A commercial release describes how a game is distributed or financed; it does not by itself prove or disprove research intent. Some games pursue both goals, but the research question, commercial objective, evidence, and outputs should be identified separately.
The decisive difference is the project’s purpose
The most useful starting point is not whether a game is sold, free, polished, experimental, or made at a university. Ask what the project is trying to know.

Marcello A. Gómez-Maureira, Max van Duijn, Carolien Rieffe, and Aske Plaat define academic games as “games that are used and developed within academic institutions for the generation, evaluation, or dissemination of knowledge.” That definition puts the knowledge contribution at the center. A game can generate observations, evaluate an intervention, communicate findings, or provide a model for investigating a system.
The UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) uses a related research standard in its Video Games Research Framework, published 30 May 2023. Its stated objective is “to facilitate and promote high quality independent research on video games and emerging game-related technologies.” The framework is best-practice guidance, not a universal legal or institutional test. Universities, funders, ethics committees, and regulators may apply additional rules.

What a commercial release tells you—and what it does not
A commercial release primarily signals a distribution or business outcome: a publisher intends to reach customers, earn revenue, build an audience, or support a product. It says nothing conclusive about whether the development also investigates a question.
A research project may release a game commercially, publish it as a free download, keep it as a laboratory prototype, or never distribute it publicly. Conversely, a game produced by a university, labelled “educational,” or described as a prototype is not automatically research. The objectives and evidence plan decide the issue.
Five tests for identifying a research game
There is no validated scorecard that classifies every project. These practical indicators synthesize the academic-games literature, the DCMS framework, and Freese and Bekebrede’s 2025 design discussion. The more clearly a project satisfies them, the stronger its research case.
1. It starts with an answerable question
The project should state what it wants to find out, not merely what it wants to build. Questions might concern how players learn a concept, how people respond to a policy scenario, whether a particular interaction changes behavior, or how a simulated system behaves under different conditions.
“Can we make an engaging game about recycling?” is a design brief. “Does a game-based intervention improve immediate recall of recycling rules compared with a conventional lesson?” is a research question because it identifies a phenomenon that can be investigated.
2. The game has an explicit role in the method
Researchers may use a game as:
- A stimulus: players encounter a controlled scenario and report perceptions, decisions, emotions, or other responses.
- An intervention: participants play as part of a treatment whose effects are evaluated.
- An incentive: game mechanics encourage participation or make a task feasible, while the study examines the resulting data.
- A modeling platform: rules and simulated environments represent a system so researchers can explore player or system behavior.
The game is therefore part of the research apparatus, not simply the object being delivered to customers. Freese and Bekebrede describe a research game’s objective as answering research questions through data about player and system behavior.

3. It has an evidence and analysis plan
A research claim requires a plan for collecting evidence and relating it to the question. Evidence may include player choices, completion times, in-game logs, survey responses, interviews, observations, physiological measures, or system-level outcomes. The plan should explain what will be measured, from whom, under what conditions, and how the results will be analyzed.
A playable build without this plan is only a prototype. Playability can be necessary for a study, but it is not sufficient evidence of research intent.
4. It promises a knowledge output
Research outputs can include a paper, dataset, validated measure, theory, design principle, model, evaluation report, or documented finding. The output need not be a commercial product. A game whose only success criterion is sales, retention, or audience growth may be a product project unless those measures are embedded in a broader inquiry.
5. It handles independence and ethics deliberately
The project should disclose who controls the research question, data, analysis, and publication. Commercial partners can contribute funding, technology, or distribution without disqualifying a study. However, a partner’s marketing or product goals may conflict with the research objective. Separating those objectives makes the work easier to evaluate.
When people participate, the plan should address consent, personal-data processing, privacy, data sharing, withdrawal, and secure storage. The exact duties depend on the country, institution, funder, participant population, and applicable law.

| Question | Research project | Primarily commercial release |
|---|---|---|
| Primary objective | Answer a stated question or generate, evaluate, or communicate knowledge. | Deliver a product, build an audience, earn revenue, or meet a business goal. |
| Role of the game | Stimulus, intervention, incentive, model, or other instrument tied to the inquiry. | End product offered to users or customers. |
| Evidence plan | Predefined data or other evidence, collection conditions, and analysis method. | Product analytics and feedback may guide iteration, but are not necessarily organized to answer a research question. |
| Intended output | Findings, methods, models, datasets, theory, or documented knowledge. | Revenue, engagement, brand value, distribution, or customer satisfaction. |
| Commercial interests | May coexist, but their influence on questions, access to data, analysis, and publication is made explicit. | Usually governs the scope, schedule, features, and release decisions. |
| Participant protections | Consent, privacy, data handling, and relevant ethics review are planned for human-participant work. | Consumer terms and product privacy practices may apply; they do not automatically satisfy research requirements. |
How the game fits common research methods
The DCMS framework covers both quantitative and qualitative work. The method should match the question rather than being chosen because a game makes data collection convenient.
Quantitative studies
A study might compare outcomes between players who receive an intervention and a control group, examine relationships between choices and player characteristics, or analyze server logs across many sessions. Useful details include the outcome definition, comparison condition, sampling strategy, exclusions, and statistical analysis.
Qualitative studies
Interviews, focus groups, think-aloud sessions, observation, and thematic analysis can investigate how players interpret rules, experience a scenario, or explain their decisions. A small, carefully selected sample can be appropriate when the question concerns meaning or process rather than population prevalence.

