What each can use depends on three separate things: permissions you grant the app through your phone, information you deliberately share with the AI, and accounts or services you connect. Those are different kinds of access—and each has its own controls.
Three kinds of access to keep separate
Phone permissions
Your phone’s operating system can grant an app permission for a specific capability, such as using the microphone. That permission is not the same as permission to read all your files, messages, or accounts. The sources reviewed here do not provide a complete, current permissions list for every ChatGPT and Meta app on every iOS and Android version.

Information you send to an AI
When you type a prompt, send a voice message, or attach a file or photo to an AI, you are sharing that content with the feature. This is separate from content you have not chosen to submit.
Connected accounts
A connected service can make information available through an account authorization. This access is governed by the provider’s authorization and account permissions, not just by the phone’s app permissions.

What ChatGPT can access through connected apps
OpenAI says access through a connected app depends on the service you connect, the access granted during that provider’s authorization, permissions already attached to the connected account, and any applicable workspace settings. ChatGPT’s own permission prompts determine when it asks to use access that is already available; changing a ChatGPT app permission does not connect an account, expand the provider’s authorization, or revoke it. OpenAI’s connected-app guidance explains these distinctions.
To stop future access through a particular connection, disconnect that account in ChatGPT settings. Treat this as separate from ChatGPT’s general data controls: disconnecting a service changes future access through that connection, not the handling of conversations you have already had.

What Meta AI can access in WhatsApp
WhatsApp’s Help Center says Meta AI will not access files or photos unless you choose to send them to use the feature. Prompts and messages shared with Meta AI are received by Meta to provide responses and improve AI quality. WhatsApp says AI chats and files sent to Meta AI can be deleted. Does Meta AI listen through your phone’s microphone?
For WhatsApp voice prompts, WhatsApp says it will request microphone permission if you have not already granted it. Meta’s Privacy Center says it does not use the microphone without permission and, even with permission, uses it only while you are actively using a feature that needs it; the page gives a Meta AI voice chat as an example. This describes microphone use for the feature and services covered by those pages. It does not establish a complete permissions matrix for every Meta app, phone model, or current operating-system version. A microphone permission does not, by itself, mean the app can read your photos, private messages, or other accounts.

Meta AI across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and other surfaces
Meta lists Meta AI on its website and app and within WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook, with text, image, and voice capabilities. Availability and features can vary by app, account, country, and version. Meta AI’s product page describes the available surfaces, but the official information covered here does not fully establish what Meta AI can access from each surrounding social app. Do not assume the WhatsApp explanation about submitted files or account links applies identically to every Meta AI surface.
How to review and change access
Check the relevant control for the kind of access you want to change. Exact menu names and paths differ across phone versions and product rollouts, so use the current settings on your device rather than relying on a universal path.

- Phone permission: Review the app’s permissions in your phone’s operating-system settings. Change a permission such as microphone access there; this does not disconnect an account or revoke a provider authorization.
- ChatGPT connected account: Review connected apps or accounts in ChatGPT settings. Disconnect an account to stop future access through that connection.
- ChatGPT model-training choice: In ChatGPT settings, turn off “Improve the model for everyone” if you do not want new conversations used to train OpenAI models. OpenAI says those conversations may still appear in chat history, and the setting applies across devices for signed-in users. It does not disconnect apps or delete chat history. Details are in OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ.
- WhatsApp Meta AI sharing: Do not send a file, photo, prompt, or voice message to Meta AI unless you intend to share it for that feature. WhatsApp says AI chats and sent files can be deleted.
What the available information does—and does not—settle
The clearest documented points are that ChatGPT connected services rely on provider authorization and account permissions; WhatsApp says Meta AI receives content a user sends to it and does not access files or photos unless the user chooses to send them; and WhatsApp voice prompts can require microphone permission. The available official guidance does not establish one complete, current list of access permissions for ChatGPT and every Meta app across iOS and Android, or a definitive account of what Meta AI can access from every social-app surface.
