In a staff Q&A reported by Futurism on July 1, 2022, Mark Zuckerberg said Meta should raise performance expectations and that employees who felt the company was no longer for them could leave. He was quoted as saying, “Realistically, there are probably a bunch of people at the company who shouldn’t be here.” The comments signaled a tougher performance climate; the report did not establish that he announced a specific layoff plan.

What Zuckerberg said to Meta employees

Futurism reported that Zuckerberg made the remarks during a Q&A with Meta staff. The publication said Reuters had obtained recordings of the session; this account relies on Futurism’s reporting, not an independently reviewed recording or complete transcript.

Alongside the widely repeated “shouldn’t be here” line, Zuckerberg was quoted saying, “some of you might decide that this place isn’t for you, and that self-selection is OK with me.” In context, the remarks framed departures as a possible result of higher expectations and increased pressure, rather than describing a specific group of employees or naming individuals. Why he was talking about higher expectations

The report placed the comments against economic headwinds and Meta’s effort to operate with leaner teams. It also cited a memo from chief product officer Chris Cox calling for the company to “prioritize more ruthlessly” and to have “leaner, meaner, and better executing teams.” Those short phrases are reported excerpts from the memo, not a full quotation of a complete sentence. Futurism.

Zuckerberg was also quoted describing the outlook as potentially “one of the worst downturns that we’ve seen in recent history.” That was his characterization in the reported Q&A, not a measured economic ranking or a statistic.

Did Zuckerberg announce layoffs?

Not in the remarks as described by this report. It supports the conclusion that Zuckerberg was signaling higher performance expectations and accepting that some employees might decide to leave. It does not establish a precise number of planned job cuts, identify employees targeted for removal, or say what happened to any particular worker.

Why the date matters

This was a report about comments made in 2022, during a period of economic and company pressure. Its references to Meta’s metaverse work and hiring or employment cuts at other technology companies belong to that article’s 2022 context; they should not be read as a description of Meta’s circumstances in 2026. The report is evidence of what Zuckerberg was quoted saying then, not a statement of current Meta policy.
