Its rarity claim does not come from a special Hulk accessory, a unique Spider-Man sculpt, or a Hulk figure packed in the box. It comes from the card-back artwork and date associated with one 1978 U.S. carded release. Marvel repeatedly revised Hulk’s character design, and Mego changed the Hulk images used on package backs. ComicBook.com reported in October 2026 that the specific 1978 Spider-Man carded example had only three graded examples, but that figure is a reported grading population—not proof that only three survive. No production ledger, complete census, or current sale price for this exact combination has been established.
The direct answer: the Hulk connection is in the packaging
When collectors ask why a Mego Spider-Man figure came on a Hulk card, they are usually trying to identify a particular card-back variation. The toy itself remains Spider-Man: an approximately 8-inch World’s Greatest Super-Heroes figure from Mego’s long-running Marvel line. The Hulk appears in the package artwork because the reverse side of the card used character illustrations from the broader Marvel assortment.

For the variant discussed in the recent rarity story, the important clues are a 1978 date on the U.S. card and a crouching Hulk shown in purple pants on the back. Marvel’s Hulk style guide changed repeatedly, so Mego updated the character images used in its packaging. That artwork change created a collectible packaging variant. It did not create a Spider-Man with a Hulk-specific body, accessory, or factory designation.
ComicBook.com reported that only three graded versions of this particular 1978 example were known when its October 2026 article was published. Treat that as an attributed report about graded submissions. It does not establish the number of loose, ungraded, damaged, unopened, or privately held examples.

What the Mego Spider-Man release actually is
An 8-inch figure in the World’s Greatest Super-Heroes line
Mego Museum dates Spider-Man’s Mego debut to fall 1973 and records production continuing through 1982. The line therefore spans nearly a decade, during which Mego used different factories and made numerous running changes. A figure that looks broadly like another Spider-Man can still be paired with a different card, date, regional distributor marking, costume treatment, or manufacturing detail.
The term “Mego Spider-Man” covers more than one release. Collectors should record the figure and the packaging as separate identification layers: first determine which Spider-Man body and costume variation is present, then identify the exact card front, card back, date, and distributor or regional information. A carded example can be rare because of that pairing even when the loose figure is relatively familiar.
Running changes are part of the history
Mego Museum’s gallery documents extensive Spider-Man variants linked to the character’s long production run and changing production facilities. One example is the Circle Suit variation, described as an early attempt to silk-screen the Spider-Man logo that was quickly corrected. Such changes matter because two figures sold under the same character name may show different logo treatment, paint application, fabric construction, or factory characteristics.

How Hulk artwork changed the Spider-Man cards
The 1975 U.S. card
Mego Museum shows a U.S. Spider-Man card dated 1975. The front artwork is part of the packaging record collectors use to separate releases. The museum’s gallery also notes that the 1975 and 1978 U.S. Spider-Man cards use identical front artwork apart from the printed date. That means the date is not a minor detail: it is one of the practical ways to distinguish otherwise similar fronts.
The reported 1978 U.S. card
The rarity narrative centers on the 1978 U.S. card. ComicBook.com attributes the packaging change to Marvel’s evolving Hulk designs and describes the card-back image as a crouching Hulk wearing purple pants. The source presents this as an explanation of artwork history, not as a surviving Mego factory memo or a documented production-count report.
To identify a candidate, inspect the printed date and the complete reverse artwork rather than relying on a seller’s title. Photograph the card back straight-on, including the edges and any distributor text. A cropped image can hide the date, alter the apparent colors, or omit markings that separate the 1978 U.S. release from another issue.

The separate 1979 Parkdale Novelty card
Mego Museum documents a Parkdale Novelty card variant dated 1979. Its front shows only Spider-Man and the Incredible Hulk. This is a distinct documented release, not an interchangeable name for the reported 1978 U.S. card. A 1979 Parkdale example may be interesting and less commonly encountered, but its date, distributor context, and artwork should be recorded accurately.

Do not relabel a 1979 Parkdale card as the 1978 U.S. rarity simply because both include Spider-Man and Hulk imagery. The card date and regional or distributor identification are essential parts of the description.

| 1979 Parkdale Novelty card | 1979 date; front shows Spider-Man and the Incredible Hulk; Parkdale Novelty identification | Mego Museum documents it as a distinct regional or distributor variant | Do not merge it with the 1978 U.S. card because both feature Hulk-related imagery |
What “only three graded versions” does—and does not—tell you
It is a report about grading submissions
A third-party grading population counts items submitted to that grading service or tracked in the source’s cited record. ComicBook.com’s October 2026 wording concerns three graded versions of the specific 1978 example. That is useful evidence that the carded variant is seldom seen in graded form, but it is narrower than a census of every surviving toy.
It is not a production number
The available record does not state how many 1978 cards Mego printed, how many figures were packed on them, or how many remain today. It also does not count ungraded examples, carded toys whose holders were never submitted, loose figures separated from cards, or damaged packages. Mego Museum confirms multiple cards and running changes but does not publish a population count for this exact card-and-figure combination.

A low graded population can reflect genuine scarcity, low submission rates, fragile packaging, or all three. Carded toys are vulnerable to crushed bubbles, detached bubbles, fading, creases, and moisture damage, so owners may keep them raw rather than pay for grading. Conversely, a grading database can contain duplicate submissions or resubmissions unless its counting method is clear. Describe the item as “reported in three graded examples” rather than “only three exist.”

