A good Linux distribution release artwork is more than an attractive wallpaper. It gives a release a recognizable visual idea, scales into a coordinated set of wallpapers and promotional graphics, remains useful across languages and future versions, arrives in editable formats, and has rights that the project can legally distribute. The strongest work is judged as a complete, maintainable contribution: concept, composition, source files, licensing, and technical fit all matter.
What “release artwork” includes
Release artwork is the visual package that changes with a distribution release. Fedora’s documentation describes it this way: “Release artwork is that part of Fedora artwork that changes with each new release.” A wallpaper is usually the most visible piece, but a release package can also include installer and website banners, login or desktop splashes, posters, disc labels, countdown graphics, sleeves, and other promotional assets.
That range changes the design problem. A composition that looks balanced on a desktop may fail when cropped into a narrow banner. A detailed illustration may work as a poster but become visual noise behind desktop icons. Good artwork therefore starts with a central idea and a flexible visual system, not a single finished bitmap.
1. Begin with a release concept, not decoration
Connect the idea to the release identity
Fedora’s release-artwork process recommends starting with an abstract concept connected to the release name. The useful general principle is to give every release a visual idea that people can recognize without reading an explanation. The connection might come from a metaphor, shape, material, movement, landscape, scientific idea, or cultural reference suggested by the name.

Abstraction is usually more durable than a literal illustration. If a release name evokes a place, drawing that place exactly can limit the work to one interpretation and one layout. A visual metaphor—layers, orbiting forms, a particular rhythm of light, or a repeating structure—can communicate identity while leaving room for wallpaper, banners, and other formats.
Check whether the idea survives without a caption
Write the concept in one sentence, then remove the sentence from the image. Someone who sees the artwork should still sense a coherent mood and structure. This does not mean every viewer must guess the release name; it means the visual should feel intentional rather than like a generic gradient or stock illustration.
- Recognizable: the release has a distinct visual signature instead of a random collection of effects.
- Flexible: the idea can be simplified, repeated, or rearranged for different placements.
- Appropriate: the tone fits the distribution’s audience and design language.
- Legible: the focal subject remains clear at both full-screen and thumbnail sizes.
2. Design a visual system, not just a wallpaper
Once the concept is chosen, define the elements that make the package consistent: palette, lighting, shape language, texture, grid, typography treatment for supporting layouts, and rules for where a focal point may sit. The wallpaper can be the hero image, but every related asset should look like part of the same release.

Plan these crops early. A wallpaper stretched into a banner often puts the subject under a logo or removes the negative space needed for text. Create intentional variants instead: a wide composition, a tall or square crop, and simplified versions for small placements. Keep the same palette and visual grammar so the variants feel related rather than duplicated.
3. Make the image travel across languages and releases
Avoid words embedded in the wallpaper
Fedora’s artwork overview advises avoiding words in wallpapers because text is difficult to translate and the themes may be reused by derivatives. This is a practical rule for globally distributed software: a text-free image does not need a new export for every language, and users can keep it when they upgrade or switch language settings.
Text may still be necessary in a banner, poster, installer panel, or countdown graphic. Put that copy in a separate editable layout, not permanently inside the core wallpaper. Maintain language-neutral artwork layers and add localized text as a controlled variant.
Do not bake in a version number unless the brief requires it
Fedora also recommends avoiding release version numbers in wallpapers so users can continue using a theme on older releases. A permanent “version X” label quickly dates an otherwise useful image. If a particular campaign needs a number, place it in a separate promotional asset with its own source file.
Logos and project marks need separate treatment. The guidance considered here does not define comprehensive logo-placement rules, so follow the current distribution’s brand guidance rather than assuming that a mark belongs on every image.

4. Deliver editable, maintainable files
A polished export is not enough for a community project that may need to correct, translate, recolor, resize, or repurpose the artwork. Fedora prefers formats readable by software available in Fedora, naming SVG and PNG as preferred image formats. Its guidance also asks contributors to retain non-lossy masters with layers, channels, and vectors intact. Debian’s artwork requirements likewise call for source artwork that can be modified in the future with free software.

Use software that contributors to the target distribution can realistically open. Package the source with linked images, fonts or font information, color profiles where relevant, and a short README identifying the entry point, required assets, license, and export settings. Open the package on a second machine or in a clean environment before submission; a source file that only works on the original creator’s computer is not maintainable.
5. Match the actual display and submission requirements
Technical fit is project-specific. Check the current call for submissions or artwork brief for accepted formats, aspect ratios, color requirements, maximum file sizes, naming conventions, and delivery dates. Do not treat an old example as a universal rule.

