An NHL goalie wins the larger share of starts by giving the coaching staff the strongest overall case—not by reaching a league-wide statistical cutoff. Coaches weigh performance and consistency alongside health, mental readiness, rest, schedule, opponent, workload and confidence in the other goalie. Because many teams use tandems, “starter” often means the goalie who plays more, not someone guaranteed the crease all season.
What coaches weigh when choosing a goalie
The choice is an ongoing judgment about which available goalie gives the team its best chance in a particular game. A strong performance can help, but one win or loss does not settle the role. Coaches consider form over time and whether the goalie is ready to play effectively.

Performance and consistency
Coaches look beyond a single result or box-score line. Video review can help them assess how a goalie reads plays, handles situations and executes the team’s desired structure. The cited coach accounts do not establish a universal save-percentage, goals-against average or games-played threshold that automatically earns the job.

Physical health matters, as does a goalie’s mental state and need for recovery. An injury, fatigue or a coach’s concern about readiness can change the plan regardless of who has held the larger role previously. NHL.com contributor and goaltending coach David Marcoux describes these as part of an ongoing assessment, rather than a decision based on seniority alone.

Preparation and opponent
Goalie coaches may use video to study opposing shooters and identify tendencies, then discuss what they see with other coaches and the goalies. Kraken goalie coach Colin Zulianello described pattern recognition as a way to anticipate how plays may develop. That account illustrates one coaching process; teams are not bound to a single league-wide evaluation method.
Why the schedule and workload change the decision
Rest, travel, recent workload and upcoming games can all affect who starts. Marcoux described late-season planning as a combined judgment about standings, travel, schedule, prior and expected workload, and injuries. The closer the standings, the more consequential a matchup may feel, but that does not erase the need to manage a goalie’s availability and recovery.

Back-to-backs are a common example: coaches often divide the two games between tandem partners. The choice can depend on the opponent and how long each goalie has rested, not simply on which goalie is labeled No. 1.

The same explainer noted that later analyses by SMT’s Andrew Thomas and The Athletic’s Dom Luszczyszyn found the effect may be less significant. Treat that figure as a reported historical study result, not a settled current estimate or a prediction about an individual goalie.

Starter, backup or tandem?
The traditional picture of one clear No. 1 playing most games still exists, but NHL teams have become more comfortable sharing starts when their goalies are close in ability. A “1A/1B” tandem can let a team manage workload while keeping both goalies involved. The balance varies by roster, form and schedule; there is no rule that every team must use a strict starter-and-backup hierarchy.
Sharing starts also serves a practical purpose: the second goalie needs game opportunities to maintain rhythm and confidence, and the team needs that goalie ready if the leader is injured or loses form. But a long stretch without starts can leave a backup short of game rhythm, so coaches balance preserving the leading goalie’s workload against keeping the alternative prepared.

How a goalie can earn the role during camp or the season
A starting job may be contested in training camp or shift during the season as performance, health and team needs change. For example, NHL.com reported on September 9, 2026, that New Jersey brought Jake Allen, David Rittich and Nico Daws to camp with the top job open, with a development opportunity possible for Daws. That was a Devils-specific snapshot, not a league-wide selection formula.
Carrying three goalies is possible, but it does not guarantee better coverage. In the same report, San Jose director of goaltending Evgeni Nabokov cautioned that “One goalie can get hot, while the other two get rusty.” Coaches must consider whether each goalie will get enough practice and game work to stay ready.

What does not decide the job on its own
No cited source establishes that wins, save percentage, goals-against average, draft status, salary or reputation alone determines who starts. Those details may inform discussion, but the reported coaching decisions combine performance with readiness, workload, schedule and confidence in the other goalie. There is no magic number that guarantees the job.
