The strongest signal is not a top-down camera or fantasy setting: it is that a new tool changes where you can go, how you solve problems, and how you handle enemies. That is a useful design framework, not an official genre definition.
What makes a game Zelda-like?
A game earns the comparison through the way its mechanics reinforce one another. In a recognizable Zelda-like pattern, the player explores a world, finds a new capability, then uses it to reach new places and approach challenges differently. The ability may also make puzzles solvable or change the tactics that work in combat. Progress therefore comes from gaining new interactions with the world, not only from improving a character’s numbers.

Cloaked Games’ 2020 design essay proposes key-item progression as a way to define a Zelda-like for its own design purposes. In that model, key items open up exploration, puzzle solutions, and combat options. The essay is a developer’s framework, not a binding industry standard; games can borrow parts of the pattern without matching every part.

That distinction matters for indie RPGs because “RPG” and “Zelda-like” describe different things. RPG elements might include character growth and statistics, while Zelda-like describes how exploration, tools, puzzles, and action are organized. A game can combine both. The question is not whether a title has RPG features, but whether its progression also gives the player new ways to interact with its spaces and challenges.

How item-based progression connects the game
A tool changes what the player can do
In an item-driven progression loop, an ability is more than a reward or a stronger attack. It expands the player’s available actions. A previously unreachable route may become accessible; an environmental obstacle may become a puzzle; an enemy that was difficult to approach may invite a different tactic. The item is valuable because it changes the set of possible decisions.
This approach contrasts with progression that chiefly increases attributes. A level increase may make an existing action more effective, while a new tool can make an entirely different action possible. Many games can combine the two: levels and equipment can improve a character while key items expand the world’s interactive vocabulary. The design essay’s model describes one possible balance, not a rule that a Zelda-like must exclude conventional RPG growth.
One ability can serve several purposes
The most integrated version of the pattern gives a tool multiple jobs. It might help the player cross a gap, manipulate an object to solve a puzzle, and create an opening in a fight. The point is not to make every item work in every situation. It is to make the item’s uses feel like expressions of the same underlying ability, rather than unrelated functions bundled together.
That connection helps a new item feel legible. Once the player has learned what it can do in one context, they can look for other contexts where the same capability might matter. Exploration becomes a search for possible uses; puzzles test whether the player can recognize them; combat asks the player to apply them under pressure. The player is not simply collecting separate keys for separate locks but learning a growing set of ways to act.

Progression becomes a loop, not a checklist
The design pays off when each part feeds the next. Exploring can reveal a tool or a place where a tool might be useful. Solving a puzzle can teach a mechanic that later matters in combat. A fight can test whether the player understands an ability beyond its obvious use. Success then creates access to further exploration. This loop is more informative than counting how many items a game contains: a large inventory can still feel disconnected if its contents rarely affect navigation, puzzles, or battles.
Why puzzles are central to the resemblance
Puzzles are not merely optional pauses between fights in this framework. They give the player a place to experiment with the game’s rules and demonstrate that a tool can be applied thoughtfully. A puzzle may ask the player to notice a route, manipulate the environment, or combine an ability with something already available. The satisfaction comes partly from understanding the problem and choosing an approach.
Nintendo producer Eiji Aonuma described that freedom as part of the series’ identity in the official 2024 interview Ask the Developer Vol. 13, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom — Part 1, published September 23, 2024: “Even when it comes to solving puzzles – in a game in the Legend of Zelda series, having the excitement of solving puzzles in your own unique way makes the game ‘Legend of Zelda-like.’” His comment is about the series’ intended experience, not a universal test that every game must pass.

The relevant design question is whether players can reason about a problem and feel that their solution belongs to them. A tightly constrained puzzle can still be satisfying, but a game that makes experimentation meaningful has a particularly clear connection to Aonuma’s description. If there are multiple plausible approaches, the game should communicate enough about its rules for players to discover them rather than rely on arbitrary guessing.

How combat fits into a Zelda-like action RPG
Combat is most closely tied to the pattern when tools gained through exploration also affect encounters. A new capability might change how a player approaches an enemy, creates an opening, or responds to a threat. Combat then becomes another arena for understanding the item system, not a separate activity governed only by damage values and character statistics.
This does not mean every item needs to be a weapon, or every enemy must be solved with a puzzle. The useful test is whether acquired tools meaningfully alter combat choices. If a tool opens a route and solves environmental puzzles but has no bearing on enemies, the game still has item-led exploration and puzzles; its combat is simply less integrated with those systems. That is a difference in degree and emphasis, not a reason to declare the game invalid.
CrossCode illustrates how the categories can overlap. In an interview with Siliconera, co-founder Felix Klein characterized the game as a mix of Zelda-type action-adventure and action RPG. He described puzzle mechanics in battles and fast-paced puzzles involving shooting. That is one developer’s account of one project, not proof of a universal genre boundary. It does show how action-RPG combat can coexist with puzzle-centered action-adventure design.

