For a standing tree, either shape the tube itself or add a separate paper or cardboard canopy. Cardstock, shaving cream, food coloring, glue, and small embellishments are optional materials for specific designs.

Materials for a freestanding paint-dot tree
For the simplest standing version, use a cardboard tube, pencil, scissors, green, yellow, red, and orange paint, a paintbrush, and a paper plate or palette. Cotton swabs make small leaf-like dots, but fingers, a sponge, or a paper towel can dab on the paint instead. Shape the tube into a tree with a base, then reopen it so it stands; add the paint dots to suggest fall leaves. See the Acrylic Painting School instructions.

Materials for a separate canopy
Fingerprint canopy on lightweight cardboard
Gather a toilet paper roll, lightweight cardboard, scissors, and red, orange, yellow, brown, and green paint. A cereal box is one possible source of lightweight cardboard. Paint fingerprints onto the cardboard canopy and let it dry. Cut two slits into one end of the tube, then slide the canopy into them. A printable template is also included in the All Kids Network fingerprint tree instructions.

For a marbled top, use white cardstock, shaving cream, food coloring, a cotton swab, and a rubber spatula. The Kids Activity Zone method says to set the print aside to dry for 30 minutes, cut around the tree-top design, and attach it to the tube with hot glue or craft glue. Glue dots or double-sided tape are other suggested attachment options. If you do not want to use shaving cream, the tutorial suggests dabbing acrylic paint onto cardstock with a cotton ball instead.

Construction-paper and cereal canopy
This variation uses a toilet paper roll, green construction paper, fall-colored cereal, scissors, glue, and a marker. Decorate a cut paper tree top with cereal, let the glued piece dry, and fit it into slits cut in the tube. The cereal is an optional decoration for this particular design, not a necessary ingredient for other fall trees. The All Kids Network paper-roll craft says not to eat cereal after glue has been applied.
Materials for a flat stamped tree picture
If the project does not need to stand, use a paper plate, paint, paper or cardstock, a toilet paper or paper towel roll, scissors, glue, and brown construction paper. Glue a paper trunk onto the page, then dip the end of the tube in paint and stamp around it to make the leaves. The tube’s circular end makes the marks; this method creates a picture rather than a freestanding sculpture. See Life Over C’s fall-tree instructions.

Optional finishing details and child-safety notes
For extra texture or personality, the marbled-canopy tutorial lists real leaves, sequins, stickers, pom-poms, markers for the trunk, and googly eyes. These are optional; choose only the details that suit your design. For young children, an adult can cut the shapes. An adult should handle hot glue; craft glue is an alternative. These are practical craft suggestions, not formal safety standards.
