No typeface is easiest for everyone. Reading ease comes from the interaction of letterform design, font size, spacing, line length, display quality, task and reader preference. A well-chosen typeface can make letters easier to distinguish, but the surrounding layout and the ability to resize or restyle text often matter just as much.
There is no universally easiest font
“Which font is easiest to read?” sounds as if one family should win a permanent ranking. Evidence does not support that kind of context-free answer. A 2025 review of cognitive and perceptual research describes legibility as dependent on the reading situation and discusses crowding, serifs, inter-letter spacing, weight and width as interacting variables, not as a single recipe. You can read the review record at PubMed.

The useful question is narrower: which typeface, at which size and setting, lets this audience distinguish and follow this text with the least effort? A font for a low-resolution display, a printed novel, a dashboard viewed from a distance and a child’s worksheet may need different solutions. Evaluate the complete presentation rather than treating the font file as an isolated accessibility fix.

Legibility is the ease with which individual letters, numerals and short words can be distinguished. It is affected by the shapes of glyphs, their internal spaces, stroke construction and how easily similar characters can be told apart.

Readability is the broader ease of reading connected text. It includes legibility, but also the rhythm created by word and line spacing, line length, paragraph structure, contrast, text size, resizing and the reader’s task. A typeface may have clearly different letters yet become tiring when set too small, packed into long lines or displayed with poor contrast.
This distinction prevents a common mistake: selecting a typeface by looking at a few large sample letters and assuming the result will hold for several paragraphs of body text.

| Feature | What to inspect | Why context matters |
|---|---|---|
| Glyph distinction | Check commonly confused pairs such as I, l and 1; O and 0; or c, e and o. Look at punctuation and numerals as well as letters. |
A shape that is obvious in a large specimen can merge at small sizes or on a soft display. |
| Proportions and x-height | Compare the height of lowercase forms, width of letters and size of counters (the enclosed spaces in letters such as e, a and p). |
Different proportions change apparent size and density at the same nominal point size. There is no evidence-backed universal x-height number that suits every reader or medium. |
| Stroke weight and contrast | Look for strokes that remain visible without filling in counters. Check regular, medium and bold weights in real text. | Very light strokes can disappear on screens; heavy or high-contrast construction can create glare or clogged interiors at small sizes. |
| Width and rhythm | Observe how much text fits on a line and whether repeated vertical strokes create a dense texture. | Narrow or wide designs alter line length, wrapping and the number of eye movements needed to complete a line. |
| Serifs | Assess the actual serif shapes, spacing and size rather than asking only whether a font is serif or sans serif. | Serifs are one variable among many. Neither category has a universal readability victory across print, screens, sizes and readers. |
| Built-in spacing | Inspect sidebearings, default kerning and the separation between words in paragraphs. | Spacing that looks airy in a heading may produce ragged, slow-reading lines in body copy; tight spacing may cause crowding. |
Setting can matter as much as the typeface
Choose a usable text size
Point size is not a reliable cross-font measurement: two families at the same CSS size can have different apparent lowercase heights. Start with a size that is comfortable at the intended viewing distance, then test on the actual devices. Do not lock text to a size that prevents browser zoom or user text enlargement.
Give lines enough vertical space
Line height separates one baseline from the next and helps readers keep their place. Too little creates collisions between ascenders and descenders; too much breaks the visual connection between lines. Set a sensible default, but allow user stylesheets, browser settings and responsive layouts to change it.
Control line length
Very long lines force a large horizontal eye movement and make it harder to find the next line. Very short lines create frequent breaks and hyphenation. W3C’s guidance for the visual-presentation criterion discusses a maximum line width of 80 characters or glyphs, or 40 for Chinese, Japanese and Korean text. That is guidance for a specific Level AAA criterion, not a universal typeface law. See W3C’s Understanding Success Criterion 1.4.8 for the complete context.

Prefer regular word spacing and avoid forced justification
Full justification can create uneven “rivers” of space when a layout cannot distribute words smoothly. Ragged-right text usually preserves more consistent word spacing. If you must justify text, inspect it at every responsive width and language rather than assuming the browser will produce even spacing.

Preserve contrast and adaptability
Contrast, background texture, anti-aliasing and display quality affect whether strokes remain visible. More importantly, readers need to be able to enlarge text, change colors or apply their own spacing. A visually attractive default that breaks when a user changes those settings is not a robust reading design.
What controlled studies say about dyslexia-oriented typefaces
Specialist fonts marketed for dyslexia often change letter shapes, spacing or both. The available evidence does not justify presenting one as a universal treatment or guaranteed performance improvement.

