A 3D printer can use only the material family its process and hardware support. FFF/FDM machines melt thermoplastic filament, while SLA, DLP and MSLA machines cure photosensitive liquid resin with light. Within those limits, choose for the finished part’s job—heat, impact, chemicals, sunlight, flexibility, appearance and mechanical load—not simply for a label such as “strong.” The easiest material to print is often the best choice when it already meets the requirement.

What materials can 3D printers use?

Material choice starts with the printing process. An FFF (fused-filament fabrication), also called FDM (fused-deposition modeling), printer feeds a solid thermoplastic filament through a heated nozzle and deposits it layer by layer. A resin printer uses a vat of liquid photopolymer: SLA, DLP and MSLA systems selectively expose resin to light, then the printed part is washed and post-cured according to the resin maker’s instructions.

These processes are not interchangeable. You cannot put filament into a resin printer, and a resin printer’s liquid vat cannot be replaced with ordinary FFF filament. Even within one process, a material may require a particular filament diameter, nozzle, build surface, temperature range, enclosure, drying routine or resin system. Check the printer manual and the material manufacturer’s current technical and safety documentation before buying.

  • 【Fits Most FDM Printers】 Designed for most 1.75mm FDM printers with external, top-mounted, or open spool holders. Each spool measures 140mm in diameter and 36mm in width, with a 53mm center hole. For Bambu Lab AMS or AMS lite, search MakerWorld for a compatible 250g spool adapter before use
Material family Why people use it Important limitations or equipment
PLA Inexpensive, widely available and suitable for detailed models, figures and general prototypes. Prusa Research describes PLA as “one of the easiest materials to print.” Do not assume it will withstand high heat or demanding chemical exposure. Product and printer settings still determine the result.
PETG Relatively easy to print, with useful toughness and temperature resistance for practical parts. Use only when the printer supports it; surface adhesion, stringing and the exact formulation can differ.
ABS Tenacious and temperature resistant, making it a technical option for mechanically stressed parts. Often needs more controlled printing, and an enclosure may be appropriate. Follow the manufacturer’s setup guidance.
ASA Often selected for outdoor parts because of UV and temperature resistance. Confirm enclosure, ventilation and printer requirements; outdoor suitability does not eliminate all environmental aging.
Polycarbonate (PC) Strong, tough and heat resistant for demanding functional components. Difficult to print and more demanding of the printer, bed and thermal control.
Nylon (polyamide) Versatile technical material for functional parts that need toughness and useful mechanical performance. Moisture management and printer setup are important; drying and dry storage may be necessary.
TPU and other flexible filaments Useful when a part must bend, cushion impact or provide a compliant grip. Check that the extruder can reliably feed the specific flexibility grade; print speeds and retraction behavior differ.
Polypropylene (PP) and other chemical-resistant polymers PP is lightweight and chemically resistant for applications where those properties matter. Adhesion and print setup can be challenging. Select against the actual chemical and mechanical exposure.
PVA/BVOH and HIPS Specialty support materials: PVA and BVOH dissolve in water, while HIPS can dissolve in limonene when paired with compatible materials. Require a compatible multi-material printer and a model filament whose temperatures and interfaces work together.
Filled and composite filaments Wood-, metal-, carbon-, glass- and other filled products can change appearance, stiffness or other behavior. Fillers may require a hardened nozzle and can alter feeding, wear and layer bonding. Verify compatibility before printing.

PLA: the usual first test

PLA is a sensible starting point for a new FFF printer because it is generally approachable and produces detailed parts. It suits decorative objects, concept models, fixtures with modest demands and many learning projects. “Easy to print” is not the same as “suitable for every environment”: heat, sunlight, solvents or sustained mechanical load can exceed the chosen product’s capability. Treat the spool’s data sheet and the printer’s profile as the authority.

PETG: practical parts with moderate difficulty

PETG is often the next material to consider when a part needs more toughness or temperature resistance than a typical PLA application. It remains relatively accessible, but a good result depends on the particular brand, nozzle, surface and cooling profile. Use a manufacturer profile when available, and test a small part before committing to a large functional print.

