The PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition is valuable because Sony made only 12,300 worldwide, numbered every console, and wrapped the hardware in a gray design that deliberately recalls the first PlayStation. The matching accessories and commemorative packaging make it a complete collectible rather than merely a standard PS4 in a different color.
Those features create collector demand, but they do not establish one guaranteed price. Recent completed-sale records show a substantial premium over the original launch price, while condition, completeness, region, packaging and whether a listing is a completed sale can change the result considerably.

The short answer: scarcity, nostalgia and completeness
Sony Computer Entertainment introduced the PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition in 2014 as a limited version of the 500GB CUH-1100A A20 Series PS4. Its value comes from four connected facts:
- Production was capped at 12,300 units worldwide.
- Each console has a numbered plate from 1 through 12,300.
- The console, controller and included accessories use the original PlayStation’s gray color and commemorative styling.
- The bundle and its box were designed as anniversary memorabilia, not just ordinary retail packaging.
The production total is itself a piece of PlayStation history: Sony chose 12,300 to reflect December 3, 1994, the launch date of the original PlayStation. A small global supply, an easily recognizable design and a direct connection to the company’s first console give collectors reasons to seek the edition even when they already own a technically similar PS4.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Scarcity explains why demand can be high; it does not dictate what a particular example is worth. A sealed, complete unit with an intact box is a different collectible from an opened console missing its camera or stand. The evidence available for this edition supports a range of transaction examples, not a universal appraisal formula.
What exactly is the 20th Anniversary Edition?
A specifically identified model
Sony identifies the anniversary console as the CUH-1100A A20 Series, with 500GB of storage. Identification matters because a regular PS4 with a gray shell, a replacement controller or a reproduction box is not automatically the anniversary edition.
The complete original bundle
Sony’s package description lists the gray PS4, a matching gray DUALSHOCK 4 controller, a gray PlayStation Camera, a gray vertical stand and a gray mono headset. It also includes the power cord, HDMI cable, USB cable and printed materials. The console and controller carry anniversary details, and the box has commemorative artwork.

Missing accessories do not erase the identity of the console, but they reduce the appeal of a set being sold as a complete original bundle. A buyer should ask for photographs of every included component rather than relying on a title that says “anniversary PS4.”
Why the 12,300-unit limit matters
Limited supply was intentional
Sony announced a worldwide limit of 12,300 units. This was not an estimate of how many happened to survive; it was the planned production quantity. The number deliberately mirrors the original PlayStation’s December 3 launch date, giving the limitation a story that collectors can understand and repeat.

That combination is more persuasive than an unspecified “limited edition” label. A documented cap lets buyers compare the edition with the enormous supply of ordinary PS4 systems. The numbered plate also makes each unit legible as part of a finite series.
Numbering creates identity, not a guaranteed premium
Every console carries a plate numbered from 1 to 12,300. Numbering helps establish that a unit belongs to the limited run and gives an owner a specific object to document. However, the available sales evidence does not show a consistent, measurable premium for one serial number over another. The presence of a number is important; a particular number is not proven to have a fixed extra value.
How the design turns a PS4 into a keepsake
Original Gray links the console to 1994
The anniversary hardware uses the original PlayStation’s gray color rather than the standard appearance associated with later PS4 models. That color is a visual shortcut to the first generation: someone who recognizes the original system can identify the tribute from across a room.
The same treatment extends to the controller and accessories. A matching gray camera, stand and headset make the set look intentional when displayed together. Commemorative markings on the body and controller reinforce that this is a historical celebration, not a cosmetic aftermarket modification.
Packaging is part of the collectible
The box has anniversary-specific design, and printed materials are included in Sony’s package outline. For collectors, packaging protects the object, documents its original presentation and helps distinguish a complete set from a console assembled from separate parts. A crushed, heavily marked or incomplete box can therefore matter even when the console itself works normally.

Original launch prices versus later sales
Sony’s 2014 recommended retail prices provide a baseline, not a current valuation. They were:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Region | 2014 recommended retail price | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| North America | US$499 | Original 2014 launch recommendation |
| Europe | €499 | Original 2014 launch recommendation |
| Japan | ¥49,980 plus tax | Original 2014 launch recommendation, before applicable tax |
A later sale above those figures reflects secondary-market demand, not a change to Sony’s original price. Currency conversion, regional packaging and local taxes also make direct comparisons between markets unreliable without matching the region and transaction date.
What recent transaction evidence shows
Selected PriceCharting-indexed records of reported eBay completed sales illustrate the premium, while also showing why a single number would be misleading:
| Condition label | Reported amount | Date | What it demonstrates |
|---|---|---|---|
| CIB | $1,200 | May 2026 | A complete-in-box example sold well above the US$499 North American launch price. |
| CIB | $1,499.99 | May 2026 | Another complete-in-box record reached a higher result in the same month. |
| Sealed | $2,499 | December 2025 | A sealed example commanded more than the cited CIB records. |
These are selected records, not a market-wide median, formal appraisal or promise that every complete or sealed unit will sell for the same amount. “CIB” means complete in box in the listing record, but buyers should still verify exactly which accessories and papers were present. A seller’s asking price is not evidence of what someone actually paid.

