There is no universally best sound: one typist’s deep “thock” may be another’s dull or hollow board. Treat every material recommendation as a tendency, because the complete assembly matters more than any isolated part.
The practical way to tune a keyboard is to identify the sound you want, separate it from noises you dislike, and change one compatible component or layer at a time.

Start with the sound you are trying to create
Keyboard enthusiasts commonly describe sound with four informal words:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Term | What listeners generally mean |
|---|---|
| Thock | A lower-pitched, fuller impact. |
| Clack | A sharper, higher-pitched key sound. |
| Hollowness | An empty or reverberant character caused by a cavity or excess internal reflection. |
| Ping | A high-pitched ringing sound, often associated with a spring or a resonating case. |
These are useful hobbyist descriptions, not formal acoustic categories. A board can be deep but too hollow, sharp but pleasingly crisp, or quiet in its switches while still producing a ringing case. Decide whether your priority is a lower pitch, a brighter clack, a clicky character, or simply less volume before buying parts or opening the case.

How a keystroke becomes sound
Each press creates several overlapping events: the switch moves and returns, the spring can vibrate, the keycap transmits the impact, the switch is held by a plate, and the plate and case carry vibration through the mounting system. Bottoming out and returning from the press can add separate impacts. The case then either absorbs those vibrations or reflects them inside its cavity.
That interaction explains why changing one part does not guarantee a predictable result. A thick keycap on a stiff metal plate may sound different from the same keycap on a flexible plastic plate. Foam can remove a ringing reflection but also filter frequencies that made the board sound open. Listen to the complete board rather than judging a material in isolation.
Switches: impact, spring noise, and bottom-out
What the switch contributes
The switch determines how the stem moves, where resistance changes, and how the press and release strike the surrounding parts. Its housing and internal mechanism create a characteristic impact, while the spring may add a faint metallic ring. A switch that feels smooth can still produce an unwanted ping if its spring resonates.
Spring ping is a separate problem
Spring ping is the high note produced inside or around the switch spring. Filling the case with foam may reduce the way that note is reflected, but it does not remove the vibration at its source. Switch lubrication is one tuning approach discussed by keyboard builders; it must be compatible with the switch and applied carefully, and it does not guarantee a particular pitch or feel.

Bottom-out and return impact
The sound of the stem or slider reaching the end of its travel is distinct from spring noise. If the loud event occurs exactly when a key reaches the bottom, the switch, keycap, plate, and typing technique are all involved. A softer mounting system can change how that impact is transmitted, while a stiffer assembly can make it feel and sound more immediate. Do not assume that treating a spring will fix a loud bottom-out.
Plate material and mounting change both pitch and feel
The plate holds the switches in alignment and spreads each keystroke through the keyboard. Its material and the way it is attached affect how much vibration is transmitted and how much flex the assembly has.
| Construction choice | General tendency described by keyboard builders | Feel or trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Denser metals such as brass or copper | Often a higher-pitched, clackier response. | Harder, firmer typing feel; less flex. |
| Softer plastics such as polycarbonate or POM | Often a lower-pitched response. | More compliance and potentially more flex. |
| Gasket mounting | Compliant material isolates portions of the assembly and can soften impacts. | More give, but the sound depends on the gasket, plate, case, and fit. |
| Rigid mounting | Vibration is coupled more directly through the structure. | Firmer and more immediate; resonance may be more apparent. |
These are broad tendencies, not rules. A dense plate can sound less sharp after damping, and a plastic plate can still sound bright if the keycaps and case emphasize higher frequencies. Check the plate cutout, mounting method, layout, and available space before choosing a replacement.
Keycaps: plastic, thickness, and profile
PBT versus ABS
Keycap plastic changes how the key is struck and how the cap itself vibrates. PBT sets commonly produce a somewhat deeper character, while ABS often sounds a little clackier. The result varies substantially with the individual set, wall construction, profile, and thickness, so the plastic label is not a guarantee.

Thickness matters
Very thin caps can produce a lighter, sharper response. When aiming for a fuller sound, the practical guidance is to avoid caps around 1 mm or thinner and to consider roughly 1.3–1.5 mm as a useful thickness range. That range is guidance rather than a measured acoustic standard. Thick caps can still sound bright on a hard plate, and a thin cap can sound acceptable in a well-damped case.
Profile and hollow space
Taller keycap profiles may shift the sound deeper because they add volume around the switch. The same added space can also make the board sound hollow if the cavity reinforces reverberation. Profile changes also alter typing angle and key travel perception, so select a profile for both sound and comfort.
Check compatibility before buying
- Confirm the set matches your keyboard’s layout, including non-standard bottom-row keys, split spacebars, or unusual right-side modifiers.
- Check that the caps use the correct switch-stem interface.
- Verify that the profile is compatible with your row arrangement; sculpted profiles cannot always be rearranged freely.
- Make sure the added height will not interfere with the case, plate, or stabilizers.
Case acoustics: why a board sounds hollow
An empty case cavity can reflect each keystroke, creating reverberation and a hollow quality. Case material, internal volume, seams, standoffs, and openings all affect that reflection. A keyboard can therefore sound resonant even when its switches and keycaps are quiet.
Damping materials
Builders commonly use purpose-made keyboard foam, neoprene, silicone, shelf liner, sorbothane, automotive sound-deadening material, or poly-fil to reduce internal reflection. Materials differ in softness, thickness, mass, and effectiveness. The goal is not to fill every millimetre; it is to reduce the specific cavity or panel that is ringing.

