Microsoft Edge has begun a staged transition away from Manifest V2 (MV2) extensions. Consumer notices started in August 2026, and Microsoft says it aims to complete the consumer rollout by the end of 2026. Edge will not switch off every MV2 extension on one universal day: warnings and default disabling are being introduced gradually, first in pre-release channels and then in Stable. Enterprise deprecation is expected to begin in early 2027.
If an extension you depend on is affected, check for a maintained Manifest V3 (MV3) version, compare its actual features and permissions, and test it before removing the old extension. An Edge policy can influence MV2 availability on managed Windows and macOS devices, but Microsoft does not describe that policy as a permanent consumer bypass.

What is changing in Edge?
Manifest versions are the technical rules that define how browser extensions declare permissions, run code and interact with web pages. MV2 is the older model. MV3 is its successor, which Microsoft describes as a more secure and performant foundation with privacy, security and performance improvements. Those are Microsoft’s stated reasons for the migration, not an independent performance test.
On August 7, 2026, the Microsoft Edge Team announced that consumer transition activity would begin that month. Some users will see notices in edge://extensions and on Edge Add-ons product pages. Microsoft says MV2 extensions will be gradually turned off by default and that affected users will be directed to recommended MV3 versions where available.

The rollout is channel-dependent. Microsoft says default disabling begins in Canary, Dev and Beta and broadens to Stable over the following months. The company’s stated goal is to complete the consumer transition by the end of 2026. That goal is not the same as a single date on which every MV2 extension stops working for every Edge installation.
When will Edge stop supporting Manifest V2?
There is no published per-version date at which all consumer MV2 extensions will cease working. Microsoft’s technical timeline, updated September 15, 2026, lists separate milestones rather than one cutoff.

Microsoft’s own wording captures the nature of the change: “Over the next few months, MV2 extensions will be gradually turned off by default.” A notice, a default-disabled extension and a complete removal of all MV2 functionality are separate stages, so the experience can differ by Edge channel, account and extension.
Will Edge disable my extensions?
It may disable an MV2 extension by default as the rollout reaches your channel and installation. Microsoft says users will be notified and shown recommended MV3 versions when those are available. A notice does not prove that a replacement has identical behavior, however. Store availability confirms that an item can be installed; it does not establish feature parity, quality or suitability for your particular workflow.

- A deprecation notice in
edge://extensions. - A warning on an extension’s Edge Add-ons product page.
- An extension that remains listed but is switched off by default.
- A recommendation for an MV3 listing from the same developer or another publisher.
- Different behavior between Canary, Dev, Beta and Stable because the rollout is staged.
Managed devices are excluded from the consumer rollout described in Microsoft’s August announcement. Organizations should still plan for the expected enterprise deprecation beginning in early 2027 rather than treating the current exclusion as permanent support.
How widespread is the migration?
Microsoft reported in August 2026 that 95% of the top MV2 extensions on the Edge Add-ons website had moved to MV3. It also said 58 MV2-based extensions had meaningful usage and that only three of those 58 lacked a publicly available MV3-based extension at the time of the announcement.
These figures describe Microsoft’s snapshot of the Edge Add-ons ecosystem. They are not a census of extensions loaded from other sources, and they do not demonstrate identical behavior for every extension. Microsoft said the vast majority across extension types transitioned with no loss of customer functionality, but that broad statement does not establish parity for each individual item. Extensions that perform content blocking, network filtering, custom scripting or other specialized tasks still need to be checked one by one.

