Meta Orion smart glasses are a prototype pair of augmented-reality glasses that place digital, holographic content in the wearer’s view of the real world through transparent lenses. Meta says Orion is not available to the public, and the company has not stated a retail price or firm consumer release date in its official materials.
What are Orion smart glasses?
Meta introduced Orion on September 25, 2024, describing it as its first “true” AR glasses. Project Nazare was the earlier codename. Unlike an opaque headset, Orion is designed to look and feel more like glasses: the wearer can see people and their expressions through transparent lenses while digital imagery appears in the surrounding environment. Meta’s announcement explains the intended design and early experiences.

How does Orion work?
Meta’s Orion product page describes micro-LED projectors and optical-grade silicon carbide optics, with an approximately 70-degree field of view. That figure is Meta’s stated specification, not an independent measurement. Meta also describes custom silicon, miniaturized cameras and sensors for tracking the wearer’s eyes, hands, and surroundings, plus a wireless compute puck.

Meta lists voice, eye tracking, and hand tracking as inputs. Orion also uses an electromyography (EMG) wristband, which detects muscle signals at the wrist so the wearer can interact with the system. The puck provides a separate wireless compute component. These are Meta’s descriptions of a prototype; they do not establish how a final consumer product would perform or be configured.

What can Orion do?
In its 2024 announcement, Meta described early experiences that included Meta AI interpreting what the wearer was looking at and offering visualizations—for example, suggesting recipes based on food in a refrigerator. The company also described hands-free video calls and sending or viewing WhatsApp and Messenger messages. Meta presented these as experiences still being iterated, not as a finalized feature list for a retail product. See Meta’s announcement.
Can you buy Meta Orion glasses?
No. Meta’s product page says Orion is “not available to the public.” The company said the prototype would not make its way into consumers’ hands in that form; it opened access to employees and selected external audiences to gather feedback and develop its consumer AR glasses line. The official sources do not state a retail price or a firm consumer release date. The prototype’s status should not be confused with a current launch commitment.

Meta CTO and Head of Reality Labs Andrew Bosworth described Orion’s role in a December 16, 2024 article: “But the real impact of Orion will be in the products we ship next and the ways it helps us better understand what people love about AR glasses and what needs to get better.” Read Bosworth’s article.

Meta describes Ray-Ban Meta as display-less glasses for hands-free access to an AI assistant, communication, and capture. Orion’s defining difference is its see-through holographic display, which puts digital content into the wearer’s view of the physical environment. They are related parts of Meta’s wearable strategy, but they are not interchangeable names for the same kind of glasses. Meta’s AI glasses page describes the display-less category.

What Orion’s specifications do—and do not—tell you
Orion’s field of view, optics, tracking, and controls help explain Meta’s AR prototype concept, but they are prototype claims rather than independently verified specifications for a shipping device. Meta’s September 2024 announcement also said the company had thought the chance of achieving the combined design was “less than a 10% chance.” That is a retrospective statement about the development challenge, not a measured product statistic or a promise about future availability.