Fit is part of the acoustic design
Cut damping around ports, screws, standoffs, batteries, daughterboards, and wiring. In a gasket-mounted or otherwise flexible build, material that is too thick or too stiff can compress the assembly, block movement, or change the intended flex. Keep the layer thin or compliant enough that moving parts remain free.
Foam layers can improve one quality while hurting another
Plate foam, case foam, PE foam, and switch films act in different locations, so they do not produce the same change. A layer between the plate and PCB can alter impact transmission; material under the PCB can reduce cavity reflections; a film inside a switch can change housing movement and high-frequency emphasis.
More foam is not automatically better. A tuned board may lose an unwanted resonance after a layer is added, yet sound overly filtered or muted. Removing that layer can restore openness while bringing back some ringing. Make one change, reinstall the case, and listen again before stacking additional materials.

Case ping or spring ping?
Tap the case gently away from the switches and compare that ring with a key press. A ring from the shell or plate points toward structural resonance and may respond to case or plate damping. A high note that follows individual switch presses points more strongly toward spring or switch noise; case foam alone is unlikely to solve it.

Hollowness
Hollowness usually becomes obvious when a key sounds as though it is echoing inside a box. Inspect the empty cavity, large flat panels, and gaps around the PCB. A carefully fitted compliant layer can reduce the reflection, but listen for excessive muting after the change.
Stabilizer rattle
Long keys can add a separate mechanical rattle that masks the switch sound. Treat that as a stabilizer issue rather than changing the entire plate or keycap set. The relevant intervention depends on the stabilizer design and must not obstruct its movement.
Loud bottom-out
If the loudest event coincides with the end of the key travel, compare a softer or more compliant mounting arrangement with the existing one and assess the keycap and plate together. Do not confuse this impact with a spring’s ringing note.

A step-by-step tuning workflow
- Record the baseline. Type a short, repeatable passage and note whether the dominant issue is pitch, hollowness, ping, rattle, or bottom-out. Use the same desk and typing force for each comparison.
- Set a target. Choose one outcome—deeper, sharper, quieter, less resonant, or more flexible—rather than trying to maximize every quality at once.
- Try the least invasive change first. A compatible keycap set changes the acoustic surface without requiring case disassembly. Verify layout, stem, profile, and thickness before installation.
- Inspect the assembly. Identify the plate material, mounting method, internal cavity, and any existing foam. Confirm that replacement parts physically fit the layout and screw or gasket locations.
- Address the actual source. Use case or plate damping for structural resonance, consider compatible switch lubrication for spring ping, and investigate stabilizers when only long keys rattle.
- Add or remove one layer at a time. Test case foam, plate foam, PE foam, or switch films separately. Record whether the change removes resonance, reduces clarity, or alters flex.
- Reassemble carefully. Keep ports, standoffs, wiring, gaskets, and moving parts clear. A trapped or compressed layer can create new noises and change the intended mounting feel.
- Retest the same passage. Compare the result at normal typing speed and force. Stop when the unwanted sound is controlled without sacrificing the feel and openness you prefer.
Choose components by goal, not by a “best” material
| Your priority | Parts or changes to investigate | Main caution |
|---|---|---|
| Lower, fuller character | Moderately thick keycaps, softer plastic plate options, and measured cavity damping. | Taller caps or heavy damping can introduce hollowness or over-muting. |
| Sharper clack | Keycap sets and plate constructions that naturally emphasize higher frequencies. | A hard, resonant case can turn clarity into unwanted ping. |
| Less case resonance | Precisely fitted case or plate damping. | Too much or too-stiff material can reduce flex and filter the sound. |
| Less spring ping | Switch inspection and compatible lubrication. | Case damping does not directly cure noise generated in the spring. |
| More flex and softer impact | Compliant mounting systems and softer plate materials. | Check that added foam does not compress or block the flexible assembly. |
Compatibility and modification checklist
- Match the keycap layout and stem interface.
- Confirm plate, PCB, case, and mounting compatibility before ordering or cutting material.
- Measure cavity depth and leave clearance for ports, screws, standoffs, batteries, and wiring.
- Keep gasket strips and other flexible parts able to move as designed.
- Expect sound and feel to change together; a quieter board may also become less open or less flexible.
- Change one variable at a time so you can identify what actually helped.
The practical answer
A satisfying mechanical keyboard is a balanced system, not a single switch, plastic, or foam recipe. Start with the sound vocabulary you prefer, separate case resonance from spring noise and bottom-out, then tune the least invasive component that addresses the problem. Thick or thin keycaps, metal or plastic plates, rigid or gasket mounting, and damping layers all carry trade-offs. The best result is the combination that gives you the pitch, impact, clarity, and feel you want without the specific rattle, hollowness, or ping you dislike.
