An RTS unit is powerful when the resources and production time invested in it create useful impact in the actual match. That impact is not the same as a high attack value. A unit must be able to reach relevant targets, survive long enough to matter, trade efficiently, and fit an army you can afford to produce. The reliable way to judge it is to read cost, production, combat statistics, counters, access, and battlefield role together.
This framework applies across games, but the rules are game-specific. Age of Empires II, Age of Empires IV, and StarCraft II use different economies, damage systems, armor rules, supply limits, terrain interactions, and balance updates. A comparison is meaningful only when it names the game, edition, patch or update, upgrades, and engagement conditions.

Power means useful impact, not the biggest number
Players often begin with damage, health, or an advertised tier. Those figures matter, but none answers the practical question: what does this unit accomplish for the resources and time spent on it?

The same unit can be dominant in one situation and inefficient in another. A slow high-damage unit may destroy an exposed army but fail to catch mobile raiders. A cheap food-and-wood unit may look weak in a duel yet be the correct choice when gold is scarce and the army must be expanded quickly. Strength is therefore a relationship between the unit and the problem it is solving.
Use the game’s own stat definitions first
Before comparing units, identify what each statistic means in that game’s rules. The official Age of Empires II learning page defines health, attack strength, armor, and range as core unit statistics. Health is a unit’s maximum and current hit points; attack strength is the damage it deals; armor provides defense against certain attacks; and range is the distance from which it can attack. See Controlling Your Empire & Gathering Resources.
Those labels are not interchangeable across RTS titles. One game may separate melee and ranged armor, another may use damage types and resistances, and another may apply bonuses, falloff, splash, or hardpoint-specific weapons. Record the actual rules before doing arithmetic.

Health tells you how much raw damage a unit can receive, not how long it will live in every engagement. Armor, resistances, shields, healing, repair, defensive abilities, and the number of enemy units firing at it all change effective survival time. A unit with less health can still last longer against the damage type it is designed to resist.
Attack strength and delivered damage
Attack strength is usually a per-hit value or a value modified by the target’s armor. It is not the same as damage per second, and damage per second is not the same as damage delivered in a real fight. Attack cooldown, reloads, accuracy, projectile travel, overkill, target switching, bonuses, area damage, and downtime between engagements determine the result.
Armor and damage types
Armor only has meaning relative to the incoming damage rules. Age of Empires IV support documentation explains that armor can interact differently with damage types and that unit statistics can be modified through defined parameters. Review Modifying Unit Stats for that system. A displayed armor value should never be treated as a universal percentage reduction without checking the game’s formula.
Range and sight
Range is the distance at which a unit can attack; sight is the distance at which it can detect or reveal information. They are separate advantages. Age of Empires IV support notes that sight range can depend on elevation and surrounding terrain. A ranged unit may have enough attack range to fire safely in open ground but lose that benefit in a forest, around a corner, or against a faster unit that reaches it.

Every unit consumes more than its listed resource price. Count the resources, production seconds, prerequisite buildings, required technologies, population or supply, and the workers or infrastructure needed to sustain production. Those inputs could instead buy another unit, an upgrade, defenses, expansion, or economic technology.

Age of Empires guidance describes food-only and food-and-wood units as useful army bulk when gold is limited, or as a response to an opponent’s composition. The lesson is broader than that example: the cheapest unit is not automatically the best value. Ask what the purchase lets you produce and do at that point in the match. The relevant source is Military & Economy.
Record the full investment
- Resources: list each resource separately rather than adding unlike resources into one unexplained total.
- Production time: include the number of production buildings and whether queues are already occupied.
- Prerequisites: include age, tech, building, upgrade, or faction requirements.
- Supply: account for population space and the infrastructure needed to create it.
- Opportunity: identify the strongest alternative purchase available at the same moment.
Two units with the same nominal cost can have very different strategic costs if one needs a technology, a rare resource, or a new production building. A unit that arrives thirty seconds later may be inferior for a timing attack even if its eventual combat statistics are better.
A comparison framework you can apply to any two units
Use the following axes together. They are prompts for analysis, not a universal scoring formula; some games do not expose every statistic or use the same damage model.