ABS and ASA: controlled printing for technical or outdoor use

ABS is used for parts exposed to mechanical stress and elevated temperatures. ASA is often chosen for outdoor use because it resists ultraviolet exposure and temperature changes better than many general-purpose options. Both can impose greater demands than PLA or PETG, including enclosure and thermal-management requirements. A printer that can physically melt the filament may still be unsuitable if it cannot control warping or maintain the needed environment.

PC, nylon and flexible materials

Polycarbonate offers a combination of strength, toughness and heat resistance, but it is among the more demanding common FFF choices. Nylon is versatile for functional parts, yet it readily interacts with moisture, so storage and drying can be as important as nozzle temperature. TPU and related flexible grades can make seals, bumpers and grips, but the feed path must support the formulation’s flexibility. “Nylon” and “TPU” describe broad families; compare the exact technical data sheet rather than assuming two products behave alike.

Photopolymer resin for SLA, DLP and MSLA

Resin systems cure liquid photopolymer with ultraviolet or near-ultraviolet light. The formulation determines whether the final part is optimized for detail, rigidity, toughness, flexibility, heat resistance, casting or another use. A resin printer therefore needs a resin profile matched to its wavelength, exposure behavior and post-processing workflow.

Resin parts normally require washing and UV post-curing. Those steps, the required solvents, and handling precautions vary by product. Do not infer that a part is universally safe merely because it has been cured; consult the current safety data sheet and the printer and resin manufacturer’s instructions. Keep uncured resin away from skin and eyes, control spills, and provide the ventilation and protective equipment specified for the exact product.

Resin is attractive when fine detail and a smooth surface are more important than the simpler consumables and cleanup of FFF printing. It is less attractive when the project needs a large, rugged part, easy material storage or minimal post-processing. The process, not a generic “quality” ranking, should drive the choice.

How to choose the right 3D printing material

  1. Confirm the process and compatibility. Identify whether the machine is FFF/FDM or SLA, DLP or MSLA. For FFF, verify filament diameter, supported polymers, nozzle temperature range, heated-bed capability, build surface and any enclosure requirement. For resin, verify the resin family and wavelength/profile support. A material outside those specifications is not made suitable by changing a single slicer setting.
  2. Define the part’s job. Write down whether it is a display model, outdoor housing, flexible cover, load-bearing component, chemical-contact item, support structure or short-lived prototype. Include expected duration, temperature, sunlight, impact, vibration and contact with liquids or solvents.
  3. Rank the required properties. Compare heat tolerance, impact strength or tenacity, chemical resistance, ultraviolet resistance, flexibility, dimensional stability, surface appearance and layer-direction behavior. “Strong” can mean very different things: a stiff part may crack under impact, while a tough part may bend under load.
  4. Check print difficulty and hardware. Some materials benefit from an enclosure; others need a heated bed, hardened nozzle, drybox or careful build-surface selection. Filled filament can wear a standard nozzle. Moisture-sensitive nylon can print poorly after absorbing water. A specialty material is practical only if the complete machine setup can support it.
  5. Plan post-processing and supports. Resin requires washing and curing. Complex FFF geometry may need soluble PVA/BVOH or HIPS supports, provided the model filament and printer are compatible. Decide whether removing supports, sanding, bonding or painting is acceptable before choosing a finish-oriented material.
  6. Include cost and failure risk. Compare the material price with the cost of failed prints, drying equipment, replacement nozzles, build surfaces and your time. Start with the easier material when it satisfies the requirements, then move to a more demanding family only for a documented benefit.

Compare two candidate materials systematically

When two materials appear suitable, use the same checklist for both rather than relying on a single property claim.

Part performance Required heat range, impact or fatigue behavior, chemical and UV exposure, flexibility and load direction.
Printability Likely warping, shrinkage, stringing, moisture sensitivity and the manufacturer’s recommended process window.
Printer burden Enclosure, heated bed, nozzle type, dry storage, build surface and whether the machine can maintain the needed conditions.
Supports and finishing Support material compatibility, removal method, washing or curing, sanding, bonding and appearance after finishing.
Economics Material price plus consumables, failed-print allowance, hardware wear and time per successful part.

