The machine must perceive unfamiliar objects, plan contact-rich actions, stay balanced while carrying loads, work safely near people, recover from mistakes, run long enough to be useful, and remain serviceable when conditions change. These requirements interact: a weakness in any one can stop the whole task.
A polished demonstration therefore proves less than a dependable deployment. The practical question is whether a particular robot can complete a defined task at an acceptable success and recovery rate, for the required runtime and payload, in the actual environment, with evidence that its safety, cybersecurity, maintenance and cost are manageable.

The core problem is system integration
Walking, seeing, grasping, manipulating, navigating and responding to people are often developed as separate capabilities. A workplace combines them continuously. A robot may need to open a door, step over an uneven threshold, identify the correct item behind an occlusion, adjust its grip when the object slips, and stop safely when a person enters its path. Each event changes the next one.
Open-world manipulation is especially demanding. Homes, factories and worksites contain objects, fixtures and layouts that were not present in training data. Contact can produce many outcomes: a drawer may bind, a flexible package may deform, or a tool may be placed at a slightly different angle. A system that succeeds only when every pose and object is prearranged has demonstrated choreography, not general deployment readiness.

Perception and manipulation fail outside rehearsed conditions
Unfamiliar objects and changing layouts
Humanoid hands must estimate geometry, material, friction and the consequences of contact while the robot is moving. Visual sensors can be blocked by the robot’s own arms, a worker or a shelf. Lighting, dust and reflective surfaces can alter what the cameras see. The robot must also decide when it lacks enough information and seek another view or ask for help rather than making a dangerous guess.
A concrete adaptation result
Haoyu Xiong’s 2024 Carnegie Mellon University thesis studied mobile manipulation of doors, cabinets, drawers and refrigerators instead of limiting evaluation to pick-and-place. The adaptive system was tested on 20 articulated objects across four campus buildings. With less than an hour of online learning per object, reported success rose from 50% after behavior-cloning pretraining to 95% after online adaptation. That is an important demonstration of the value of adapting at the site, but it is a result for that system, object set and protocol—not a guarantee of general-purpose humanoid performance.
For deployment, the relevant measurement is not only first-attempt success. Teams should record recovery rate, time to recover, human interventions, damage, and whether the robot can recognize an unsafe or unrecoverable state. A high average success rate can still be unacceptable if failures halt a production line or require a specialist every few minutes.

Simulation helps, but the reality gap remains
Simulation makes it possible to generate many trials without wearing out hardware or endangering people. It is useful for learning locomotion, testing control policies and exploring rare events. However, a simulator approximates friction, compliance, sensor noise, latency, motor behavior and the disorder of a physical site.

A 2026 Annual Reviews survey describes this mismatch as the “reality gap,” which continues to hinder transfer from simulated training to real environments. The survey discusses domain randomization, real-to-sim transfer, state and action abstractions, and sim-real co-training. These methods can reduce the gap, but they do not eliminate the need for physical validation. A policy that succeeds thousands of times in simulation may still fail when a cable snags, a wheel of a cart rolls unexpectedly or a person moves an object during the task.
Effective commissioning therefore uses simulation as a filter, followed by progressively harder tests on the actual robot: known objects in a fixed layout, controlled variation, then normal operations with unannounced disturbances. Metrics from the physical site—not simulated success alone—should determine whether the next stage is allowed.
Mobility, batteries and payload constrain useful work
Balance is part of every manipulation task
A biped must maintain balance while its footholds, carried load and surroundings change. Reaching far from the body, turning with an object, stepping around a person or recovering from a push all consume stability margin. Construction sites add uneven ground, temporary routes, hazards and layouts that change as work progresses. A robot can have capable arms yet be unable to use them reliably because the base cannot reach or hold the required position.
Runtime is configuration-specific
A 2025 Scientific Reports review of humanoid platforms for construction states that most commercial and research systems operate for roughly 1–2 hours per charge, use 1.5–3.0 kWh battery packs and rarely exceed an effective payload of 20–25 kg. These are review-level generalizations, not specifications for every model.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
Fraunhofer IPA provides a more specific, configuration-dependent example. In its benchmark of a Unitree G1 EDU-4 fitted with Dex3-1 three-finger hands and firmware 1.04, delivered in May 2025, maximum operating time was reported as 2 hours 49 minutes while standing still and 1 hour 49 minutes in a typical standing-and-walking scenario. The latter figure is the one that matters for a mobile task; it should not be presented as a universal runtime for humanoids.
Charging or battery changes can remove a machine from service during a shift. A deployment calculation should include charging time, swap logistics, reduced speed when the battery is low, and the energy used by computing and safety systems, not just the headline capacity.
Human safety has to be demonstrated under failure
Predictable behavior near people
A robot sharing space with workers needs validated obstacle detection, force limitation, controlled stopping, safe behavior after a sensor or communication fault, and a way to prevent unexpected restart. Safety cannot be inferred from a slow-motion video or from the fact that a test was successful once. It must be measured for the intended speed, payload, tools, surfaces and human proximity.
Fraunhofer IPA’s six-part evaluation covers functional safety and cybersecurity as well as technical capabilities, complex tasks, cleanroom suitability and energy efficiency. In the cited Unitree configuration, collision forces above 500 newtons were possible. Fraunhofer says this exceeded the pain thresholds permitted by the referenced standard. The finding applies to that tested setup and conditions; it is not a statement about every humanoid.