| Axis | What to measure | Question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Economic cost | Resources, production time, prerequisites, upgrades, supply | What else could this investment have produced? |
| Combat output | Damage per attack, attack cadence, accuracy, target restrictions, damage type, bonuses, splash | How much relevant damage can it deliver before the fight ends? |
| Survivability | Health, armor or resistance, shields, defensive abilities, healing, repair, protection | How much punishment can it absorb under the expected damage type? |
| Engagement access | Range, movement, sight, terrain, pathing, mobility, target access | Can it reach and continue attacking the targets that matter? |
| Role and composition | Front line, damage dealer, counter, siege, harassment, support, screening | What job does it perform, and what support does it need? |
| Match context | Game stage, map, scouting, upgrades, opponent composition, army size | Is this the right answer now rather than in theory? |
The framework deliberately avoids assigning fixed weights. A player defending a narrow entrance may value area damage and range more than movement speed. A player attacking exposed workers may value mobility and time-to-arrival more than maximum health.
Estimate combat output without mistaking a formula for a verdict
A useful first estimate is expected damage over time: damage per successful attack multiplied by attacks per second, then adjusted for armor, bonuses, accuracy, reloads, and downtime. That estimate is only a starting point. Real engagements add target selection, overkill, projectile travel, missed shots, animation delays, movement, and interruptions.
Start with target-specific damage
Calculate against the target you expect to meet, not against a blank unit. Apply the game’s armor and damage-type rules, then include any bonus against the target class. A unit with modest base damage can be the better choice if its bonus applies repeatedly to the opponent’s main army.
Include area damage and overkill
Single-target damage is easy to compare but can undervalue splash or area attacks. Area damage becomes more valuable as targets cluster, while a large single hit can be wasted when several units attack the same nearly defeated target. Conversely, splash can lose value when the opponent spreads out or uses disposable screening units.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Measure the engagement window
Ask how many attacks the unit can realistically make before it dies, retreats, loses vision, or runs out of targets. A theoretical damage-per-second figure based on uninterrupted firing is misleading when the unit spends most of the fight moving into range. Include travel time, setup time, reloads, and time spent retargeting.

Check the weapon model
Some RTS games allow multiple weapons or hardpoints, and a displayed attack value may not describe the whole interaction. Age of Empires support explains hardpoints and damage behavior in Hardpoints and Damage. Use the game’s documented model rather than importing a formula from another title.
Access determines whether damage is realized
Range is powerful because it can let a unit attack while taking less or no return damage, but only when the unit can maintain the required position. Terrain, line of sight, elevation, obstacles, movement speed, acceleration, turning, and enemy mobility determine whether that happens.
Blizzard’s StarCraft II guide gives the practical reason for valuing range: “Often, your opponent will give up the chase, at which point you can fire from range without taking any damage.” The complete guide is Game Guide: Unit Control. The sentence describes a conditional advantage, not a guarantee that every ranged unit wins every fight.
Questions to ask about access
- Can the unit attack the target class at all?
- How long does it take to reach firing range?
- Can the opponent close the distance before enough attacks land?
- Does the unit need a clear line of sight or a firing setup?
- Can terrain, buildings, or elevation create a safe angle?
- Will friendly units block its movement or attacks?
- Can it disengage when the matchup turns unfavorable?
A slow ranged unit may dominate a frontal approach yet fail when surrounded. A fast melee unit may deliver less damage per hit but spend more of the battle attacking rather than walking.
Survivability is more than hit points
Evaluate effective survival against the damage that will actually be aimed at the unit. Record health, relevant armor or resistance, shields, defensive cooldowns, healing or repair rules, and whether friendly units can screen it. Also consider formation depth: a high-health front-line unit can protect a fragile damage dealer even when its own damage is modest.
Survivability has an economic dimension. If a unit preserves expensive upgrades, veteran experience, or a high-value support group, its defensive contribution can exceed its own health bar. On the other hand, a durable unit that cannot threaten the opponent may simply delay an inevitable loss unless it buys time for reinforcements or an objective.
Counters are conditional, not absolute
A counter is useful when a specific rule gives it an edge against a specific threat. That rule might be a damage bonus, resistance, superior range, mobility, area attack, crowd control, or the ability to deny the opponent’s preferred engagement. Age of Empires II guidance explicitly connects military choices with countering an opponent’s choices, while Age of Empires IV documentation shows why armor and damage types must be considered together.
Test a counter in five stages
- Identify the threat: name the unit, upgrade, tactic, or objective that is causing the problem.
- Identify the advantage: state the exact rule that makes your proposed response effective.
- Check production: verify that the counter is available at the required age, building, technology, and resource mix.
- Check access: confirm that it can reach the threat and keep attacking under the map and terrain conditions.
- Check the second-order response: list what the opponent can add to punish your counter and whether your army can protect it.
Never write that one unit always beats another without specifying the game’s current rules and conditions. A nominal counter can arrive too late, cost more than the threat it neutralizes, lose in poor terrain, or be vulnerable to the opponent’s support units. The practical question is not whether the counter wins a laboratory duel; it is whether it improves your position after production time, travel, losses, and follow-up attacks.

