What Makes an AI Company a Good Long-Term Investment?

A promising AI business is not automatically a good investment. Look for evidence that it can turn lasting customer demand into durable revenue, improving operating economics and cash generation—and then ask whether the share price leaves room for a reasonable return. AI exposure alone answers none of those questions.

Start with the business, then assess the investment

Separate two judgments: whether the company has a sound business, and whether its stock is attractively priced. A company can have useful AI products and fast growth yet still be a poor investment if it cannot earn a sustainable profit, needs more capital than it can secure, or is priced for outcomes it may not achieve.

Use company filings to check reported results, spending and risks. Those disclosures are evidence of what the company reported—not independent proof that its forecasts or strategy will succeed. Treat management projections and market-size claims as assumptions to test against execution and funding needs.

Check whether customer demand is durable

Revenue growth is more meaningful when customers keep using the products, renew contracts or expand their use. Look for evidence of adoption and repeat business, and examine customer concentration where the company discloses it. A handful of large customers can make reported growth vulnerable to a lost contract or delayed purchase.

Ask what makes the product difficult to replace. Possible advantages include integration into important workflows, distribution, proprietary data or technical capability, but each claim needs company-specific evidence. In AI, technology, business models and pricing can change quickly; an advantage that exists today may not persist.

Compare growth with margins and cash generation

Revenue growth does not show whether a company is becoming economically stronger. Review gross margin, operating income and cash generation alongside sales. Improving operating economics and cash generation make growth more persuasive; weakening margins or persistent cash consumption call for a closer look at the costs required to serve customers and develop products.

AI infrastructure can be expensive. Cloud capacity, servers, GPUs, networking, energy and suitable sites may all constrain a company’s ability to scale or put pressure on margins. Research and product development also require ongoing investment. Ask whether the company can fund these needs from operations, and whether spending is producing a credible path to better economics.

What reported results can—and cannot—show

Microsoft reported fiscal 2025 revenue of $168.9 billion for Microsoft Cloud, up 23% year over year, and 34% growth in Azure and other cloud services revenue. Those figures show growth in cloud businesses, not a standalone measure of AI revenue. The company also reported that total revenue increased 15% and operating income increased 17% in fiscal 2025 compared with fiscal 2024. Its Microsoft Cloud gross margin percentage fell to 69%; Microsoft attributed the decrease to scaling AI infrastructure, offset in part by Azure efficiency gains. Microsoft FY2025 annual report

The example illustrates why sales growth and investment costs should be examined together: demand can expand while the infrastructure needed to serve it affects margins.

Test the route to profitability and funding runway

For a company that is not profitable, identify what would need to change for it to become profitable: pricing, customer adoption, gross margin, operating expenses or some combination. Then ask whether the company has enough cash and access to financing to fund that route. Losses are not automatically disqualifying, but a path to profitability should not be assumed simply because a company sells AI products.

C3.ai reported net losses of approximately $470.4 million for fiscal 2026, $288.7 million for fiscal 2025 and $279.7 million for fiscal 2024, and an accumulated deficit of $1.8 billion as of April 30, 2026. The company said it expects to continue incurring net losses for the foreseeable future and does not know whether or when it will achieve or maintain profitability. These are C3.ai’s disclosures, not a description of AI companies generally. C3.ai FY2026 annual report filed with the SEC

Understand dependencies, competition and risks

An AI company may depend on outside providers for models, cloud services, chips, power or other infrastructure. Those relationships can affect costs, capacity and product control. Consider whether the company can negotiate favorable terms, diversify suppliers or build alternatives—and what might happen if a key provider changes pricing or availability.

Competition can also limit pricing power. Microsoft describes software and cloud markets as dynamic and highly competitive, with uncertain customer demand, AI adoption, competitive pricing and the ability to monetize AI services sufficiently to recover costs. Its report also identifies constraints involving permitted land, predictable energy, networking supplies, servers, GPUs and components. These are company-disclosed risks, not a guarantee that every AI business faces the same exposure. Microsoft FY2025 annual report

Review legal and regulatory exposure, cybersecurity and governance as well as commercial risks. A security incident, regulatory change, litigation or execution failure can undermine customer trust, delay adoption or add costs. Focus on risks material to the particular company’s products, markets and dependencies rather than treating “AI risk” as one uniform category.

Assess the price separately from company quality

Even a strong business can be a poor investment at a price that assumes unusually high growth or profits. Compare the current share price with a range of plausible future outcomes, including slower adoption, lower pricing, higher infrastructure costs and weaker margins. The question is not only whether the company could succeed, but how much success is already reflected in what investors pay.

There is no single AI valuation metric that settles this question. A useful assessment depends on the company’s business model, financial position, growth prospects and the assumptions used to estimate future results. The company examples above do not provide a current market-data comparison or a basis for a target price.

A practical company comparison

When comparing AI companies, use the same questions for each one and distinguish reported facts from management expectations:

  • Business and adoption: What does the company sell, who pays, and what evidence shows customers are adopting, renewing or expanding use?
  • Revenue durability: How fast is revenue growing, and how exposed is it to a small number of customers or a narrow set of use cases?
  • Economics: What are the gross and operating margins, and are they improving alongside revenue?
  • Cash and financing: Is the company generating cash or consuming it? How long can its available funding support its plans?
  • Investment needs: What must it spend on infrastructure, research and commercialization to compete?
  • Dependencies and advantage: Which outside providers are essential, and what evidence supports the company’s claimed technical, data, distribution or workflow edge?
  • Risks and valuation: What legal, regulatory, security, governance and execution risks could change the outlook, and what future results does the current price appear to require?

Use comparable reporting periods and consistent definitions where possible. If a company does not disclose a figure or evidence needed to answer a question, mark the gap rather than filling it with an assumption.

Treat forecasts as conditional

Forecasts depend on assumptions about customer adoption, competition, pricing, infrastructure capacity and costs. Check whether past execution supports those assumptions, and consider what funding will be required if growth takes longer or costs more than expected. Microsoft cautions in its FY2025 annual report: “Forward-looking statements are based on current expectations and assumptions that are subject to risks and uncertainties that may cause actual results to differ materially.” Microsoft FY2025 annual report
