A compliant Google Merchant Center product image shows the exact item for sale, is reachable at a stable image URL, meets the file and size limits, and contains no disallowed promotional overlays or unrelated objects. Submit that hero image in the required image_link attribute, then use the supplementary fields for additional angles and lifestyle context. Google’s official image-link specification is the controlling reference; composition advice such as a white background is a recommendation, not a substitute for the technical rules.
What Google requires in the primary image
Every product needs one primary image in the non-repeated image_link attribute. Its value must be a direct HTTP or HTTPS URL to the image file, between 1 and 2,000 characters, using ASCII characters and RFC 3986-compliant URL formatting. Google supports JPEG, WebP, PNG, GIF, BMP and TIFF; the filename extension should match the file’s actual format.

The image itself must clearly display the exact item being sold. A generic substitute, placeholder or image for a different variant can make the offer ineligible to appear on Google surfaces. Google reports problems in Merchant Center diagnostics when an image does not meet the requirements.

Google’s page also announces that a minimum of 500 × 500 pixels for all products begins on January 31, 2027. That date is future-facing in the current guidance, so do not describe it as a newly active all-product rule before that date. Check the live specification for any category or account-specific updates.

What the image must show—and what gets it disapproved
Show one accurate, unobstructed product
The hero image should make the item identifiable without relying on text or graphics. Match the listing’s exact version, including color, pattern, finish, material, size-specific appearance and customization. For variants, provide a unique image for each offer instead of grouping several colorways in one picture. Do not include products or accessories that are not sold with the main item.
The primary view must be unobstructed. A physical logo, label or pattern that is part of the manufactured product is different from a logo added during editing. Keep the complete silhouette visible rather than cropping off an edge.
Remove placeholders and generic substitutes
- Do not use “Coming soon,” “No image available,” “Photo pending” or similar placeholders.
- Do not replace a product photo with a company logo, stock icon, mockup or generic graphic.
- Do not use a single general image for distinct products when each listing needs its own representation.
- Avoid a single-color square and decorative borders.
Google lists limited category exceptions. Generic imagery may be allowed in Hardware, Vehicles & Parts, and Software > Computer Software. In the computer-software category, a software logo or icon can represent the software. Single-color images are allowed for specified paint and painting-consumable categories. Confirm the item’s actual Google product category before relying on an exception.

Keep promotional overlays out of the image
Do not add calls to action, prices, discounts, shipping claims, extended-warranty or service statements, subjective sales adjectives, condition or compatibility labels, QR codes, barcodes, watermarks, or post-production brand, manufacturer or retailer logos. A superimposed logo is treated differently from branding physically printed on the product. These restrictions apply to the primary image even if the overlaid claim is accurate elsewhere on the product page.
Recommendations that improve presentation
Google’s image best-practices guidance recommends a sharp, well-lit photograph on a solid white or light-neutral background. A staged or lifestyle setting can also clearly show the product, provided the item remains recognizable and the image follows the applicable field’s rules.
- Choose a recognizable front or three-quarter angle.
- Keep the product in focus and avoid blur, compression artifacts and pixelation.
- Frame the item so it occupies roughly 75%–90% of the canvas while preserving its entire silhouette.
- Use approximately 1500 × 1500 pixels or larger when your source photography allows it.
Those are recommendations, not a universal requirement that every primary image be white or occupy an exact percentage of the frame. A compliant image can use another clear presentation when it still meets the mandatory content, URL, format, size and file rules.

The additional-image specification allows supplementary views that would be distracting or unsuitable as the hero image, such as a close-up, packaging view or an image of a product being used. Google’s recommendation for at least five additional images is optional; it does not change the 10-URL attribute maximum.
The lifestyle-image specification sets its own minimum of 600 × 600 pixels and an aspect-ratio range from 2:0 to 2:3. Lifestyle assets must not contain price, shipping, warranty claims, promotional adjectives, overlaid logos, watermarks, barcodes, retailer names or retailer logos. Treat these as field-specific rules rather than assuming an image allowed in one field is automatically acceptable in another.
Can you use AI-generated product images?
Google’s guidance does not impose a blanket ban on generative-AI images. It requires every image created with generative AI to retain metadata identifying that origin. Google gives IPTC DigitalSourceType values as examples and says not to remove embedded tags from images created with tools such as Product Studio.

Metadata preservation does not relax the accuracy rule. An AI-generated scene still needs to represent the exact product, variant and included contents, and it must not add prohibited promotional graphics or unrelated objects. Review the final exported file to ensure the AI-origin tags remain embedded.

Google crawls the image URLs submitted in your product data. Host the file at a stable, directly accessible URL and configure robots.txt, authentication, firewalls and other security controls so both Googlebot and Googlebot-Image can fetch it. A browser test should open the image itself, not a product page, login screen or download requiring a session.

A new or updated image is typically crawled and reviewed within three days, although that is a processing estimate rather than a guaranteed service level.

Why was my product image disapproved?
Start in Merchant Center at Products > Needs attention. Match the diagnostic to the appropriate fix instead of immediately replacing a compliant photograph.
- Check the content warning. Remove prices, discounts, shipping text, warranty claims, calls to action, watermarks, QR codes, barcodes, logos added in post-production, borders and unrelated items.
- Check product identity. Verify that the image matches the exact SKU or variant, including color, pattern, finish, material and bundle contents. Replace generic placeholders, logos and stock graphics.
- Check the file. Confirm a supported format, matching extension, no more than 16 MB, at least 500 × 500 pixels under the current specification, and no more than 64 megapixels.
- Check the URL response. Paste the direct URL into a browser, confirm it returns the raw image, and test from an environment that is not logged in. Correct URL encoding and any access rules blocking Googlebot or Googlebot-Image.
- Check field placement. Keep the clearest exact-product view in
image_link; move alternate or contextual views toadditional_image_linkorlifestyle_image_linkwhile meeting those fields’ separate limits. - Check AI metadata. If generative AI was used, preserve the IPTC DigitalSourceType metadata in the delivered file.
- Publish with a new URL if the old asset is stale. This can avoid the potentially lengthy re-detection period associated with changing pixels at an unchanged address.
For a small image, distinguish the announced all-product 500 × 500 rule beginning January 31, 2027 from the separate recommendation to work at approximately 1500 × 1500 pixels or larger. The recommendation concerns display quality and performance; it is not evidence that every smaller image is already failing for the same reason.
A practical pre-submission checklist
- The
image_linkpoints to one direct, stable HTTP or HTTPS image URL. - The URL uses valid ASCII/RFC 3986 formatting, and its extension matches the file format.
- The file is JPEG, WebP, PNG, GIF, BMP or TIFF, no larger than 16 MB and no more than 64 megapixels.
- The canvas is at least 500 × 500 pixels under Google’s current specification; you have considered a 1500 × 1500-pixel-or-larger source for stronger presentation.
- The exact product and variant are visible, unobstructed and fully represented.
- No placeholder, generic graphic, unrelated accessory, border or prohibited promotional overlay appears.
- Composition is sharp, well lit and easy to recognize; the product generally fills 75%–90% of the frame.
- Additional images, if supplied, stay within 10 URLs; lifestyle images stay within five URLs and meet the 600 × 600 and aspect-ratio rules.
- Googlebot and Googlebot-Image can fetch the URL without authentication or blocking security rules.
- AI-created files retain the required origin metadata.
Following this separation of hard limits, content restrictions and presentation recommendations gives Google a fetchable, accurate asset while preserving useful context in the supplementary image fields.
