Luxury positioning comes from a credible combination of well-made products, distinctive design and meaning, prices customers see as justified, differentiated access, and an experience that makes customers feel recognized. Quality and craftsmanship are expected; they rarely explain on their own why one label feels more desirable than another.
What makes a fashion brand feel luxurious?
Luxury is a perception supported by a brand’s choices and the customer’s experience of them. A high price may signal positioning, and limited distribution may shape how a product is encountered, but neither proves that the offer is valuable or distinctive. The pieces need to reinforce one another: product, price, identity, access, and service should make sense as parts of the same promise.

That promise is also market-dependent. McKinsey’s June 29, 2026 report, The State of Luxury: What US and Chinese clients reveal about the sector’s future, draws on a survey of more than 2,000 luxury clients in the United States and China, as well as interviews. Its findings should not be treated as universal rules for every country or customer.

| Dimension | What it contributes | What it cannot prove by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Quality and craftsmanship | Confidence that materials, construction, and finish support the product promise. | That the design is distinctive, the price is justified, or the brand has meaning to a particular customer. |
| Price and perceived value | A visible positioning signal, judged against the product and the experience around it. | That a product is better or more desirable merely because it costs more. |
| Brand positioning and story | A clear identity that gives customers a reason to choose the label beyond practical function. | That a story alone can compensate for a weak product or inconsistent experience. |
| Distribution and access | A way to shape where and how customers discover, buy, or interact with a brand. | That scarcity or difficulty of purchase creates lasting desire on its own. |
| Customer experience | Service, recognition, and emotional connection that can make the relationship feel personal. | That one service model suits every customer or market. |
Why quality and craftsmanship are the starting point, not the whole case
Good materials and execution help a product meet its promise, but they do not automatically make a brand stand out. McKinsey’s 2026 US-China findings describe quality and craftsmanship as the “price of entry” in both markets: expected foundations rather than sufficient differentiators. The practical question is therefore twofold: does the product meet a credible standard, and what else gives customers a reason to want this particular label?
#1 Best Overall
Distinctive design and brand meaning help answer the second question. The Business of Fashion’s January 19, 2026 coverage of State of Fashion 2026 reported that 51 percent of global customers identified quality and 47 percent identified brand story as drivers of high-end brand perception. These are reported survey findings, not a guarantee that every customer weighs those attributes the same way.
When does a luxury price feel justified?
Price can help signal where a brand wants to sit, but it has to remain credible beside the product and the customer relationship. McKinsey and The Business of Fashion reported in their January 13, 2025 State of Luxury: How to navigate a slowdown that price increases accounted for more than 80 percent of luxury-industry growth from 2019 to 2023. The report also described pressure on aspirational buyers and challenges for brands that did not adapt. That figure describes the source’s account of industry growth during that period; it does not show that price increases alone create enduring desirability.
Rank #2
For a customer judging value, the useful comparison is not price in isolation. It is whether the product, design, identity, service, and access provide a coherent reason for the price. When prices rise without corresponding product or creative improvements, the brand risks making its promise harder to believe.

Not necessarily. Distribution and availability can shape a luxury experience, but engineered scarcity is not the only form of exclusivity and may not persuade customers to buy at full price. McKinsey’s June 2026 report describes different preferences in its two surveyed markets: US consumers value early access and membership-like benefits, while Chinese consumers place greater value on bespoke service and trusted-adviser relationships. Its findings point to recognition, access, and experiences as possible forms of exclusivity—not a single formula that every label should copy.

Access also extends beyond buying new. Bain & Company and Altagamma’s Spring 2026 update says roughly half of luxury shoppers consult the secondhand market before purchasing new. That makes resale part of some customers’ consideration process, but it does not establish that a specific resale channel is right for every brand.
Why experience and emotional connection matter
A luxury relationship can be shaped by more than the object: service, cultural relevance, and the feeling of being understood can contribute to desirability. In McKinsey’s June 2026 findings, emotional connection ranks among the top desirability drivers in both the United States and China, ahead of traditional markers such as craftsmanship, heritage, and exclusivity. The same report describes US consumers as more receptive to challenger brands, while Chinese consumers put more weight on trust, recognition, brand authority, and high-touch service. These contrasts are specific to the markets studied.

What the market figures do—and do not—say
Bain & Company and Altagamma’s Spring 2026 update estimates worldwide luxury spending at €1,443 billion in 2025. Within that total, personal luxury goods spending was €358 billion, down 2 percent at current exchange rates and up 1 percent at constant exchange rates versus 2024. Bain’s base case forecast personal luxury goods growth of 2 to 4 percent in 2026, to €365–€373 billion; that is a forecast, not a realized result.

The same update says luxury experiences are outpacing tangible goods and that resale and AI are increasingly present in shopping journeys. Those shifts offer context for changing customer behavior, not a checklist that every fashion brand must follow. Bain senior partner Bruno Lannes described the moment this way: “The luxury market is stabilizing, but this is not a return to the old rhythm, it is the emergence of a new one,” in the Spring 2026 update. The report also characterizes the changing relationship as one defined by meaning, not just product.
A practical way to assess a luxury brand
To judge whether a fashion label’s luxury positioning is convincing, consider the dimensions together rather than treating any one as decisive:
- Product: Is quality and craftsmanship consistent with the brand’s promise?
- Value: Does the price feel supported by the product and the wider experience, rather than functioning only as a signal?
- Identity: Can customers identify what is distinctive about the design and story?
- Access: Does the way customers discover and engage with the brand create meaningful access or recognition, rather than relying only on restriction?
- Relationship: Does service or cultural relevance give customers a reason to feel connected to the label?
The strongest luxury positioning is coherent across those tests. A brand can use a different mix of channels, heritage, service, or design than its competitors; the question is whether its choices support a credible, distinctive promise for the customers and markets it serves.