How to identify a candidate example step by step
- Confirm the character and scale. Verify that the item is the Mego World’s Greatest Super-Heroes Spider-Man figure, approximately 8 inches tall, rather than a 12-inch Mego Marvel figure or a later reproduction.
- Record the figure details. Photograph the head, suit, web pattern, chest emblem, hands, boots, and any visible logo treatment. Note whether the figure is sealed, opened but carded, or loose.
- Read the card date. Use a high-resolution image or direct inspection to distinguish 1975, 1978, and 1979. Do not infer the date from a listing title.
- Inspect the entire card back. Look for the Hulk pose, pants color, surrounding character art, copy, logos, and layout. The reported 1978 clue is a crouching Hulk in purple pants, but the complete design matters more than one color viewed in isolation.
- Check regional or distributor markings. Determine whether the card identifies a U.S. release or Parkdale Novelty. Record every printed name exactly as it appears.
- Compare the front and back as a pair. A 1978 date with a mismatched or replaced card back is not equivalent to an intact factory presentation. Look for trimming, rebacking, color mismatch, or adhesive residue.
- Document condition before handling. Photograph all corners, the bubble perimeter, staple or hanger area, and any tears. These images preserve evidence if the package is later submitted for grading.
Condition factors that can change the collectible’s significance
Card condition
Inspect the front and reverse for corner blunting, creases, writing, price stickers, discoloration, stains, sun fading, and edge separation. A clear date and intact artwork are especially important for this identification because the 1975 and 1978 U.S. fronts are otherwise described as identical apart from the date.
Bubble and seal
Check whether the bubble is firmly attached around its perimeter, whether it is yellowed or cracked, and whether the seal has been lifted and reattached. A detached bubble can reduce confidence that the figure and card remained together from manufacture. Record dents and compression even if the figure itself is clean.
Figure completeness
Verify the suit, body, hands, boots, and any original accessories shown in the package. A sealed package offers the strongest evidence of the original pairing, while an opened card requires closer examination for swapped figures or replacement parts. Do not assume that a familiar loose Spider-Man proves the rarity of the card.
Third-party grading
Grading can make a rare package easier to describe and compare, but a slab does not create provenance or prove a production total. Confirm which company graded the item, what was graded—the card, bubble, figure, or all three—and whether the population number counts unique pieces or submissions. The reported count of three should be attributed to ComicBook.com rather than treated as a universal census.

What is known about value
No current market value for the exact 1978 carded Spider-Man variant was established. The price depends on exact card identification, card and bubble integrity, figure completeness, grade, and the quality of comparable sales. A seller’s asking price is not a completed transaction, and a generic Mego Spider-Man sale cannot establish the value of this particular card-back combination.
Heritage Auctions’ catalog entry reviewed for this subject describes different, larger 12-inch Spider-Man and Hulk figures from 1977–78. Those lots are not comparable to the 8-inch Spider-Man carded item and should not be used as a direct price benchmark. Mego Museum’s FAQ points collectors toward reference books and advises comparing multiple price guides rather than relying on one source.
A defensible way to estimate a price
- Match the exact card date, artwork, and distributor before looking at prices.
- Separate sealed, opened-card, and loose examples.
- Use completed sales for the same 8-inch carded variant whenever possible.
- Adjust for card creases, bubble damage, fading, missing parts, and grading scope.
- Report the date and condition of each comparable sale; do not average unrelated 12-inch or later releases.
Common misidentifications and how to avoid them
Calling every Spider-Man/Hulk card a 1978 rarity
The 1979 Parkdale Novelty card is documented separately. Its Spider-Man-and-Hulk front does not make it the 1978 U.S. card.
Assuming the Hulk is an included accessory
The Hulk reference is card artwork. The rarity story is about packaging, not a Spider-Man set that contains a Hulk figure.
Using the three-graded figure as a survival total
Three graded examples indicate a small reported graded population. They do not count ungraded or undiscovered pieces and do not reveal Mego’s original production quantity.
Using a large-figure auction as a comparison
A 12-inch 1977–78 lot is a different product. Scale, packaging, construction, and market history must match before a sale can serve as evidence.
What collectors should record in a catalog or listing
- “Mego World’s Greatest Super-Heroes Spider-Man,” with the approximate 8-inch scale.
- Printed card date: 1975, 1978, or 1979, exactly as shown.
- U.S. or Parkdale Novelty identification and any other regional markings.
- Front and back artwork description, including the Hulk pose and clothing color when visible.
- Sealed, opened-card, or loose status.
- Card, bubble, and figure condition, with photographs of defects.
- Third-party grader and grade, if applicable.
- A qualification that the three-example population is a ComicBook.com report from October 2026, not a verified total census.
Bottom line
The Mego Spider-Man is considered rare in this discussion because a specific 1978 U.S. carded presentation is seldom documented in graded form, with ComicBook.com reporting three graded examples. The Hulk matters because Marvel’s changing Hulk artwork drove packaging revisions, including the card-back image used with Spider-Man. Mego Museum’s records show a broader history of Spider-Man production from 1973 through 1982, multiple running changes, separate 1975 and 1978 U.S. cards, and a distinct 1979 Parkdale Novelty card. Identify the date, artwork, distributor, figure, and condition together; until a production record, full census, and exact-variant sales are available, describe the item as a scarce documented packaging variant rather than claiming that only three examples exist.