For context, Fedora’s historical supplemental-wallpaper guidance preferred a 16:9 ratio where possible and gave 2560×1440 as a common sufficient example, while noting that larger resolution was welcome. That page concerns supplemental wallpaper and is not a current cross-distribution requirement. A present-day project may request different sizes or several variants.
Test the composition at real desktop conditions
- Preview the image at the target desktop resolutions, not only zoomed inside an editor.
- Check common aspect ratios and cropping behavior, including ultrawide and laptop screens when the brief calls for them.
- Place sample desktop icons, a panel, and a dock over the image. Keep the focal subject and important contrast away from likely obstructions.
- Inspect both light and dark desktop interface settings if the distribution supports them.
- Confirm that fine lines and low-contrast textures survive scaling and compression.
6. Treat licensing and permissions as design requirements
Rights are part of acceptance, not paperwork added at the end. Fedora says contributions must be covered by its Contributor License Agreement and warns that incorporated art must use a compatible license, with attribution where required. Debian asks contributors to state the license under which artwork may be distributed with Debian and also requires modifiable source files.
Record the origin and permission for every external element: photographs, textures, typefaces, brushes, 3D models, icons, and code-generated assets. A generic Creative Commons label is not automatically acceptable; attribution, share-alike, noncommercial, or other conditions can conflict with a project’s distribution terms. Confirm the project’s current contributor agreement and license policy before publishing a submission.

Include author names, license text or identifiers, attribution notices, and links to upstream assets inside the source package when required. If an element’s rights cannot be demonstrated, replace it with an original or clearly compatible alternative. Do not rely on “it was found online” as permission.

- Read the current brief. Record the target release, deadlines, required assets, accepted formats, licensing terms, and any brand constraints.
- Generate several concepts. Explore metaphors related to the release name rather than polishing the first attractive effect.
- Stress-test the finalists. Make quick wallpaper, banner, installer, and small-format mockups. Reject concepts that only work in one rectangle.
- Select a visual system. Define palette, contrast range, shapes, texture, lighting, and rules for focal-point placement.
- Build the master. Keep vectors, layers, masks, channels, and linked resources editable. Avoid irreversible flattening until export.
- Create intentional variants. Produce the crops and supporting graphics named in the brief instead of stretching one file everywhere.
- Run technical and rights checks. Reopen the files with project-available software, inspect dimensions and color settings, and verify every license and attribution.
- Package for another contributor. Use clear filenames, include a README and license metadata, and provide final exports alongside the source files.
8. How to compare candidate concepts
When several submissions are plausible, score them against the same questions rather than choosing only the most visually dramatic image.

Common failure modes and fixes
The wallpaper is beautiful but impossible to reuse
Cause: A large title, slogan, or version number is fused into the image. Fix: Keep the core artwork text-free and supply separate localized or campaign-specific layouts.
Every asset looks like a different project
Cause: Supporting graphics were produced independently after the wallpaper was finished. Fix: Define shared color, shape, texture, and spacing rules before making variants, then reuse source elements.
The focal point vanishes behind the desktop interface
Cause: The composition was judged without icons, docks, or panels. Fix: Test realistic desktop screenshots and move essential detail into quieter, visible areas.

Cause: A flattened image, missing fonts, broken links, or proprietary-only format was submitted. Fix: Preserve non-lossy masters, vectors, layers, channels, linked assets, and an export README; verify reopening with software available to the project.
Licensing is discovered too late
Cause: Stock textures, fonts, or copied images were added without recording terms. Fix: Track rights while creating the work, replace uncertain elements, and include required attribution and license information in the package.
Final submission checklist
- The concept is recognizable without explanatory text and fits the release identity.
- The package includes every required placement, with intentional crops and variants.
- The core wallpaper avoids unnecessary words and release version numbers when broad reuse is intended.
- Final files use the formats, dimensions, aspect ratios, and color settings in the current project brief.
- Editable vectors and non-lossy layered masters are included, with all linked resources.
- Another contributor can reopen and modify the source using project-available free software.
- Every incorporated asset has documented permission, attribution, and license compatibility.
- Contributor agreements and submission metadata are complete.
- Desktop previews show that panels, docks, icons, and common crops do not hide the focal subject.
- Filenames, README instructions, and export settings make the package understandable without the original creator.
The best Linux distribution release artwork succeeds simultaneously as communication, interface decoration, and an open project asset. A memorable concept earns attention; a coherent family of layouts gives the release a presence; text-free and version-neutral core artwork extends its life; editable files let the community maintain it; and verified rights make distribution possible. Judge the work on that complete contribution, not on a single screenshot.
