The TCL P80 Ultra pairs a high-spec AMOLED screen with NXTPAPER viewing modes designed to make reading more paper-like. Its 6.83-inch, 120Hz display remains a vivid smartphone panel—not e-ink—while a dedicated NXTPAPER Key provides quick access to Paper and Max Ink modes. That combination is the phone’s most distinctive idea; the 3× periscope camera is its standout hardware feature.
What does NXTPAPER add to the P80 Ultra?
TCL describes NXTPAPER as display technology that reduces reflections and limits blue-light exposure, alongside adaptive brightness and color temperature. On the P80 Ultra, those ideas appear as viewing modes rather than a switch to a different screen type.

Paper Mode
Paper Mode applies adjustable, paper-like tones to the display. It is intended to make on-screen content feel less like a conventional bright, saturated phone interface, while retaining the flexibility of an AMOLED panel.
Max Ink Mode
Max Ink presents a monochrome, distraction-reducing layout intended for focused reading. In a brief hands-on at TCL’s IFA showcase on September 3, 2026, TechRadar’s Harry Padoan described the mode as useful for reading. That is an event impression, not a long-term assessment.

A dedicated NXTPAPER Key gives the modes a physical shortcut. TCL’s explanation of the technology and its claimed visual-comfort benefits is a manufacturer account, not clinical evidence that the display prevents or treats eye strain. The independent hands-on report likewise does not establish a health outcome.
Is the NXTPAPER screen e-ink?
No. TCL specifies a 6.83-inch AMOLED panel with 2772 × 1280 resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. It can show the colors, motion and brightness expected of a modern smartphone display; “paper-like” describes the viewing design and modes, not e-ink hardware.

TCL lists peak brightness of up to 3200 nits and color gamut of up to 100% DCI-P3. These are manufacturer specifications, with “up to” applying to the stated maxima. At the IFA showcase, Padoan reported that the display looked clear and vivid for drawing, video and scrolling. That brief observation is not a controlled screen test.

The display is part of a broader premium-positioned package. TCL lists a MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Elite platform, 8GB RAM with up to 16GB storage-based expansion, and storage up to 512GB. The expansion figure refers to virtual memory drawn from storage, not additional physical RAM.

The rear camera system combines a 50MP main camera, a 50MP 3× periscope telephoto camera with OIS and EIS, and an 8MP ultra-wide camera. The front camera is 32MP. TCL’s headline hardware distinction over the P80 Pro is that periscope telephoto camera.
TCL also specifies a 5800mAh battery and up to 45W wired charging. Maximum charging speed requires a compatible charger; the stated wattage does not mean every adapter will deliver it.

How does it compare with the P80 Pro and P80?
The P80 range separates the models through NXTPAPER features, camera hardware, battery capacity and storage. The figures below are from TCL’s IFA 2026 announcement; local configurations and prices should be checked in the market where you plan to buy.

If reading modes are central to your choice, the Ultra and Pro share the NXTPAPER AMOLED approach. The Ultra’s more concrete step up is the periscope camera; if you do not need that optical zoom feature, compare the Pro’s local price and availability rather than assuming the Ultra is automatically the better value. The standard P80 retains AMOLED but lacks the NXTPAPER features.

Where is the P80 Ultra available, and what is in the box?
TCL announced EU availability from September 3, 2026, in 256GB and 512GB configurations, each with 8GB RAM. The announced European package contains the phone, a cable and a TPU case; it does not include a power adapter. Availability and package contents may differ outside the EU, so check the local listing for the exact storage version, included accessories and price.
What should you make of the eye-comfort claims?
NXTPAPER is a design approach aimed at reducing reflections and blue-light exposure, but that description should not be confused with proof of a medical benefit. TCL’s March 2026 technology release makes broader claims about its NXTPAPER technology, including blue-light reduction and circular polarization. Those are company claims, and the cited material does not establish that the P80 Ultra has been independently measured to the same figures or that using it prevents eyestrain.
The practical case for the screen is narrower and clearer: it offers ordinary AMOLED color and responsiveness alongside modes intended to make certain tasks, particularly reading, feel calmer or less distracting. Whether those modes feel better to you is a personal preference, not a clinical result.