- Identify the extension and its manifest generation. Open
edge://extensions, locate the item and read the warning. Note the exact extension name, publisher and functions you rely on. - Check the current listing. Open the extension’s page in Microsoft Edge Add-ons. Microsoft may link to a recommended MV3 version. Also check the developer’s current documentation or release notes for migration details.
- Write down required features. Separate essential behavior from conveniences. For a blocker or privacy tool, this might include filter-list support, per-site rules, cosmetic filtering, network request controls, keyboard commands or synchronization.
- Verify the candidate is actually MV3. Read the listing and developer information rather than assuming that a similarly named item is the successor. A different listing can have a different publisher, permission set or feature scope.
- Review permissions before installing. Edge and the Chrome Web Store show a permissions prompt during installation. Compare requested access with the functions you need, and do not approve a broader scope simply because the name looks familiar.
- Install and test before removing the old extension. Test the sites, accounts and workflows that matter to you. Check settings, imported lists, exceptions, sign-in state and synchronization. Keep a record of the old configuration until the replacement works.
- Remove or disable the old MV2 item when satisfied. Leaving two extensions that perform the same task can create conflicts, duplicate processing or confusing results.
Microsoft Support documents two installation sources: Microsoft Edge Add-ons and compatible extensions from the Chrome Web Store. In either store, find the item, review the permissions prompt and choose Add only if the access and behavior are acceptable.
What can I use instead of uBlock Origin?
There is no Microsoft-published, feature-by-feature equivalence list for a named ad blocker, and the cited Edge material does not establish that any particular replacement preserves every filtering feature. Treat this as a selection problem rather than assuming that the first MV3 result is identical.
Compare the functions you actually need
- Filtering model: Determine whether the candidate supports the types of lists, rules and request controls you use.
- Site controls: Check for per-site allowlists, blocklists and temporary disable options.
- Advanced behavior: Verify custom scripts, cosmetic rules, dynamic filtering or other specialist features individually.
- Data handling: Read the listing and privacy information to understand what permissions and data access are requested.
- Maintenance: Look for recent updates and current developer documentation. A migration label alone does not guarantee active maintenance.
- Browser and device fit: Confirm that the item is available for your Edge channel and that it works under any organizational restrictions.
If no candidate matches a critical feature, document the gap and ask the developer whether an MV3 implementation is planned. Do not describe a merely similar extension as a verified equivalent.

Can an Edge policy keep MV2 working?
Microsoft documents the ExtensionManifestV2Availability policy for Edge version 123 or later on Windows and macOS. The policy page lists four values:

The documentation does not cover Android or iOS for this policy. It also does not promise indefinite consumer support. Administrators should validate the policy against the Edge versions actually deployed, review Microsoft’s current enterprise guidance and coordinate with extension owners before depending on it.
For administrators
- Inventory MV2 extensions, including sideloaded and internally distributed items.
- Identify business-critical functions and their owners.
- Ask vendors or internal developers for MV3 status, permissions changes and migration dates.
- Test replacements in the same policies, proxy paths and security controls used in production.
- Use forced installation only where the documented policy and security review justify it; do not treat it as a general exemption from the deprecation plan.
Common problems and recovery steps
The replacement is installed but does not behave like the old extension
Compare settings and permissions first. MV3 migration can change how an extension handles requests, scripts, lists or background work. Recreate allowlists and site-specific rules, then test one affected site at a time. If a required function is absent, report the exact use case to the developer instead of assuming a hidden setting will restore it.
The extension disappears from the store
Do not install an unrelated item solely because its name is similar. Check the developer’s current distribution information and verify the publisher and permissions. Microsoft’s timeline leaves the date for accepting MV2 updates as not yet dated, so store status can change independently of the warning you saw.
Edge behaves differently on another channel
Compare Canary, Dev, Beta and Stable. Microsoft is broadening default disabling in stages, so an extension can remain active in one channel while being disabled in another. Record the Edge version and channel when reporting the issue.
A managed computer blocks the change
Contact your administrator rather than attempting an ad hoc workaround. The documented policy applies to specific desktop platforms and Edge versions, and an organization may intentionally disable extensions or restrict store sources.
What Edge users should expect next
Consumer MV2 support is being phased out rather than removed in one instant. Notices, recommendations and default disabling will arrive at different times, with pre-release channels leading Stable. Microsoft’s end-of-2026 target is a program goal, not a guarantee that every user will experience the same date. Enterprise deprecation is expected in early 2027, so organizations have a separate planning window but should begin migration work now.
The safest approach is to treat every recommendation as a starting point: verify the manifest generation, permissions, maintenance and the exact functions you depend on. Keep configuration backups, test replacements before deleting the original and involve administrators when the device is managed.
