The strongest pick fills a clear gap in the roster, gives players a reason to care, turns its identity into readable mechanics, remains approachable without becoming shallow, and can be finished and balanced to the game’s quality standard. Fan demand is useful evidence, but it is only one input in a decision that also involves variety, accessibility, competitive health, audience fit and production feasibility.
No published source establishes a universal formula for selecting DLC fighters or a reliable way to predict commercial success. The practical question is therefore not “Who is most popular?” but “What does this character add, and can the team deliver that addition responsibly?”

Start with the roster gap, not the wish list
Every new fighter occupies limited design space. If the candidate behaves like an existing character, the purchase may feel cosmetic rather than meaningful. A pick is stronger when it introduces a different range profile, movement pattern, resource system, defensive problem or decision-making rhythm.

Bandai Namco’s SOULCALIBUR VI community response described the principle directly: “Key consideration when coming up with styles is to not have overlapping personalities and traits to avoid characters being too similar.” The point is broader than avoiding duplicate move lists. Personality, animation, weapon choice and tactical behavior should all help the character occupy a recognizable place in the roster.

Look for a new tactical problem
A candidate can contribute through zoning, close-range pressure, stance changes, mobility, summons, traps, charge mechanics or some other interaction that existing fighters do not already express. The mechanic does not have to be unprecedented in the genre; it has to create a distinct set of choices in this game.
Ask what an opponent must learn when facing the newcomer. If the answer is only “the same matchup, with slightly different numbers,” the pick is probably weak. If the answer identifies a new spacing rule, timing challenge or resource to track, the character has a clearer reason to exist.
Distinctiveness includes personality
Mechanical uniqueness without a readable identity can make a fighter feel assembled rather than authored. Bandai Namco also said, “Additionally, characters are developed to match multiple players’ needs.” That suggests a roster role should be considered from more than one player’s perspective: a character can serve competitive specialists, casual players, fans of a particular fantasy and people looking for an accessible entry point.
Demand matters, but popularity is not a selection formula
Audience interest is a legitimate reason to investigate a candidate. Ed Boon explained the role of requests in a PlayStation.Blog interview: “Each DLC character, I believe, satisfies a certain group of our audience that we knew was clamoring for it.” The same interview also described developer enthusiasm and the appeal of an unexpected guest as additional considerations.
That combination matters because online demand is an incomplete signal. A heavily requested character may still duplicate an existing archetype, require disproportionate animation work or be difficult to balance. Conversely, a less obvious pick can succeed if it opens a new play style and has a clear story or franchise rationale. Demand should establish that an audience exists; it should not decide the entire case.
Separate kinds of audience value
- Continuity: A returning character can reward long-term players and preserve an important relationship with the series.
- Discovery: A new or unexpected character can reach players who are not already invested in the roster.
- Fictional significance: A story role, rivalry or setting connection can make the addition feel timely rather than arbitrary.
- Play-style demand: Players may be asking for a particular way to play, not merely a particular name.
These are different reasons to care, and a candidate does not need to satisfy all of them. The useful test is whether the audience rationale is specific enough to explain why this character belongs in this game now.

Make the character’s identity visible in play
A successful adaptation turns fiction into decisions the player can make and the opponent can understand. Bandai Namco Studios, discussing SOULCALIBUR VI production, described connecting a battle-system idea to a character’s story and personality. That connection is what separates a licensed costume from a designed fighter.

Translate signature traits into mechanics
Start with the character’s defining verbs. A horror villain might stalk, ambush or control space; a weapons expert might switch tools or exploit precise openings; a trickster might create misleading situations. Those verbs can guide normals, specials, resources, animations, sound cues and win conditions.
Ed Boon gave a concrete example when discussing Freddy Krueger: the team expressed the character through a claw-focused moveset and presentation that evoked the source identity. The lesson is not that every guest needs a literal prop. It is that the moves should communicate who the character is before a player reads a biography.
Keep references readable
Faithful details are valuable only when they improve play. A visual effect that obscures a hitbox, a complicated reference that newer players cannot interpret or a passive rule hidden in a cinematic can weaken the design. The best adaptations make the reference legible through ordinary interaction: opponents can see the threat, understand the timing and learn what the character is trying to do.
Balance for the whole player base
A DLC fighter is judged in ranked matches, tournaments, local sessions and first-time games. Designing only for elite competition can produce a character that is technically fair but inaccessible; designing only for immediate fun can create a matchup that overwhelms the roster.
Bandai Namco said it monitors high-level matches while also considering why players at all levels lose. Yoshinori Ono made a related point in a Street Fighter V interview: “We try and pick people in a way that there’s a balanced selection of characters so the players have a level playing field when they want to get started.” Selection and balance are linked: a roster that offers varied but understandable paths into the game is healthier than one that reserves effective play for specialists.

Test both strength and comprehension
- Competitive test: Does the character have answers without creating a dominant, low-risk strategy?
- Learning test: Can a new player understand the basic game plan from animations, effects and frame-timing cues?
- Counterplay test: Can opponents identify what to block, interrupt, punish or avoid?
- Skill-depth test: Does mastery come from meaningful decisions rather than obscure rules or execution gates?
DLC characters receive especially intense balance scrutiny because players can perceive them as exceptions to the roster’s established rules. A DiGRA conference paper analyzing player experience around DLC characters discusses the frustration that follows perceived imbalance. That paper is an academic analysis, not a measured statistic about every fighting-game community, but it explains why a character that appears pay-to-win or poorly explained can damage trust even before tournament results settle.
Use production feasibility as a design criterion
A concept is not a good DLC pick if the team cannot finish it to the game’s standards. Feasibility includes far more than a list of special moves: animation, hit reactions, camera behavior, voice work, stage interactions, story scenes, visual effects, tutorials, accessibility options and testing all have to fit together.
Matt Dahlgren said Street Fighter V’s post-launch characters were still in development and would be released once finished. That approach treats completion quality as part of the selection decision, not a promise to repair an unfinished fighter after launch.