The 2020 letterform-and-spacing study
Galliussi and colleagues tested 64 children with dyslexia and 64 control children. They independently manipulated the letterform (standard versus a dyslexia-friendly design), inter-letter spacing and inter-word spacing. In the tested conditions, the letterform itself did not produce a reading-speed or accuracy advantage. Increased spacing was not a general improvement either; its effects depended on the combination of letterform and spacing. The full article is available in Annals of Dyslexia via PubMed Central.
The 2022 Dyslexie–Calibri study
Another study involved 71 children aged 8–12, including 37 with a dyslexia diagnosis, and compared Dyslexie with Calibri on letter naming, word-reading efficiency and passage reading. The indexed record establishes that design, but the source available here does not provide a verified outcome to quote. Treat claims about a definitive winner from this study cautiously; the record is at PubMed.

Spacing requirements for accessible web text
Web authors should distinguish their default styling from the changes a reader may apply. WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.12 tests whether content remains readable and operable when the user overrides text spacing. W3C states: “The intent of this success criterion (SC) is to ensure that when people override author-specified text spacing to improve their reading experience, content is still readable and operable.” The specified test values are:
| Property | User-applied value to withstand | What it means for authors |
|---|---|---|
| Line height | At least 1.5 times the font size | Content must not overlap, clip or hide controls when line spacing increases. |
| Paragraph spacing | At least 2 times the font size | Paragraphs must remain distinct without covering following content. |
| Letter spacing | At least 0.12 times the font size | Words and controls must still fit or reflow when letters are spread. |
| Word spacing | At least 0.16 times the font size | Expanded spaces must not cause truncation, overlap or loss of functionality. |
These numbers are robustness tests, not mandatory default values. W3C’s explanation and examples are at Understanding Success Criterion 1.4.12. Test menus, buttons, cards, tables, error messages and sticky elements, not just a paragraph of prose.
A repeatable way to choose and test a typeface
- Define the reading task. Separate long-form reading from labels, code, data tables, captions and wayfinding. Record the language, expected viewing distance, device resolution and whether users read in bright or dim conditions.
- Build a realistic test passage. Include headings, ordinary paragraphs, numerals, punctuation, mixed-case words and the glyph pairs your audience may confuse. Use the actual content length rather than a short pangram.
- Hold the setting constant. When comparing families, keep font size, line height, line width, color, display, text and task unchanged. Otherwise you cannot tell whether a result comes from the typeface or the layout.
- Compare the relevant axes. Check glyph distinction, apparent size, density, letter and word spacing, reader preference and observed performance. A useful comparison asks whether the surrounding layout still allows resizing and spacing overrides.
- Test at the smallest intended size. Inspect real screens and printouts if print is part of the use case. Look for disappearing hairlines, filled counters, merged punctuation and uneven color.
- Run accessibility changes. Zoom the page, enlarge text, increase line and paragraph spacing and apply letter and word spacing. Confirm that no content, focus indicator or control becomes hidden.
- Include representative readers. Ask people who match the audience to complete realistic reading tasks and report comfort. Record preferences rather than assuming a label such as “accessible” predicts an outcome.
- Choose a fallback stack. Specify alternatives with similar proportions so a missing webfont does not radically change wrapping or create an unusable layout.
A practical web pattern
Use relative units and a layout that can expand. The following is an illustrative starting point, not a claim that these exact defaults suit every site:
body {
font-family: "Primary Family", system-ui, sans-serif;
font-size: 1rem;
line-height: 1.5;
max-width: 70ch;
margin-inline: auto;
padding-inline: 1rem;
}
p { margin-block: 0 1.5em; }
@media (prefers-reduced-motion: reduce) {
* { scroll-behavior: auto; }
}
The important engineering property is not the brand name of the family. It is that text can grow, lines can reflow and user-applied spacing does not clip content. Check component-specific rules such as fixed heights, overflow: hidden, absolute positioning and horizontally scrolling cards, because those are common points of failure when text expands.
Common selection mistakes
- Declaring a winner from a font category. “Serif is always easier” and “sans serif is always easier” ignore size, rendering, language and reader.
- Confusing visual novelty with accessibility. Unusual letterforms may look distinctive in a specimen but create unfamiliar shapes or poor spacing in continuous text.
- Widening every gap. More letter or word spacing can reduce crowding for some readers, but excessive spacing disrupts word shapes and wrapping. Test combinations rather than applying a blanket increase.
- Using a fixed-height component. A card or button that works at the default line height may clip when a user increases spacing.
- Treating AAA guidance as a default rule. The 80-character line-width guidance belongs to SC 1.4.8’s Level AAA visual-presentation criterion; it is not a universal font requirement.
- Testing only a heading. Body paragraphs, numbers, punctuation and long words expose problems that a large title hides.
The practical answer
An easy-to-read typeface has clearly distinguishable glyphs, proportions and strokes that remain visible at the intended size, and spacing that supports a steady word and line rhythm. Those qualities work only when the page also supplies comfortable line length, line height, contrast, resizing and user-controlled spacing. Select a small group of candidates, compare them in the real task and let readers adjust the presentation; that process is more reliable than searching for one universally “best” font.
