Start with a resolution your graphics card can run at the frame rates you want, then compare refresh rate, variable refresh rate (VRR), image quality, and the exact ports and modes you need. Pay extra for features you will use, and verify performance on the specific model rather than relying on a headline specification.
What makes a gaming monitor cheap?
There is no stable price threshold that defines “cheap” across countries, retailers, and sale dates. A lower-cost model may trade off resolution, refresh rate, panel characteristics, HDR performance, stand adjustments, or connectivity. Which trade-offs matter depends on the monitor, your market, and how you play.

That means the useful question is not simply how little a monitor costs. It is whether its compromises affect your games, computer or console, and room. Manufacturer buying guides likewise frame resolution, refresh rate, and other capabilities as criteria to compare, rather than defining one universal budget tier. See Intel’s gaming monitor guide, Dell’s monitor guidance, and NVIDIA’s G-SYNC monitor information.

- Start with your device and games. Competitive PC games, slower-paced story games, and console play can call for different priorities. Note the system you will connect and the games you care about most.
- Choose a resolution your graphics hardware can sustain. Resolution and refresh rate are separate decisions, but both draw on the system’s rendering capability. A high-resolution monitor may look sharper, while a lower resolution can make it easier for a system to produce more frames. Pick for the frame rates you can realistically achieve in your games, not just the largest number on a spec sheet. See Intel, Dell, and NVIDIA.
- Match refresh rate to likely frame rates. A higher refresh rate can display more frames per second, but it only helps to the extent your system supplies frames that can use it. Avoid paying for a refresh-rate target your hardware and games rarely reach.
- Check VRR support if frame rates fluctuate. Variable refresh rate coordinates the display’s refresh with changing graphics output, helping reduce tearing and stutter. Confirm that the exact monitor, GPU, connection, and system support the feature together; do not assume that similar branding guarantees compatibility.
- Compare measured performance where possible. Look for independent tests of the exact model covering response behavior, input lag, brightness, contrast, and screen uniformity. A manufacturer’s response-time figure is a specification, not a full account of how motion looks in practice.
- Check inputs and supported modes before buying. Verify the exact HDMI and DisplayPort specifications, refresh modes, and VRR support. If you are buying for a console, confirm the required console modes; Dell’s gaming monitor guidance identifies HDMI 2.1 VRR as important for console gaming.
- Check practical fit. Compare stand adjustments, mounting support, warranty, and any connection or mode requirements against the exact model’s specifications.
Which features are worth paying for?
Resolution and refresh rate that fit your hardware
These are core gaming-monitor choices, but maximizing both by default can be a poor use of your budget. Higher resolution asks more of the graphics hardware; a faster refresh rate is most useful when the system can provide enough frames to take advantage of it. Choose the combination that fits your games and target frame rates. Intel and Dell both identify resolution and refresh rate among the main criteria to consider in a gaming display: Intel and Dell.

- 【INTEGRATED SPEAKERS】Whether you're at work or in the midst of an intense gaming session, our built-in speakers provide rich and seamless audio, all while keeping your desk clutter-free.
- 【EASY ON THE EYES】 Protect your eyes and enhance your comfort with Blue-Light Shift technology. This feature reduces harmful blue light emissions from your screen, helping to alleviate eye strain during long hours of use and promoting healthier viewing habits.
- 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.
Compatible VRR
VRR is useful when frame rates vary because it lets a compatible display adjust refresh in step with graphics output. AMD describes this function for FreeSync displays, while NVIDIA describes G-SYNC Compatible monitors as VRR screens validated for its ecosystem. Check the specific GPU, monitor, input, and configuration before treating a label as proof that a particular setup will work. See AMD FreeSync and NVIDIA G-SYNC monitor information.
Image quality suited to your room and games
Compare contrast, color, viewing angles, and brightness for the content you play and the room where you use the screen. Panel labels can help narrow the options, but they do not replace measurements of the exact model. A feature that improves one aspect of the picture may not make the monitor a better fit for every viewer.

Response behavior backed by model-specific testing
Refresh rate and response behavior both affect motion, but a quoted response-time number alone cannot tell you how a monitor performs across its settings. If motion clarity matters, seek independent tests of the exact model rather than assuming a marketing figure proves fast, clean transitions.
HDR with evidence of meaningful capability
Treat a generic HDR label as a prompt to investigate, not a guarantee of a particular brightness, contrast, or picture quality. Intel points buyers to VESA DisplayHDR certification as an indication that specifications were tested and verified under that program. Certification is useful evidence, but the experience still depends on the display itself. See Intel’s monitor guide and VESA DisplayHDR.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Ports and console-specific support
Pay for a connection or mode only if your device needs it, but verify that it is actually present on the exact model. Check HDMI and DisplayPort versions, supported resolution and refresh combinations, and VRR behavior. For console use, HDMI 2.1 VRR may be a deciding requirement; the port name alone is not enough, so confirm supported modes in the manufacturer’s specification.