Some characters require bespoke systems. A giant form may need unique collision rules; a stance character may need extra animation coverage; a guest fighter may require approvals for every reference. None of those requirements automatically disqualifies a pick, but they raise the delivery burden and the number of ways a late change can affect the roster.
Arc System Works’ Developer’s Backyard Vol. 20, published September 29, 2026, described extensive battle playtests for upcoming Guilty Gear -Strive- fighters. The update said, “From the Guest Character in Winter 2026 to the fourth character in Spring 2027, we’re crafting fighters with completely distinct appeal and gameplay styles,” and added, “Development is progressing smoothly, and we’re currently conducting extensive battle playtests to polish every detail.” Those are plans and status statements for that release schedule, not proof that every announced character will ship on a particular date; future timing can change.
Check how the pick fits the season and roster
Even a strong individual design can be a poor seasonal choice if it arrives beside several fighters with the same audience or tactical function. Season planning is an editorial comparison axis rather than a universal developer rule, but it helps reveal gaps that a character-by-character review misses.

Map the surrounding releases by archetype, complexity, fiction and audience. A technically demanding fighter may be better paired with a more approachable addition. A guest character can provide visibility while a returning character reinforces the game’s own story. The goal is not to impose a fixed ratio of returning to new fighters; it is to avoid a sequence that feels repetitive or inaccessible.
A practical candidate comparison framework
When two or more candidates are plausible, compare them with the same questions instead of letting the loudest request dominate. The following worksheet turns the evidence into a repeatable editorial decision.
| Axis | Evidence of a strong pick | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Roster contribution | A distinct archetype, mechanic, range pattern or matchup problem | Minor parameter changes on an existing role |
| Audience rationale | Specific fan, story, franchise or play-style interest | Popularity asserted without a clear reason to care |
| Identity-to-gameplay fit | Personality and source traits are visible in decisions, animation and presentation | References appear only in names, costumes or cut-scenes |
| Balance and accessibility | Depth for experts, readable counterplay and a fair entry point | Power comes from opacity, unavoidable pressure or unexplained rules |
| Production feasibility | Moves, interactions and testing fit the team’s quality bar | Large bespoke requirements with no credible testing path |
| Season fit | Complements the surrounding release plan and intended audience | Repeats the same role or complexity as adjacent releases |
Step 1: Define the missing roster function
Write one sentence describing the gap: for example, a mid-range fighter with a resource decision, an approachable grappler or a character who changes how players contest the air. Then test whether the candidate actually fills that sentence. If the description works equally well for several existing fighters, the gap is not specific enough.
Step 2: Describe the audience reason
List the concrete groups that would care and why. Include existing fans, potential newcomers and players seeking a particular play pattern. Avoid treating a social-media poll or early request volume as a forecast of sales; the available evidence supports demand as one input, not a predictive formula.
Step 3: Prototype the identity
Before polishing references, outline the character’s core loop, signature mechanic and opponent-facing cues. A strong prototype should communicate the fantasy in neutral play, not only in a trailer or story scene.

Step 4: Run accessibility and counterplay checks
Ask a new player to identify the basic objective, then ask an experienced player to find reliable answers. Investigate losses at both levels: confusion may require clearer presentation, while a dominant strategy may require mechanical changes.
Best Value
Step 5: Audit the production burden
Count the bespoke animations, interactions, effects, voice requirements and tutorial explanations. Confirm that the team can playtest the complete fighter rather than balancing a partial moveset close to launch.
Step 6: Stress-test the release context
Place the candidate beside the planned season. Check whether the sequence offers variety in complexity, fiction and tactical role. A good character can still be the wrong next character if the surrounding lineup already covers its strengths.
Returning versus brand-new characters
Players often ask about the ratio of returning characters to brand-new ones. There is no evidence here for a universal ideal ratio, and the question is better treated as a trade-off.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Returning fighters provide continuity, recognizable rivalries and a known starting point for balance discussions. They can also be redesigned to express a genuinely different system. New fighters expand the game’s expressive range and can attract people who do not already have a favorite. They also carry greater design and teaching risk because players have no established expectations.
The useful decision is whether each addition earns its slot. A returning character should bring a meaningful update or preserve an irreplaceable role; a new character should offer a clear reason to learn something unfamiliar. Counting names alone cannot answer that.
What does not make a character a good pick by itself
- Popularity alone: It shows interest, not roster fit, feasibility or balance quality.
- Novelty alone: A bizarre concept is not valuable if its gameplay is repetitive or unreadable.
- Early tournament strength: Strong results can reflect unfamiliarity or an unsettled patch, and they do not measure accessibility or identity.
- Technical complexity: Difficult execution is not the same as meaningful depth.
- A faithful reference list: Many callbacks cannot compensate for weak neutral play, unclear counterplay or poor animation.
The decision in one sentence
Choose the candidate that adds a clearly differentiated way to play, gives a specific audience a reason to care, expresses its identity through understandable mechanics, remains fair across skill levels and can be shipped with the testing and polish the game requires. That standard leaves room for requested veterans, original newcomers and surprising guests without pretending that any single signal guarantees success.
