Short answer: AUD/USD rises when the Australian dollar gains value relative to the US dollar, when the US dollar weakens, or both. It falls for the opposite reasons. The main influences are the expected return on Australian assets compared with US assets, Australia’s export prices and terms of trade, trade and investment flows, broad US-dollar movements, and global risk appetite. These forces interact, and none provides a reliable one-step forecast for the next move.
How to read the AUD/USD exchange rate
AUD/USD is quoted as US dollars per Australian dollar. If the rate is 0.66, one Australian dollar buys 66 US cents. If it rises to 0.68, the Australian dollar has appreciated against the US dollar. If it falls to 0.64, the Australian dollar has depreciated.

This is a relative price, not a score assigned only to Australia. A higher quote can result from stronger Australian prospects, a weaker US dollar, or simultaneous moves on both sides. Conversely, a fall can reflect Australian weakness, US-dollar strength, or both. Any explanation of a particular day’s move should identify which side changed.

Interest-rate differences and expected returns
Why the comparison matters
Investors compare the return they expect from Australian assets with the return from US and other major-market assets. Australian government bonds, bank deposits and other investments may look more attractive when Australian interest rates are expected to be higher relative to US rates, provided the additional currency and credit risks are acceptable. To buy those assets, overseas investors may need Australian dollars, supporting AUD/USD.

The relevant comparison is forward-looking. Markets react to expected policy paths, inflation and growth, not only to the rate currently displayed by either central bank. A decision that was widely anticipated may produce little movement, while a surprise change in the expected path can move the exchange rate quickly.
How central-bank decisions are transmitted
The Reserve Bank of Australia describes the interest-rate differential as a key driver of demand for Australian dollars and investment capital flows. Its explainer states: “Because the interest rate differential is a key driver of exchange rates, the RBA’s monetary policy decisions play a key role in influencing the exchange rate.”
That does not mean an RBA rate increase automatically makes the dollar rise. The Federal Reserve may tighten at the same time, leaving the gap unchanged. Investors may also have priced the RBA move in advance, or they may interpret it as evidence of weaker growth. Inflation expectations, fiscal policy, commodity income and perceived risk can offset the effect of a wider rate gap.
Yields, risk and currency hedging
A higher yield is not free money. An investor also considers the chance that the AUD will fall and reduce the return in US-dollar terms. When uncertainty rises, investors may demand a larger risk premium before holding Australian assets. The exchange rate therefore reflects expected returns after risk, not a simple ranking of headline policy rates.
Terms of trade, commodities and export demand
What the terms of trade measure
The terms of trade compare the prices a country receives for its exports with the prices it pays for imports. An improvement means export prices have risen relative to import prices. For Australia, that can increase national income and the foreign currency receipts that exporters convert into AUD.

Australia exports commodities including iron ore, natural gas and agricultural products. A rise in those prices can improve export earnings, encourage investment in mines, energy and related infrastructure, and increase demand for Australian dollars. A deterioration can work in the other direction. The relationship is not constant because interest-rate expectations, China and global growth, risk sentiment and the US dollar can dominate at different times.
The mining-boom example
The RBA records that commodity prices rose sharply from the mid-2000s through 2013 during the mining investment boom, while the Australian dollar reached about US$1.10 in 2011. That is a historical example, not a current quotation and not proof that commodity prices alone set the exchange rate. It illustrates how export prices, investment inflows and expectations can reinforce one another during a particular period.

A single-day move in iron ore or natural gas does not translate mechanically into AUD/USD. The market may already have anticipated the change, the price may affect Australia with a lag, or the US dollar may be moving more strongly for unrelated reasons. Analysts should examine the overall export basket and the export-to-import price ratio rather than treating one commodity as a complete explanation.
The US-dollar side of the pair
US policy and economic expectations
US employment, inflation, growth and Federal Reserve communications affect the expected return on dollar assets. If traders expect higher US rates or stronger US growth, demand for USD can rise and AUD/USD can fall even when Australian data have not changed. A softer US outlook can weaken USD and lift the pair without any new Australian strength.
The Federal Reserve’s official FAQ says: “Neither the U.S. Treasury nor the Federal Reserve targets a level for the exchange rate.” This means policy decisions are aimed at broader economic objectives rather than maintaining a particular AUD/USD or dollar index level.

