware updates
Firmware updates also use a fast connection and are not available as an offline action. Update the glasses before leaving coverage if you need a particular fix or feature, rather than planning to update in the field.

Sharing and live communication
Sending a capture to another person, posting it, or using the glasses in a video call involves the app, the phone or an online service. Local retention should not be confused with offline sharing: a file can be safely stored on the glasses while still waiting for the connection required to send it.
What to do before an offline outing
Initial setup is not phone-free. The official FAQ lists a smartphone, the Meta AI app, wireless internet access and a Meta account as setup requirements. Complete these steps while you have the required equipment and connectivity:
- Finish pairing and account setup. Do not expect a factory-fresh pair to operate as a fully independent camera before this process is complete.
- Enable Voice controls if you want spoken battery checks. The documented battery function depends on this setting being enabled.
- Charge the glasses. Offline capture does not remove the need for battery power, and the app-disconnected battery check is not a substitute for planning runtime.
- Install any available firmware update. Updates require connectivity, so complete them before departure.
- Test a photo and a short video. Confirm that the capture controls respond and that the front indicator behaves as expected.
- Import before you leave if you need the files on your phone. Otherwise, plan to keep recording locally and transfer later.
- If you need audio, pair the intended phone over Bluetooth. App disconnection does not remove the phone requirement for the documented audio scenario.
How to use the glasses as an offline camera
- Put on the configured glasses and make sure they have charge.
- Use the glasses’ capture button for a photo or video, following the model’s documented capture control for the type of recording you want.
- Watch for the front capture LED. Meta says it blinks during capture and has no off switch.
- Continue recording without trying to open the Meta AI app. The files are retained on the glasses while disconnected.
- When a phone and the required connection are available again, use the app’s import workflow. The glasses create a temporary Wi-Fi connection for that transfer.
- Only after import should you use the phone or an online service to review, edit or share the files.
The documented behavior supports capture and storage, not an offline file-management workflow on the glasses themselves. If you need to confirm a clip, transfer it to the phone when possible rather than assuming the glasses provide a full local gallery interface.
Choose the right expectation for common situations

Privacy and the capture light
Meta says the front capture LED blinks while the glasses are recording a gallery photo or video, and that there is no switch to turn this indicator off. That gives people nearby a visible recording signal. It does not mean a recording is automatically uploaded or shared: gallery files remain on the glasses until you choose to import them.

Use the indicator as a minimum courtesy, not as a replacement for consent or local recording rules. The LED tells you that capture is occurring; it does not answer whether a later import or share will happen.

The glasses will not answer a visual AI question
Check connectivity first. Visual Meta AI requires the image to reach Meta’s cloud and an audio response to return. A successful offline photo does not imply that cloud features are available.
Your files are not visible on the phone
Capturing while disconnected is expected to leave files on the glasses. Reconnect the phone and use the import workflow; the temporary Wi-Fi link is part of that process. Do not treat the absence of an immediate phone copy as evidence that the capture failed.
Audio does not play
Verify that the phone is connected to the glasses over Bluetooth and that the phone, rather than the glasses, has the intended audio source. Being disconnected from the Meta AI app is compatible with the documented Bluetooth-audio case, but having no phone is not.

The spoken battery check fails
Voice controls may not have been enabled before disconnection. The FAQ makes that setting a condition of the app-disconnected battery check.
You are unsure which generation or region applies
Feature behavior can vary by model generation, region and software. The capability statements here are based primarily on the current Ray-Ban US FAQ and Meta’s July 2026 explanation of local storage and the capture LED. Check the support information for your exact glasses before relying on a feature in a safety-critical or time-sensitive situation.
Bottom line for buyers and travelers
Think of Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses as a camera that can keep working locally after the app connection disappears, not as a completely independent phone replacement. With no phone or internet, the dependable documented use is taking photos and videos and retaining those gallery captures on the glasses. A battery check may be available if Voice controls were enabled. Audio still has a documented phone dependency, and Meta AI, importing, updates, sharing and calls wait for the phone, app or cloud connection they require.