Controlled laboratory sessions can hold hardware, instructions, and play time constant. Interviews can follow play to probe reasoning that telemetry cannot reveal. The study should document the setting and any researcher interaction that could influence behavior.
Naturalistic fieldwork
Field studies observe a game in a real classroom, workplace, community, or public setting. They can reveal practical constraints and unplanned uses, but the researcher must account for contextual factors that a laboratory would control.
Prototype deployments and server-data analysis
A prototype deployed to real users can provide behavioral evidence, while server logs can capture sequences of actions at scale. Logging should be limited to data necessary for the question, with retention, access, anonymization or pseudonymization, and sharing rules defined in advance.

Surveys
Surveys can measure attitudes, self-reported learning, perceived presence, or intentions before and after play. A survey attached to a game is not automatically a study: the instrument, sampling, timing, and analysis must support a stated inquiry.
“Serious game,” “academic game,” and “research game” are not synonyms
Serious game is a broad purpose label. It generally covers games intended for training, education, health, public policy, communication, or another purpose beyond entertainment. The label does not establish that the project generates new knowledge.
Academic game refers to the academic setting and knowledge-oriented use described by Gómez-Maureira and colleagues. Research game emphasizes the game’s role in answering research questions, including through player and system data.
For example, a first-aid training game built solely to deliver instruction can be a serious game without being a research project. If researchers then compare its outcomes with another teaching method, analyze the results, and report what the comparison establishes, the same game becomes part of a research project. That conclusion follows the cited definitions and is an application of them, not a universal rule.
A practical review checklist
Use these questions when reading a proposal, evaluating a prototype, or deciding how to describe your own project. This is a practical checklist derived from the cited framework and literature, not a validated scoring system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- What is the research question? Write it as a question about knowledge, behavior, experience, design, or a modeled system.
- What role does the game play? Identify whether it is a stimulus, intervention, incentive, modeling platform, or another instrument.
- Who or what supplies the evidence? Specify participants, player behavior, system outputs, interviews, surveys, or other sources.
- How will evidence be analyzed? Name the qualitative, quantitative, computational, or mixed-method approach and explain why it fits.
- What result would count as an answer? Define outcomes, comparison conditions, or interpretive criteria before treating engagement as a finding.
- What knowledge will be shared? State the intended paper, model, dataset, method, design principle, or other research output.
- Who controls the work? Record funders, commercial partners, access restrictions, publication rights, and conflicts of interest.
- How are people and their data protected? Plan consent, privacy, withdrawal, secure storage, retention, and responsible sharing.
When research and commercial goals coexist
A game can be both a product and a research instrument. A studio might release a game while studying how a mechanic affects cooperation; a university team might license a prototype while evaluating its educational effects. The existence of sales, a publisher, or a revenue model does not cancel the research.
Best Value
The risk is confusion. A commercial team may prioritize launch timing, conversion, retention, or undisclosed feature tests, while researchers need a stable method, transparent analysis, and the ability to report inconvenient results. A credible joint project documents which decisions serve the product and which answer the research question. It also specifies who can access raw data, whether results may be published, and how commercial restrictions affect reproducibility.
Ethics, consent, and data are part of the method
The DCMS framework treats ethics and data handling as core research concerns. Before collecting information from players, determine whether the work requires institutional review or another approval route in the relevant jurisdiction. Explain what participants will do, what will be recorded, foreseeable risks, payment or incentives, and how they can stop participating.
Game telemetry can reveal more than a player expects, especially when combined with account details, voice, location, or free-text chat. Collect only what the question needs. Set retention periods, restrict access, protect exports, and describe whether data will be shared with partners or other researchers. Privacy notices and consumer terms are not substitutes for a research consent process when the activity is research involving people.

Why the distinction matters
Clear classification affects study design, ethics review, funding, claims, and how results are interpreted. It prevents a polished demo from being presented as evidence, and it prevents a commercially released game from being dismissed merely because it earns money.
The DCMS framework reports that 60% of UK adults aged 16 and over and 91% of children and young people aged 3–15 play video games, figures attributed there to Ofcom. Those participation figures explain why games are valuable research environments, but they do not make any particular game a research project.
The strongest description therefore connects four things in one sentence: the question, the game’s role, the evidence and analysis, and the knowledge output. If any of those are missing, describe the work more modestly—as a product, prototype, educational tool, or serious game—until the research case is actually documented.