- Confirm the model designation. Look for the CUH-1100A A20 Series identification associated with the 500GB anniversary PS4.
- Inspect the numbered front plate. The edition should carry a visible number from 1 through 12,300. Ask for a clear photograph rather than accepting an unreadable image.
- Check the color and markings. The console and controller should use the Original Gray design and show the anniversary details described by Sony.
- Match the accessories. Compare the listing with the original bundle: gray DUALSHOCK 4, gray PlayStation Camera, gray vertical stand, gray mono headset, power cord, HDMI cable, USB cable and printed materials.
- Examine the box. Anniversary packaging should correspond to the console and should not be represented as an original box if it is a replacement.
- Record the region and serial information. Regional version, visible serial details and documentation help a buyer compare like with like and preserve provenance.
These checks establish whether the listing resembles the documented edition. They do not certify that every component is original or that the electronics are functional; a buyer should also request powered-on photographs or an in-person test when practical.
Which condition factors change value?
Sealed versus opened
A factory-sealed package preserves the original presentation and usually attracts the strongest collector interest. The $2,499 December 2025 sealed record is evidence of that demand, but it is one dated transaction rather than a guaranteed sealed-unit price. Opening a package can reduce its appeal to a preservation-focused collector, even if the console remains unused.
Complete versus missing parts
A complete bundle should be compared with another complete bundle. Missing camera, stand, headset, controller, cables, printed materials or the original box means the item is not equivalent to a complete-in-box listing. Replacement parts may restore function without restoring collectible completeness.
Condition of the console, controller and box
Collectors can distinguish between an unused set, a lightly handled display piece and a heavily used system. Scratches, yellowing, damaged ports, controller wear, torn seals, odors and water damage can affect confidence. Box condition deserves its own inspection because a clean console inside a badly damaged box is not the same presentation as a clean, intact set.

Regional versions may differ in packaging, power requirements and market demand. Keep photographs of the numbered plate, model label, box labels and accessories; this record helps with insurance, resale and disputes.

Did the No. 00001 console really sell for about $129,000?
No. 00001 became famous because a Japanese charity auction in 2015 reached a top bid of ¥15,135,000, which TIME reported at the time as approximately $129,000. That figure was a bid, not a completed sale.
Sony subsequently said the transaction failed and that the console would not be sold. The amount therefore cannot be used as a normal market price or as proof that every low-numbered anniversary PS4 is worth six figures. It is best understood as an extraordinary auction moment involving the first-numbered unit and a charity context.
Is a low serial number worth more?
A low number may be more interesting to a particular collector, especially when it has a documented story. The first-numbered unit received unusual attention because of the charity auction. But the available transaction records do not establish a consistent premium for serial numbers, and they do not show that numbers such as 00002, 00100 or 12300 command a predictable amount above other units.
If a seller claims that a specific number automatically adds a fixed percentage, treat that as an opinion unless the seller can provide comparable completed sales for the same region and condition. The number should be one factor in documentation, not a substitute for checking the console and bundle.
A practical method for estimating an asking price
An owner preparing to sell can make the comparison more defensible by following a fixed sequence:
- Inventory the set. List the console, controller, camera, stand, headset, cables, printed materials and box. Mark anything missing, substituted or damaged.
- Document identity. Photograph the model designation, numbered plate, serial information, commemorative markings and every box label.
- Classify the condition. Separate sealed, opened unused, lightly used and heavily used rather than using “like new” for every state.
- Search completed sales, not just listings. Compare records with the same region, condition label and completeness. Record the sale date because collector prices can move.
- Separate the hardware from the story. A famous number, signature or ownership history may interest a buyer, but it should not be treated as a measured premium without comparable transactions.
- Set expectations around the evidence. Use comparable sales as a range for negotiation, not as a promise that the unit will sell at the highest observed amount.
For a high-value transaction, preserve the original photographs, disclose defects and use a payment and shipping method that provides an inspection and dispute process. A buyer who cannot verify the numbered plate or included accessories may discount the offer to compensate for uncertainty.
Common mistakes that lead to bad valuations
- Using the ¥15,135,000 bid as a sale price. The auction transaction failed, so the bid is not a realized market result.
- Confusing an asking price with a completed sale. An unsold listing shows what a seller hopes to receive, not what the market accepted.
- Ignoring completeness. A console-only listing should not be compared with a sealed or complete-in-box bundle.
- Assuming every gray PS4 is the anniversary model. Verify the CUH-1100A A20 Series designation, numbered plate and commemorative details.
- Assigning an automatic serial-number premium. No consistent premium for a particular number is established by the available examples.
- Comparing different regions without adjustment. Currency, packaging and original market can affect buyer expectations.
- Calling a small sample an appraisal. Three selected records can demonstrate that a premium exists, but they cannot define every condition or market.
Why the edition remains collectible
The 20th Anniversary PS4 works as a collectible because its story is visible in the object itself. The numbered production run supplies scarcity; Original Gray connects it to the 1994 launch; the matching accessories make the set display-ready; and the commemorative box preserves the context. Those elements reinforce one another rather than relying on a single decorative badge.
The strongest evidence supports a measured conclusion: the edition can sell well above its original US$499 North American launch price, and sealed or complete examples have recently produced four-figure sales. The exact value of an individual console still depends on the evidence a buyer can verify—condition, completeness, region, packaging, serial visibility and an actual completed transaction.