Property values are formulation-specific. Use the current filament or resin data sheet for the exact product and do not create a universal ranking from a family name alone.

Match common projects to a starting point

Display models, figures and learning prints

Begin with PLA on an FFF printer when the object is primarily visual and will stay in a moderate indoor environment. Its accessibility and detail capability reduce the cost of learning calibration and support removal.

General-purpose functional parts

Consider PETG when the part needs more toughness or temperature resistance than the intended PLA product provides. Confirm that the printer’s surface and profile support the chosen PETG formulation.

Outdoor brackets, covers and enclosures

ASA is often a candidate because of UV and temperature resistance. Verify the enclosure and thermal requirements first, and evaluate the actual weather and load exposure rather than treating “outdoor” as a guarantee.

High-load or high-temperature components

Evaluate ABS, nylon or PC against the actual load and temperature. These materials can deliver technical advantages but may require drying, enclosure control, a suitable nozzle and more tuning. If the printer cannot provide those conditions, redesigning the part or choosing a less demanding material may be more reliable.

Parts that must bend or cushion

Choose a TPU or other flexible grade only after confirming the extruder and feed path can handle it. Select the hardness and formulation for the required bend, tear and impact behavior; flexibility alone does not specify those properties.

Very fine detail and specialized surfaces

Use a compatible photopolymer resin when small features and a smooth surface outweigh the additional washing, curing and chemical-handling steps. Match the resin profile to the printer and follow its post-cure schedule.

Hardware, storage and setup checks

  • Nozzle: Filled carbon-, glass-, metal- or wood-based filaments can require a hardened nozzle and may accelerate wear in standard brass nozzles.
  • Enclosure: ABS, ASA, PC and some other technical materials may benefit from an enclosure to control drafts and temperature. Follow the printer and filament maker’s requirements.
  • Dry storage: Nylon and other moisture-sensitive filaments can lose print quality after absorbing humidity. Use the drying and storage method specified for the product.
  • Build surface: Adhesion behavior differs by polymer and surface. Use the manufacturer’s recommended surface and preparation instead of copying a profile for another material.
  • Multi-material support: Soluble supports work only when the printer, slicer, support filament and model material have compatible temperatures and interfaces.
  • Resin workflow: Plan a container, washing method, curing method and waste-handling process before opening a resin bottle.

Common selection mistakes and how to recover

Choosing by the word “strong”

Strength without context hides stiffness, toughness, layer adhesion and fatigue behavior. Define the load and failure mode, then compare the relevant data-sheet properties.

Assuming a printer’s maximum temperature proves compatibility

A hot nozzle alone does not solve warping, bed adhesion, enclosure control, moisture or surface compatibility. Check the complete manufacturer profile and begin with a small test piece.

Ignoring moisture

If a hygroscopic filament produces popping, rough surfaces or inconsistent extrusion, stop treating it as a slicer-only problem. Dry and store it as directed, then retest with a fresh profile.

Using outdoor material without checking the environment

UV resistance does not answer every question about heat, chemicals, water, impact or long-term load. Match the material to the full exposure and inspect the finished part periodically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skipping resin post-processing and safety instructions

Uncured resin, wash liquids and contaminated waste require the controls specified by the product maker. Use the current safety data sheet rather than applying a blanket rule to every resin.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Write the part’s environment and failure consequences.
  2. Remove every material family the printer cannot support.
  3. Keep only candidates meeting the highest-priority heat, impact, chemical, UV or flexibility requirement.
  4. Remove candidates that exceed the machine’s enclosure, nozzle, drying, surface or resin-system capabilities.
  5. Compare post-processing, cost and expected failure rate.
  6. Print a small representative test, inspect it under the real load or environment when safe, and record the successful profile for future parts.

Bottom line for beginners

Start with PLA for straightforward indoor models and learning, move to PETG for many tougher practical parts, and consider ASA, ABS, nylon, PC or flexible materials only when their specific properties justify the added setup. Choose a compatible resin when fine detail and a smooth surface are the priority and you can manage washing, curing and safe handling. The right material is the one that meets the part’s real requirements while remaining within your printer’s process, hardware and operating limits.