Role and composition decide battlefield value
Units should be judged inside an army rather than only in isolated duels. Official Age of Empires material notes that units each have a place in the army and that some are defensively weak or especially effective against groups. A unit’s role tells you which statistics deserve the most weight.
Front-line and pressure absorbers
These units occupy space, draw attacks, protect fragile allies, or buy time. Health, relevant armor, formation behavior, and affordability often matter more than peak damage. Their value rises when they allow ranged or siege units to keep firing.
Damage dealers
These units convert safe access into damage. Attack cadence, target selection, range, bonuses, accuracy, and protection from melee contact are central. A high-output unit that dies before firing is not performing its intended role.
Specialized counters
These units answer a defined target class or mechanic. Their strength depends on the opponent actually producing that target and on the counter’s ability to avoid being neutralized by the rest of the enemy army.
Harassment and mobility
Fast units can create value without winning a stand-up fight by attacking workers, reinforcements, exposed technology, or objectives. Movement speed, vision, escape routes, and the time required for the opponent to respond can matter more than durability.
Support, siege, and area control
Support units may increase the output or survival of nearby allies rather than dealing impressive direct damage. Siege and area-control units can make a location difficult to enter, but they require protection, space, and time to deploy. Their value is often highest when the rest of the army makes their ideal engagement possible.
Match context changes the answer
Evaluate a unit against the state of the match, not a generic tier list. At minimum, record:

- Map size, terrain, chokepoints, open space, and resource locations.
- What scouting has actually revealed about the opponent.
- Upgrade state on both sides.
- Expected army size when the forces meet.
- Reinforcement distance and production capacity.
- Whether the fight concerns an army, workers, a base entrance, or an objective.
A unit that is efficient in a small early skirmish may scale poorly into a large battle. Another may need upgrades or critical mass before it becomes effective. A composition that wins in open terrain can fail at a fortified entrance, while a slow army can be strong if the opponent must attack into it.
Best Value
A step-by-step method for comparing two real options
- Define the decision: write the opponent’s threat and your immediate objective in one sentence.
- Freeze the rules: name the game, edition, patch or update, faction, upgrades, and map assumptions.
- List complete costs: include resources, supply, production buildings, technology, and production time.
- Choose realistic targets: compare damage against the units you expect to meet, including armor and bonuses.
- Estimate delivered output: account for attack cadence, accuracy, splash, movement, reloads, and likely firing time.
- Estimate survival: apply the relevant damage type, defensive effects, focus fire, and available protection.
- Test access: check range, speed, vision, terrain, pathing, and retreat options.
- Place each option in a composition: identify the front line, support, counter coverage, and reinforcement plan.
- Run the opponent’s response: add the most plausible counter or support unit and reassess.
- Choose the decision rule: select the option that solves the present problem at an acceptable cost, not the option with the most impressive isolated statistic.
Common mistakes that make units look stronger or weaker
Ranking by one statistic
Maximum damage, health, or range cannot represent cost, access, armor interactions, or role. Use a complete comparison instead.
Ignoring production time
An efficient unit that arrives after the opponent’s timing attack may be strategically inferior to a weaker unit available immediately.
Comparing unlike resources as if they were interchangeable
Food, wood, gold, and other resources have different availability and strategic uses. State the resource mix and the economy that must sustain it.
Assuming a counter wins without support
A specialized counter can be vulnerable to the opponent’s screening, ranged support, mobility, or area damage. Evaluate the whole engagement.
Using current-sounding numbers without a patch context
Balance updates can change damage, costs, production times, armor, and bonuses. Any numerical matchup should identify its version and conditions; otherwise, describe the rule rather than presenting a stale ranking.
Confusing a duel with a mission
Destroying an opposing unit is not always the objective. Denying an expansion, protecting workers, holding a choke, escorting siege, or surviving until reinforcements arrive can make a unit valuable even when it loses a direct exchange.
Is there a universal formula?
There is no established cross-game score that reliably ranks every RTS unit. A community question on this subject mentions range, splash damage, armor class, speed, cost, and tier as possible ingredients, but player phrasing is not a universal game-design standard; see the discussion at Is there a formula to to gauge how strong a military unit is?
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You can build a game-specific decision model, but its weights must reflect the scenario. One practical model is to estimate expected contribution over the planned engagement, divide by the full economic and time investment, then apply penalties for poor access, vulnerability, and unreliable targets. The result is a planning aid, not an objective rating. If the match objective changes, the weights change with it.
How to keep comparisons accurate over time
For a current guide or matchup note, record the date, game version, faction, map assumptions, upgrades, unit count, and engagement conditions. Separate documented rules from your own scenario analysis. Official sources for Age of Empires II identify the basic statistics and military-economy concepts, while Age of Empires IV support documents damage and stat interactions. StarCraft II’s official guide illustrates how control and range can alter realized damage. None of these sources establishes a universal ranking across games.
When a patch changes a cost, bonus, armor interaction, or production time, update the affected comparison rather than preserving a conclusion based on the old rule. If a value is unknown or differs by edition, say so and avoid filling the gap with an assumed number.
The practical test
When deciding whether an RTS unit is powerful, ask six questions in order: What does it cost, what can it damage, what can damage it, can it reach the right target, what role does it perform in the army, and is that role needed in this match right now? A unit is strong when the answers align well enough that its investment produces more useful battlefield impact than the available alternatives.
