A traditional third-person Soulslike can show the avatar, its weapon motion, and more of the immediate surroundings at once. Those camera differences shape how combat feels, but perspective alone does not make a game Soulslike: its combat, risk and reward, exploration, atmosphere, and world structure matter too.
How perspective changes what you can read in a fight
In first person, the player aims at close-range, moving enemies through the camera, while much of their own body and nearby space sits outside the normal view. Weapon animation, camera framing, sound, and enemy reactions therefore carry much of the information about an attack’s reach and whether it connected.

Third-person framing can show the avatar and more of the immediate space together, helping players see body motion and enemy position at the same time. That is a camera-based distinction, not evidence that third-person combat is automatically clearer or easier; neither view removes the need for readable timing, hitboxes, and feedback.
Why first-person melee needs deliberate design
Raphael Colantonio, then creative director at Arkane Studios, described the challenge of building melee for Dark Messiah: “We didn’t want Half Life 2 with a sword instead of the crowbar.” His point was that sword fighting could not simply inherit the conventions of first-person shooting.

In an account of the game’s design, Arkane identified several practical problems:
- Aiming at moving targets at close range: the player’s view and weapon must stay useful as an enemy moves around.
- Judging distance: what looks within reach may not match the attack’s actual range.
- Seeing the attack and its result: strikes can happen below the player’s field of view, and damage needs to be communicated without showing the player character’s full reaction from outside.
Arkane’s responses included exaggerated animations, separately manipulable body models, a wider field of view, and more forgiving enemy hit zones. These are documented choices for Dark Messiah, not universal techniques or requirements for every first-person action game. Game Developer’s account of Colantonio’s GDC session describes the problems and trade-offs.

What makes a game Soulslike is separate from its camera
There is no universally agreed formal definition of “Soulslike” in the developer interviews available here. Developers have pointed instead to qualities such as deliberate combat, meaningful risk and reward, purposeful exploration, atmosphere, and mystery. They also differ on how central difficulty is and where genre boundaries fall.

As James Silva, lead on Salt and Sanctuary at Ska Studios, put it: “Because you can make very poor decisions, making very good decisions feels meaningful.” That captures one useful design idea, not a complete checklist for classifying games. A first-person camera can coexist with Soulslike systems and pacing; it neither proves nor rules out the label.

Examples: Valor Mortis and the first-person lineage
Valor Mortis makes the Soulslike connection explicit
Developers describe Valor Mortis as close to Dark Souls in format, despite its first-person view. A developer account points to souls retrieval, bonfire-like checkpoints, challenging bosses, and backtracking to find secrets as parts of that framing. These systems and world structures—not the camera by itself—make the comparison meaningful. GamesRadar+ reported the developers’ description and examples.
One More Level’s Szymon Bryła, head of studio and CEO, said the scarcity of games in this mold was both a draw and a risk: “The fact that there are practically no such games on the market is and was fascinating, but at the same time, it posed a significant risk in every respect.” This is the studio’s observation, not a measured count of the market. Insider Gaming’s interview report discusses the project’s perspective and motivation.

Lunacid points to an older first-person lineage
First-person fantasy role-playing games predate the modern Soulslike label. Lunacid developer Kira cited King’s Field and Shadow Tower as influences, while describing modernizations to gameplay, movement, inventory, and fast travel. That establishes a lineage of influence; it does not make Lunacid identical to a traditional Soulslike. GameSpot’s interview with the developer covers those inspirations and design choices.
