What makes an antihero different from a villain in video games? An antihero is a central character who falls short of conventional heroism but may still have understandable goals, loyalties, or limits. A villain is defined more by harmful aims or methods that make them a threat. The labels are not opposites on one scale: a protagonist can be an antihero—or act like a villain—and an antagonist can have motives players understand.
Protagonist and hero mean different things
Protagonist describes a story role: the character whose perspective or journey is central. Antagonist describes a character or force opposing that protagonist. Neither term tells you whether someone is morally good. A playable lead can commit villainous acts, while an antagonist can have a comprehensible motive.

This distinction matters especially in games, where the player may control a character whose actions are partly set by the writers and partly chosen during play. A character’s authored story and a player’s optional conduct can point in different moral directions.

Do not decide from a tragic past, a violent scene, or the fact that the character is playable. Look at the whole portrayal and ask the same questions of each character:

- Goal: What are they trying to achieve? An understandable goal can add complexity, but it does not excuse the means.
- Methods and victims: What harm do they cause, and who pays for it? Good intentions are not a moral blank cheque.
- Care and restraint: Do they protect anyone, keep promises, or refuse certain acts? Such limits can help distinguish a compromised lead from someone defined by harm.
- Role: Are they the protagonist, antagonist, or both at different points? This is separate from their moral character.
- Player agency: Which actions are written into the story, and which are optional? Does the game reward or discourage them?
- Consequences and framing: Do choices affect people or the world, and does the game acknowledge those effects—or treat actions mainly as a way to collect rewards?
An antihero need not be likable, redeemable, or less violent than a villain. What often marks the antihero is a morally compromised central character whose goal, relationships, or remaining limits can invite alignment or sympathy. Sympathy is not approval.
Deacon St. John: a survival-driven antihero
Days Gone offers a direct example. In a 2016 PlayStation.Blog interview, creative director Ron Allen and the Bend Studio team described Deacon St. John as a dangerous survivor with a motorcycle-gang past, and said the game does not shy away from his antihero persona. Allen’s summary was: “Desperate people do what desperate people need to do to survive.”

- 7” scale action figure is based on his look from the video game DOOM: The Dark Ages
- Includes the exclusive Phalanx Skin, which you can un-lock in game with the redeemable code inside the box. Only available with the purchase of the action figure!
- Designed with Ultra Articulation with up to 22 moving parts for full range of posing

That is the developers’ characterization of this particular lead, not a universal rule that survival excuses violence. Deacon’s dangerousness complicates a straightforward heroic image; it does not settle the morality of every act.

Games can make moral character something players help shape. In Vampyr, protagonist Jonathan Reid is a doctor who can use his medical skills to help the sick and can also feed on citizens. Game director Philippe Moreau described the trade-off in an Unreal Engine interview: feeding brings experience rewards, while the victim’s relatives, friends, and community are affected. The choice is not just a label on Reid; it connects player advantage to consequences for other people.

A morality meter is not required for a choice to matter. A decision can be shallow if it amounts only to optimizing rewards, while consequences tied to characters and the world can give it ethical weight. In a Far Cry discussion, Ubisoft describes stories in which protagonists fight unjust forces through violence, villains present their own perspectives, and choices invite players to reflect without a simple meter declaring them good or evil. As Ubisoft quotes Far Cry IP director Drew: “Look at the things you’ve done. What do your actions say about what you value?”
When a game permits a wide range of optional actions, distinguish the character the story establishes from the version a player chooses to perform. Consider whether the game acknowledges, contextualizes, rewards, or punishes those choices. A player’s ability to do something is not, on its own, proof that the story endorses it.

A villain can believe they are right
Understanding a villain’s motive does not turn them into an antihero. A villain may see their actions as necessary or righteous even while causing serious harm. Game creator Ken Levine made this point in a Game Developer interview about villain design: “Even though he’s obviously a villain, in his mind, he wasn’t,” he said of Andrew Ryan. Levine also argued that a tragic character needs something that makes them seem great to themselves: “Everybody’s the hero of their own story; if you can’t find something that makes them great, you don’t have a tragic character.”
That self-image can make an antagonist more dimensional. It does not erase the victims, the harm, or the choices that make them a threat. Empathy explains a character; it does not exonerate them.

Use the whole game, not one label
To classify a character, weigh their goals, methods, victims, relationships, limits, and the story’s response to their actions. Then separate the authored arc from what the player can choose. A morally compromised lead with meaningful loyalties or restraint may be an antihero; a character defined by harmful aims or methods may be a villain, whether they oppose the protagonist or occupy the central role. Some games deliberately leave that judgment unsettled.