Cybersecurity is a physical-safety issue
The same Fraunhofer assessment reported discovery of a critical Bluetooth vulnerability that allowed remote control. The page says the issue has since been resolved, so it should be treated as a historical finding in the tested software, not as an unresolved present vulnerability. Nevertheless, the incident illustrates why wireless interfaces, update mechanisms, authentication, network segmentation and audit logs belong in a robot safety case. A machine that can be redirected or disabled remotely can create a physical hazard even when its motion controller is functioning correctly.
Standards are still developing
McKinsey’s October 2025 analysis says ISO 10218 and ISO/TS 15066 primarily address industrial robot arms and collaborative robots rather than autonomous humanoids operating in unstructured settings. It reported ISO 25785-1 as under development at that time. A Fraunhofer IPA page later stated that dedicated humanoid safety standards were not expected until 2028. These are source-specific, date-labeled statements, not a complete legal map; applicable requirements still depend on the country, workplace and task. Operators need a documented risk assessment and local compliance review rather than waiting for a single universal humanoid standard.
Real environments are variable by design
Factories may have mapped aisles, repeatable materials and controlled access, while homes and construction sites rarely do. Construction robotics reviews identify dynamic layouts, hazards and variability as major obstacles. A route that is clear in the morning can be blocked by supplies in the afternoon; a fixture can move; weather can change traction; and workers can legitimately improvise around the machine.

Such a pilot is not evidence that the same robot can perform open-ended household or construction work. It is a deliberate reduction of environmental uncertainty while the company measures the remaining risks.
Best Value
Economics depend on useful operating hours, not a demo
A purchase decision must account for the work actually completed, including supervision, downtime, charging, maintenance, failed attempts, safety controls and integration. A robot that runs for two hours but needs an operator nearby or a technician after minor errors may produce fewer useful hours than a simpler machine.
McKinsey’s October 2025 analysis identifies four bridges from pilots to broader deployment: safety systems that allow operation without fences, sustained uptime, greater dexterity and mobility, and lower cost. It discusses a $20,000–$50,000 per-unit cost range as a level humanoids would need to reach to compete with human labor across mainstream sectors. This is an analyst-stated competitive threshold, not a verified average selling price or a rule that applies to every job.
The analysis also points to task-scoped architectures, modular joints, simplified wiring, standardization, serviceability and appropriately sized perception and compute as ways to improve economics. In practice, a less general robot may be the better business choice if it completes one valuable task with predictable maintenance.

How to evaluate a humanoid for a real deployment
Compare candidates against the same task definition and operating conditions. A useful scorecard includes:
| Evaluation axis | Questions to answer | Evidence required |
|---|---|---|
| Task complexity and variability | How many object types, poses, steps and exceptions occur? | Recorded trials covering normal and deliberately varied cases |
| Environment stability | Can layouts, lighting, floor conditions and access be controlled? | Site map, change log and disturbance tests |
| Success and recovery | Does the robot finish, recover or stop safely when it fails? | Task success, recovery time, intervention and damage rates |
| Payload and manipulation | What mass, reach, grip and tool use are required? | Measured payload at the needed posture and speed |
| Runtime and downtime | How long does it work while walking, and how long is charging or swapping? | On-site energy log for the actual configuration |
| Human proximity and safety | What happens during contact, intrusion or a component fault? | Force, stopping-distance, obstacle and failure tests |
| Cybersecurity | Who can command, update or access the robot? | Threat model, authentication, patch process and network controls |
| Maintenance and serviceability | Who replaces wear parts and how quickly? | Maintenance intervals, spare-part lead times and service procedures |
| Total cost per useful hour | What does completed work cost after labor, energy, downtime and integration? | Cost model based on measured useful hours, not purchase price alone |
A safer pilot proceeds in stages
- Define one task. Specify the object set, acceptable cycle time, payload, workspace, human access and what counts as success.
- Record the baseline. Measure the current process, including labor time, error cost, safety incidents and interruptions.
- Constrain the first environment. Mark walking routes, remove avoidable hazards, control access and provide a supervised stop mechanism.
- Test known variation. Change object orientation, lighting, placement and timing within realistic bounds. Log every intervention.
- Test failures deliberately. Introduce blocked paths, dropped objects, sensor loss and communication interruptions under a documented safety plan.
- Measure useful output. Report completed cycles per hour, recovery rate, charging and maintenance downtime, human interventions and energy use.
- Expand only after review. Add new objects, layouts or human interaction one variable at a time, with a stop criterion if safety or reliability falls.
Common deployment failures and practical responses
- The robot works only in one arrangement: expand the test set and add adaptation or re-planning before widening the route.
- Walking consumes too much battery: shorten routes, reduce carried mass, add a charging or swap plan, and calculate output per useful hour.
- Recovery requires a specialist: document a standard operator procedure and measure intervention frequency; if the procedure is too complex, narrow the task.
- Contact is too forceful: lower speed and payload, change end-effectors or workspace separation, then repeat force and stopping tests.
- Wireless access is uncontrolled: isolate networks, enforce authentication, patch the robot and retain command logs before allowing production use.
- A pilot looks impressive but loses money: include supervision, integration, downtime, repairs and failed cycles in the cost per completed task.
What a convincing result looks like
A credible deployment claim identifies the robot configuration, firmware, task, environment, payload, runtime, human proximity, number of trials and failure-handling procedure. It reports both successes and interventions. Comparable testing is valuable because, as Werner Kraus, head of the Automation and Robotics research division at Fraunhofer IPA, said: “Users can interpret the results directly and thus find the right humanoid for the right application.”
The evidence currently supports targeted pilots in structured settings more strongly than general-purpose autonomy. Humanoids may eventually combine mobility and manipulation where fixed automation cannot, but dependable real-world operation requires the entire system—perception, control, energy, safety, security, maintenance and economics—to meet the site’s requirements at the same time.