A top-down perspective, fantasy world, dungeons, or stylized adventure presentation can evoke Zelda, but these are surface cues. They do not establish the deeper mechanical resemblance on their own. A top-down fantasy RPG whose progress depends mainly on statistics may look familiar while using a different progression structure. Conversely, a game can share the item-and-puzzle logic without copying the same presentation.

It overlaps with other adventure genres
The Cloaked Games essay notes that key-item exploration overlaps with Metroidvania world design: both can use new abilities to open previously inaccessible routes. In the essay’s proposed distinction, puzzle use and enemy design help explain the Zelda-like pattern. The overlap means a label should describe the game’s emphasis rather than pretend that genre categories have hard borders. A game can feel like both, or mix those structures with RPG progression.
It is not a requirement to imitate one specific game
Calling a design Zelda-like is most useful as shorthand for a set of relationships among mechanics, not a claim that the game reproduces a particular map, item list, or story. Designers can create different worlds and abilities while preserving the underlying pattern: tools expand interaction, puzzles reward experimentation, and combat can draw on the same capabilities. The label is descriptive, not a quality verdict.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical way to assess an indie RPG
When deciding whether the label fits, look at the role mechanics play over the course of the game rather than judging one screenshot, isolated feature, or promotional description. These questions work for players comparing games and for developers checking whether their systems support the experience they intend.
- Check item-gated exploration. Do new tools or abilities open routes or areas that were inaccessible before? If so, progression includes changes to what the player can reach, not only to how powerful they are.
- Check how often puzzles matter. Are item-based puzzles a recurring activity, particularly in structured challenge spaces such as dungeons, or are they occasional diversions? Frequent, meaningful puzzle-solving is a stronger signal than a handful of incidental obstacles.
- Check combat integration. Do acquired tools change the player’s approach to enemies or bosses? Note whether combat draws on the same capabilities used for traversal and puzzles, or functions mostly as a separate system.
- Check the progression balance. Does advancement chiefly unlock new ways to interact with the world, chiefly improve RPG attributes, or combine both? The answer describes the game’s emphasis; it does not by itself determine whether the label is allowed.
- Check player freedom. Does the game reward experimentation or allow different ways to solve problems? Aonuma’s account makes this an important clue to the intended Zelda-like feeling, although not every game needs to support several solutions to every puzzle.
No single answer settles the label. A title with item-gated routes, recurring puzzles, and combat that uses the same tools has a tightly integrated resemblance. One with a top-down view but little interaction between those systems has a weaker mechanical resemblance, even if its presentation feels familiar. Between those poles are hybrids, including action RPGs that bring puzzle logic into battles.

What examples show about the design
Echoes of Wisdom as a first-party illustration
Nintendo’s 2024 developer interview describes echoes as copied objects and creatures that players can use in new ways, including as platforms or combat helpers. That makes the system a clear illustration of how one mechanic can contribute to traversal, puzzle-solving, and combat. The game is a first-party Zelda reference point, not an indie RPG example; its value here is showing the kind of cross-system design the article describes.
CrossCode as a genre hybrid
Klein’s description of CrossCode gives a different illustration: an action RPG can combine Zelda-type action-adventure with battles that use puzzle mechanics and fast-paced shooting puzzles. It is evidence of one developer’s design intent and categorization. It should not be treated as a rule that all Zelda-like games must use shooting, or that all action RPGs with puzzles belong to the same category.
Together, the examples show why mechanics provide a better comparison than labels alone. One demonstrates a single ability system serving several purposes; the other demonstrates a hybrid structure in which puzzle-solving and action combat intersect. Neither implies that every indie game using the Zelda-like description will share the same implementation.
Use the label as a description, not a certification
There is no official genre standard in the sources discussed here, and the available material establishes no statistic about how common Zelda-like games are, how they sell, or who plays them. The most defensible use of the term is therefore specific: explain which mechanics create the resemblance. Say whether a game emphasizes item-gated exploration, recurring puzzles, experimental solutions, integrated combat, RPG stat growth, or some combination of them.
That specificity helps readers understand what to expect. “Top-down fantasy RPG” tells them about presentation and broad genre. “Zelda-like action RPG” suggests a more particular experience, but the label is clearest when accompanied by the actual design features: tools that open routes, puzzles that ask players to apply them, and action encounters that may use the same abilities. The mechanics, rather than the resemblance in appearance, make the comparison meaningful.
