Some held the bodies or bones of important people; other vessels were placed with the dead as offerings, and some large urns may have held incense. The use depended on the community, period, object and its archaeological context.
Some urns held bodies or bones
Several museum records identify Maya urns as containers for human remains. The Walters Art Museum describes large, lidded urns associated with K’iche’ Maya communities in southern Guatemala as holding important individuals. A body might be placed inside as a tightly wrapped bundle, or bones could be deposited after an earlier burial—a practice known as secondary burial. The Walters dates its example to 600–850 CE and reports that most known examples came from sacred caves, while a few were reportedly found in platforms beneath ritual buildings. Museo de América likewise describes one urn as intended for the remains of a deceased ruler or priest. These object-specific descriptions support the use of urns for people of high status, but they do not show that all Maya dead were buried this way. Museo de América: Maya funerary urn

Burial customs varied by rank and community
INAH, Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History, describes burial practices as varying with social rank and includes urn burial among methods associated with important figures in Maya cities. That is evidence for a status-linked practice in the contexts it describes—not a universal rule for Maya communities across different regions and centuries. INAH: funerary practices among the Maya

Not every funerary vessel was a body container
“Funerary vessel” is a broader term than “urn.” It can refer to ceramics placed with the dead or used in funerary offerings, including vessels that were not intended to hold remains. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes a Chamá-style vase, dated 600–900 CE, as used in feasting, gift exchange and funerary offerings. Its presence in a burial setting would not, by itself, mean it held a body. The Met: Chamá-style vase
Some large urns may have held resin incense offered during funerary rituals rather than human remains. The Lowe Art Museum presents this as one possibility alongside bundled burials, while noting that the exact function of some examples remains debated because they were rarely excavated in context. Urns could connect the living with ancestors
At sacred caves described by the Walters, descendants made offerings and sought advice from revered ancestors. In such settings, a burial place was not simply a place to leave the dead: it could also be a setting for continuing relationships between the living and the deceased. This evidence concerns the reported cave contexts and should not be generalized to every Maya burial. Walters Art Museum: funerary urn

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts interprets imagery on a particular K’iche’ urn—including a cacao tree and deity figures—as evoking the sun’s journey through the underworld and themes of death and rebirth. A vessel’s earlier use may matter
Some ceramics found in tombs show wear from earlier use, according to an academic thesis on Maya ceramics. A vessel placed in a burial therefore was not necessarily made only for funerary purposes. Wear can support a history of prior use, but it does not establish the function of every object. Academic thesis on Maya ceramics

How to read claims about a Maya urn
- Check what was found inside. Human remains provide stronger evidence of a container’s role than its shape or burial association alone.
- Separate urns from other funerary ceramics. A cup, vase or plate could accompany the dead or serve in an offering without holding remains.
- Keep region and date attached. The K’iche’ example from southern Guatemala dated 600–850 CE and the Chamá vase dated 600–900 CE represent particular objects, not all Maya ceramics.
- Consider the excavation context. A cave, building platform, tomb or uncertain provenance can change what archaeologists can reasonably infer.