Check the dollar broadly
To tell whether a move is Australia-specific, compare the US dollar with several major currencies. If USD is gaining broadly after a US data release, the fall in AUD/USD may mostly be a dollar story. If AUD is rising against multiple currencies while USD is stable, Australian factors are more likely to be central.
Trade, investment flows and official operations
Everyday trade flows
Foreign buyers of Australian iron ore, energy, food or services may need AUD to pay suppliers. Australian importers sell AUD to obtain foreign currency for machinery, fuel, technology and other goods. These transactions create ongoing supply and demand, although companies often hedge future payments rather than exchanging the full amount immediately.
Capital flows
Foreign purchases of Australian bonds, shares, property or business projects can bring AUD demand. Australian investors buying overseas assets create AUD supply. The size and direction of these flows depend on expected returns, risk, regulation and funding conditions, so a strong trade surplus does not guarantee a rising currency if capital is leaving at the same time.
What intervention means
The RBA describes foreign-exchange intervention as direct purchases or sales of Australian dollars that create demand or supply in the market. Mentioning intervention does not imply that authorities routinely defend a chosen AUD/USD level. Any claim about an operation needs a dated official announcement; otherwise, treat the market as being driven mainly by private trade and financial flows.
Risk appetite, growth and inflation expectations
The Australian dollar is often treated as a more growth-sensitive currency because Australia is exposed to global trade and commodity cycles. During a broad risk-off episode, investors may prefer highly liquid defensive assets and demand a higher risk premium for Australian-dollar assets. That tendency can push AUD/USD lower. When confidence improves, the pressure can reverse.

Risk appetite is not a rule. A risk-off session accompanied by unexpectedly high Australian inflation could still produce a stronger AUD if markets sharply raise expected Australian rates. Likewise, a positive commodity shock may fail to lift AUD if investors are worried about global recession. The RBA identifies global risk sentiment, relative risk premia, expected growth and inflation as interacting influences.

Markets move before announcements
Exchange rates respond to changes in expectations. If traders expect an RBA decision, a US jobs report or a commodity-price move, AUD/USD may adjust before the official release. The announcement then matters only to the extent that it differs from what was priced in.
One event can have competing effects
A strong Australian economic report might raise expected RBA rates, supporting AUD, while also lifting global risk aversion if it suggests inflation will stay high. A US rate increase might strengthen USD directly but signal confidence in US growth, which can improve global risk sentiment and support AUD. The net move depends on which interpretation dominates.
Relative growth and inflation
Investors continuously revise estimates for Australian, Chinese, US and global growth. Inflation changes the expected path of interest rates and the real value of future returns. These revisions can overwhelm an older relationship between a commodity and the exchange rate.
How to explain a particular AUD/USD move
For a news event or historical episode, work through the following sequence rather than assigning the move to one headline:
Best Value
- Confirm the direction. A rising AUD/USD means AUD strengthened against USD; a falling quote means the reverse.
- Compare policy expectations. Ask whether expected Australian returns changed relative to expected US returns. Look at the entire expected path, not only the latest cash-rate decision.
- Check export conditions. Determine whether commodity export prices or the broader terms of trade improved or deteriorated.
- Measure the USD-wide move. If USD moved against several currencies, separate that effect from Australia-specific news.
- Assess risk and growth pricing. Identify any shift toward or away from risk, or a revision to Australian, Chinese, US or global growth expectations.
- Check timing. Decide what was already anticipated and what genuinely surprised the market.
- Describe competing forces. If rates support AUD but a risk-off move pressures it, explain the conflict instead of claiming a single mechanical cause.
Why the relationships change over time
The Reserve Bank of Australia cautions that “While it is possible to identify some key determinants of the exchange rate, it is important to note that their impact can vary over time.” A factor that dominated during the mining investment boom may be less important during a period of global financial stress or unusually large US policy moves.
Historical exchange-rate models have had mixed success. The market incorporates expectations, hedging, leverage and changing risk premiums that are difficult to observe in real time. Consequently, these drivers are useful for explaining scenarios, not for promising the next daily, weekly or monthly direction.
Common mistakes when interpreting AUD/USD
- Reading the quote backwards: AUD/USD is USD per AUD, so a higher number means a stronger AUD relative to USD.
- Watching only the RBA: The Federal Reserve and US data can move the denominator just as powerfully.
- Treating commodities as a complete model: Export prices work through the terms of trade, income and investment, while other forces can offset them.
- Assuming a rate rise guarantees appreciation: The decision may be priced in, matched by the Fed or interpreted as a sign of economic weakness.
- Confusing correlation with a rule: Historical associations vary by period and do not establish a dependable short-term forecast.
- Using an undated price as evidence: Market levels, policy expectations, commodity prices and risk sentiment change continually and require a date and context.
A practical framework for readers
When you see AUD/USD rising or falling, ask four questions: Are expected Australian returns changing relative to US returns? Are Australia’s export prices and terms of trade improving or deteriorating? Is the US dollar moving broadly? Has global risk appetite shifted? Then check whether the move was a surprise or had already been anticipated.
That framework explains the principal channels without pretending that currencies follow a fixed formula. It is an educational way to interpret economic news, not a trading signal or a forecast.
